The early reviews appear to have been written about a week after this restaurant opened. Give them a break. I was there in April and couldn't disagree with the poor reviews more. the food was delicious, moderately priced and the service was extremely friendly. Our greeting was warm and we loved the sounds of soul being played through most of our evening. The restaurant is a bit loud when it gets busy. Don't miss the bar in the back.
Pros: great food moderately priced beautiful room
Cons: bit loud

The grilled lobster was memorable. I definitely would go back for the service and food. the wine selection was also top notch

Smith's is utterly charming and free from pretense. The staff was ingratiating and warm, and overall, my experience there was positive. We started our meal with two appetizers: the steamed egg with polenta, and the asparagus with crab. The egg was light, but more complex than I expected it to be; and the asparagus was so fresh and delicious that the crab seemed almost to be a delicious afterthought. For our main courses, my husband had the scallops, which were so fresh and pleasantly briny that we swore we could taste the sea. The accompanying sauce was thick enough to have substance, but wasn't overpowering. To contrast, though, I was underwhelmed by the lamb. The presentation was unimpressive, and the flavor was pretty bland. The atmosphere was indeed cozy, but almost too cozy. We sat in one of the small tables for two pictured on the right, above, and found that the foot traffic of this busy restaurant put other patrons nearly in my lap as they got out of the way of the wait staff (though the waiters had a good system of letting each other by, it didn't work with patrons). Smith's also has a noise problem - the mirrored ceilings are pretty, but sacrifice noise reduction, making conversation a bit difficult. All told, I would absolutely return to Smith's and do recommend it. We felt very taken care of, and the food was on the whole expertly prepared.
Pros: Excellent food
Cons: Noisy

What a treat to eat at Smith's. The staff is pleasant, The reservationist relayed a message my date was late because of a "dog crisis" and watched over me until she came about 15 mins late. We decided on two appetizers and two seasonal starters and we would see after that. We ate brussel sprouts with smoked almonds - so good we fought over every leaf; non-seared foie gras with a citrus sauce, almost like a fresh marmalade and it was a wonderful contrast, loved the way it "cut" the foie gras. We had smoked squid from somewhere on the east coast, served with some delicious ingredients I could not identify and some pasta with a puree of sunchoke. Each was more delicious than its predecessor. By now we could not eat an entree $26-35.00, and next time I will forego the little dishes and eat an entree. We then shared warm appliecake with ginger icecream and a slight trace of caramel sauce. Service was attentive and not snotty, noise level made talking easy. It was a delightful experience all round because the food was just sooo good. We had a 6.15 table. You need to book ahead for a later one. Crowd was downtown, not very dressed up for a Friday night.

wow -- i gotta tell you, i'm so surprised by the range of reviews for this restaurant! we had a fabulous meal -- the food couldn't have been better, the service couldn't have been more attentive, the entire experience could only have been improved on in one (small) way, which was that i thought the music was playing a bit too loud...but that hardly calls for the scathing reviews these other folks have written! we found the lobster dish to be as good as it gets -- and the cod just about the same. salads to start -- perfection. waitress? couldn't have been more helpful. i've, in fact, just made another reservation to go back. i couldn't recommend this place more highly. and i have NEVER written a restaurant review before.
Pros: great food, marvelous service
Cons: only the music was louder -- and more aggressive -- than i thought was appropriate to the restaurant.

Walked in on a cold rainy night and were sat immediately. The menu was interesting, with many local or house-made inredients, but I found it strange that they were often repeated on the small list of dishes. Our waitress was a little scornful with our somewhat small order and limited drinking. However the food we ordered was plenty filling! I tried the mushroom pasta with walnut sauce, and though it came in a small dish, it was very rich. The cauliflower gratin was just ok, also very rich. The steamed egg appetizer we shared was a big miss. Or should I say mess- with the egg, soft polenta and foam it was nearly impossible to eat with either a spoon or fork! The wine list had no budget wines. The food also took quite while to come out, glad we weren't in a hurry! We discovered the bar after our meal, and ended up staying for a drink. It is a cute space with a nice drink list and friendly bartender. It's hidden location at the back made me think it an ideal spot for some clandestine affair! Overall, I found the place just ok, a little too pretentious, Probably wouldn't go back.
Pros: cute hidden bar
Cons: snotty waitress, pricey

I had to sign up as a reviewer for the first time when I saw the poor review this restaurant previously received. My experience couldn't have been more different! We received excellent and friendly service starting with the host, continuing with the bartender, and finally from our server. Everything we had was delicious, and we especially loved the appetizers we tried, which included the polenta dish and and the sardines. I also really enjoyed the Smith's cocktail. All 3 of us who had dinner that night are definitely returning.

This is the best restaurant anywhere in the village. Great atmosphere, fab vibe, and delicious food. Try the brussel sprouts and the foie gras to start and then do not miss the pork chop (yum). Service was OK, bar scene tiny and PACKED! Lot's of fun. Other than that, plan way ahead, because word is out and it is impossible to get a reservation already.
Pros: Many of the dishes are inspired, unusual and delicious
Cons: Can get pricey if you drink a lot

I don't get the review about this being a great date place. I'm not even sure if we were at the same restaurant. If you read that review carefully, it sounds like it was done by the restaurant's PR company. Overall, the food was just ok. I'd give more detail, but it just wasn't all that memorable. I also have to agree with the review below that the service was terrible. My date and I had one of the worst waiters that we've ever experienced. We would of complained to management, but alas, they were no where to be found. The setting is nice enough, but I wasn't impressed. It always amazes me when new restaurants think that they can offer average food and provide bad service and think that people will want to return or won't tell their friends. Overall, this was an extremely disappointing evening.
Pros: If one can't say anthing nice....
Cons: Below average food and even worse service

I recently had the distinct misfortune of dining at Smith. The worst part of the entire experience was the service. The servers and bus staff were totally incompetent. For example, it took over an hour between the appetizer and the main course, and when the main course finally arrived, it was the wrong order. It was as if no one knew what they were doing. When management was made aware of the situation, they did absolutely nothing, which I found very surprising. Ultimately, I was there for the food, which sadly enough was beyond disappointing. The appetizers and main courses were forgettable. If you like dry cod and grizzle on your steak, you'll love this place! My guest and I discussed our issues with surrounding tables, and we all agreed that the whole experience left something to be desired. It is amazing that the same people who brought us the Harrison and the Red Cat could fail so miserably. Based on my unfortunate experience here, I would recommend avoiding this restaurant at all costs. With all the wonderful establishments in this amazing city, spend your time and money elsewhere.
Pros: Nothing Worth Mentioning
Cons: Incompetent Service, Disappointing Food, Poor Management
