Most Unique Atmosphere
by mshalhoup
I've been coming here for a few years nows. Virtually everything on the menu is good and each individual dining area has its own personal theme. You definitely know you're in the W. Village when you walk into Bobo's, which was once an brownstone, but the food and ambiance make up for the slightly cramped upstairs seating.
- Pros: Great Menu
- Cons: A little cramped
Wonderful night out
by tonybrown9
We had a great night out here the other night. We had to wait a few minutes for out reservation so we were shown to the bar by the lovely host. The drinks were fantastic - get the Stealth margarita - it was really good! Then we were shown upstairs to our table and feasted on their canape section, followed by salads and finishing with the "signature duck dish" that the waitress recommended. Apparently the chef was just nominated for a Rising Star Award (the waitress proudly informed us) and you could definitely see why. the menu was balanced throughout and includes a number of dishes with local organic produce. We had a super time and cannot wait to go back.
- Pros: food and drinks
- Cons: party atmosphere
Who are they trying to kid?

This restaurant would be maybe worth 3 stars (out of 5) if every item on the menu was $5 cheaper. The salads were priced at $12 and $13 and were nothing special. The tomato salad consisted of one SMALL beefsteak (not even heirloom) tomato and was covered with rather woody stems of an unidentifiable herb. The soup was a tastless matzo ball soup and likewise was way too expensive. The entrees were barely adequate--the scallops were overcooked, the pork chop was cooked to medium but still had the consistency of shoe leather, the pork schnitzel was melt in your mouth tender, but the only flavor coming across was that of the grease it had been fried in. The $8 "market sides" of seasonal vegetables were delicious, but one needed a microscope to see them--barely 4 bites each. Likewise the desserts, priced at $12 each were an insult. They were better than average, but again, barely 4 bites, and at $3 a bite, they needed to be extraordinary--and they weren't. Service was good--they kept filling our water glasses every five seconds--which considering they charge $1 per person for TAP water (ok so it was "purified" big deal) they had better. Our waiter, however, knew details about the food, but kept having to ask everyone to repeat what they were ordering. Yes, the ambience is nice, but none of it was even remotely worth the outrageous prices. Save your money and go to any of the hundreds of other restaurants in the city that are just as good if not much better for less than half the cost.
- Pros: ok atmosphere
- Cons: most everything else.
Chicken and Artichokes with Chef Patrick Connolly
by ToadllyFoodz
I've just finished reading reviews for Bobo and plan on making reservations soon!
Watching Chef Patrick Connolly make chicken and artichokes with herbs solidified my choice, so if you'd like an inside as to how things are made, check out Behind the Burner's video page.
Enjoy and happy eating!
Can't Wait to Go Back

My wife and I have been eager to try this place ever since the new chef started. It exceeded our expectations and we will definitely be back again soon. In addition to a great wine list that my wife enjoyed - the appetizers were so enticing that we barely had room left for our entrees. We had the potato-and-bone-marrow dauphines, the tempura-fried cornichons, along with the spare ribs. All of them were excellent and my wife had to talk me out of ordering another fried cornichons (fried small pickles) to save room for my burger, which I had heard was one of the best burger's in the city. In my opinion, it is the best burger - and I found it to be a fantastic symphony of flavors - that after one bite you will say, "wow - that is a great burger". The mix of the gruyere cheese, fried leeks are piled on top, along with the great seasoning made this meal one to remember - surpassing expectations. My wife's striped bass was flavorful and just as memorable and when combined atmosphere, provide a romantic yet chic vibe. We can't wait to go back!
- Pros: Great Food!!
A West Village townhouse plays a glam boho host to European-style dinner parties.

In Short
If the nearby Waverly Inn affects the snoot of a tweedy Anglo, Bobo is its relaxed, Continental counterpart. The upper tier of this unmarked brownstone could pass for the dining room of a Parisian apartment, with melting candles and crystal waterfall chandeliers. Creaky wood floors and burnished antique mirrors soothe the few bohemian holdouts who remember when absinthe flowed instead of appletinis. After two chef changes, the place has settled in with a thoroughbred, former James Beard Award winner Patrick Connelly, formerly of Radius in Boston. Connelly's refined, thoughtful brand of cooking (striped bass with almond spaetzle and haricot verts, a Niman Ranch pork chop with caramelized fennel and figs) gives the place a menu worthy of the room.
Hits: Two bars disperse the drinking scene so that it doesn't overwhelm the restaurant.
Misses: The smug atmosphere can be a little thick at times.
Hip and fun, but not too over the top....
by NYNY1995
I love this place for pre-dinner drinks with friends. Everyone I take there loves it too. I finally had dinner there and honestly it wasn't bad at all, but a little disappointing when compared to its "peers". Some of the reviews are correct in that for the place, its portion size was a little surprising to the almost "Ducasse-like" price, but the taste was delicious and the complimentary amuse was a nice touch. Yes, the menu is little more sophisticated than the neighborhood standards. The staff was nice and unaffected, but hip and the bartender is a sweetie. For some zoning reason the upstairs "coolest little bar downtown" was closed temporarily, but the downstairs bar is nice. Try not to sit in front of the air duct (across from the little white standing bar table) b/c the AC blew in my friend's face and he was not that happy about it. With myy decade of experience with Manhattan restaurants -it's worth going especially if like going to Freeman's, Gemma, Norwood, Little Owl...
- Pros: Best little bar, chic date place, excellent for meeting up for drinks
- Cons: Small portions if you expect more for the price
Bohemian Indeed!
by nycjuilet
Bobo is a sanctuary for artists and artists at heart looking for unbelievable food in an extraordinary setting. It is precisely the kind of place I have been looking for in NYC- vinyl albums playing in the background, a uniquely beautiful interior flare, a creative (yet not intimidating) menu, eclectic wine selections and great service. The staff was knowledgeable and eager to make our experience there a flawless one. I highly recommend this restaurant to New Yorkers that enjoy the art of dining - Bobo is truly a rare find.
new favorite restaurant

I went to Bobo with my boyfriend last night after hearing rave reviews from my friends and reading mixed reviews online. We had such a great experience. I had been warned that there is no sign outside so we walked down the little staircase into the restaurant. We were struck by how cozy the space felt. The hostesses were sweet and led us to our table upstairs. It was raining so we couldn't sit outside which was a bummer because the terrace looked like it must be beautiful on a drier night. Our waitress was really charming and made some very good suggestions in terms of wine. Each dish we ordered was unique and delicious and in just right portions. The food was delicious and the ambiance was perfect, but what impressed us both the most was the way we were treated from the minute we walked in the door. We are certain to become Bobo regulars.
Bobo a NO NO!
by natefriedman
Horrible service and bad food for an exorbitant price. Rude and inattentive wait staff. Food arrived inedible-- it wasn't cooked properly and the waitress refused to correct it. Go only if you want to be insulted and have a bad time.
- Pros: close to other places to eat
- Cons: the staff, the food, their attitude
