Fun drinks and food in a cute and trendy atmosphere

by Bridgetann at Citysearch

My friend and I decided to give Matilda a try based on a recommendation.

We had the absolute best time! Our waiter was so funny and entertaining I started crying I was laughing so hard! The table next to us was celebrating an anniversary and chef made a cake and shared it with the whole restaurant.

We were also presently surprised it was ladies night and we got to drink for free. That's right ladies get half off mixed drinks and unlimited free wine every Tuesday. Yes, ladies all you can drink for free!

The menu is an interesting Mexican Italian fusion and both our meals were very good.

If you are looking to put your worries behind you and enjoy yourself in a great atmosphere I definitely recommend checking out Matildas! It is so cute!

  • Pros: Waitstaff, atmosphere, Waitstaff drinks, and yeah food

Best place to eat, drink and hang out!

by Bucaiolicelepaste at Citysearch

I don't know what this Susan is talking about! She is completely out of her mind!!! Every time i go to Matilda i have a great experience. Service exist and it is the best service i ever had in restaurants, casual, fun and professional at the same time. About the food, i always have fresh ingredients, i like everything on the menu, their special drinks and sangria are amazing. Nobody at 7.30 p.m.? Maybe because this place get crowded after 8.30...I don't think they will be out of business soon, actually since sometimes it's even hard to get a table, i think they will last for a long time! Miss " Susan in the box", i think your problem was another, maybe a bad hair day? Or should i say a bad breath day?? You better go back to your box!

  • Pros: Great Prosejitos, tacos and great deal for Brunch!
  • Cons: None

Whatever this place may once have been, the end is near. Completely empty at 7:30 PM -- and now I know why. Service as non-existent, even though we were the only people in the place. A pitcher of Sangria arrived at our table so frozen, it was not drinkable. The food in several of the dishes we were served had clearly gone bad... a pervasive garbage-like odor wafted off the calmari. Salads were missing half of their listed ingredients. Two in our party got sick after the meal, possibly from one of the vegetarian dishes. The restaurant is now cash only. I think they will be out of business by the time you read this. If not, use extreme caution when contemplating an evening at this place.

  • Pros: Absolutely empty so no problems getting seated
  • Cons: Everything else

Inventive food and a great atmosphere

by grigagyal at Citysearch

I recently went to Matilda with a group of 5 friends. The chef offered to create a unique "tasting" for us and brought course after course of amazing food based on our preferences. I loved the nopalos and fish sausages. The chocolate jalapeno gelato at the end put us over the top. Everyone loved the inventive food and the great atmosphere. We sat and ate in a relaxed and festive spirit for hours. Matilda is now my favorite restaurant in New York for a special night out.

Dining Perfection

by MM8729 at Citysearch

I have been here a couple times and I feel like I am coming home every time. The owners are kind, outgoing, and very attentive. The tacos alla fiorentina are like nothing else I've ever tasted, I can't get enough of the guacamole and the tropical pico de gallo, and every time I try something new I'm happy! The husband and wife are each fluent in English and each other's languages and their daughter is adorable. Don't be afraid to ask for changes in your meal (if you like it less spicy or more spicy), they are more than willing to accommodate. Everything is fresh and light, you'll be well-fed but never feel too full. They really know food. Thank you, Matilda!

  • Pros: atmosphere, cheery decor, amazing food, more-than-reasonable prices
  • Cons: none!

Great Find

by DinerFromTO at Citysearch

I choose this restaurant by googling and then reading reviews for ones that appealed to me. I have to say that my boyfriend and I were very pleased with the choice. The food was very creative and interesting. I especially liked the nachos...they are not like any anyone has ever had because the ingredients (like corn and a drizzle of truffle oil) are so unusual, but they worked like crazy. Took the advice of other reviewers and had their signature cocktail, the Prosecito (mojito made with Prosecco - sparkling wine). This was so light and refreshing that I will definitely be copying it for my summer beverage by the pool!!! The whole fish my boyfriend ordered was so fresh, moist and flavourful. The filet mignon tacos needed a bit of zing but were still quite palatable. Service was very friendly and definitely not obtrusive. I met the owner and she was very lovely. All in all, a wonderful find that I will definitely go back to.

  • Pros: Food, cocktails, and a knockout bathroom
  • Cons: Long wait for drinks

Rustic Italian cuisine cross-pollinates with fiery Mexican flavors at this modern East Village boite.

by Joshua M Bernstein at Citysearch

The Scene
In this sleek Alphabet City eatery named after the chefs' daughter, cacti and candles top the white tables, while a dated pop soundtrack (hello, Lenny Kravitz) is kept low to enable couples' conversations. Additional eye candy comes in the form of a colorful chandelier and walls adorned with Spanish and Italian words.

The Food
Husband-and-wife duo Maristella Innocenti and Esteban Molina meld Tuscan and Mexican cookery to intriguing, yet middling results. The fritto misto is a mound of lightly fried chayote, poblanos and oceanic delights, served aside piquant chipotle and pineapple-jalapeno dips, while the nachos tartufati take this football snack to transcendent heights with huitlacoche and black-truffle olive oil. Entrees mostly disappoint, like the herb-heavy filet mignon and the fishy roasted salmon lacking the promised tequila and fennel flavors. Salvation, though, arrives with superb desserts like house-made organic gelati and sorbetti and, if available, still-warm churros drizzled with savory chocolate.

Hits: Entree-size appetizers are the menu's all-stars.

Misses: The cooks can go hog wild with spices, overpowering otherwise succulent cuts of meat.
