Fabulous Latin Fare
by Athena Chang , Citysearch Contributor
Rioja Week brought me to Yerba Buena, $35 dinner that includes appetizer, entree and a glass of wine.
I heard a lot of good things about this Latin restaurant and I was eager to try it. I got the arepas with pork belly, shrimp in some red sauce and a glass of wine that comes with my dinner. My boyfriend ordered the tilapia salsa and Lechon (suckling pig)
I think my favorite is definitely the arepas. It comes with two mini ones. The pork belly is just so tender it feel like it is melting in my mouth. It is well stewed as well. I think the tilapia is just too little food despite the refreshing flavor and tender fish. The entree I got comes with like 6 jumbo shrimp cooked in some really yummy red sauce. I thought it wasn't enough food but it turned out to be just right.
My boyfriend's braised beef short rib is also super tender and flavorful. Another great thing about this place is our lovely waiter gave us more than 1 glass! It is more like 3!!!
Finally, we ended our dinner with the warm Mexican Chocolate cake with mint ice cream. Honestly I couldn't taste much of the "Mexican" in the cake but it is great - warm, chocolaty, minty and rich.
- Pros: Friendly service, amazing food and great cocktail selections
- Cons: tiny space
Yerba Buena es Muy Buena!
by a Tooch , Citysearch Contributor
Enjoyed a very delicious birthday dinner here on a snowy weekend night. Despite the weather, the place was still packed. Good thing we made a reservation, highly recommended.
Yerba Buena is an awesome, upscale but unpretentious, delicious Latin restaurant tucked away in the E. Village. In fact, this place is so unsuspecting we could barely find the entrance on the street. Naturally, we started with some homemade guac which was topped with queso blanco. Tasty! The four of us ordered different entrees, each better than the next. I, being the basic one, tried the arroz con pollo. It was melt-in-your-mouth good.
The real highlight though was the plaintain side dish. They were lightly fried, not overdone and served with some amazing sauce concoction that tasted like caramel and chili powder. A sauce so good that us slobs even began dipping our steak and chicken in it! I'm still looking for a recipe for this sauce so if you find it before I do, send it over.
A great spot for a nice dinner out, and well worth the trek we sustained through the arctic tundra conditions to get there.
- Pros: unique drinks, delicious menu
- Cons: a bit pricey, smallish space
Great food and staff

Been hearing about this place for awhile and came on a Saturday night for dinner with friends. We had to wait awhile for a table since we didn't have a reservation but we chatted up the fun bartender and learned all about their drink selection. Food was great - we shared a ton of apps, which was the way to go. Most entrees were around $30 which seemed too much to me. The staff hung out with us, we even shared champagne and danced at the end of the night! Good times had by all.
- Pros: Fun vibe, tasty food, good service
- Cons: Overpriced entrees
Hidden Gem, great dining room, service and flavors!
by NYCFOODIE1975
This is a perfect mid-week place AND it’s on Open Table. The restaurant is modest on the outside but inside is a warm lively room run by a charming and hospitable owner and manager!!
Every dish was delicious. The fish tacos were full of fresh flavors!! Our table’s favorites were the panco-coated hearts of palm and empanadas. The paella was very unique yet delicious. Share several of the small dishes, you will not be disappointed!
AND If you are hosting a group dinner or bachelorette take a look at the great hidden room downstairs! It’s adorable!! I will definitely host a party down there.
- Pros: Hidden Gem
- Cons: You must try the fried treats so have a light lunch!!
NYC STAPLE

The food, service and drinks are simply top-notch. Girlfriend and I started with the Calamari and Ceviche Mixto. Both were extremely tasty and fresh. We then moved on to the suckling pig and braised short ribs. The suckling pig was moist and extremely flavorful (most pork entrees in the city tend to err on the bland-side, but not this dish). The short ribs were fall off the bone-tender with a not-overly sweet marinade. On top of the flavorful fare, the manager was constantly (yet not incessantly) checking up on us to make sure we were taken care of (as he was doing w/the rest of the restaurant). Looking forward to returning and while the menu is diverse, would have a difficult time not ordering the exact same thing given the exceptional quality of our meal. It doesn't get much better than this.
- Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere, Drinks
- Cons: Acoustics make it slightly loud
Excellent food, drinks and service
by emb914
Yerba buena is one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in the city. The food is EXCELLENT. I would recommend ordering several of the appetizers vs. an entree so that you get a taste of everything they have to offer. For 2 people we usually order 6 appetizers as they are small portions. The drinks are dangerously delicious and the atmosphere is fun and lively. The service is ALWAYS excellent and accomodating. Enjoy!
- Pros: Drinks and Appetizers
- Cons: None

The last time I was there, I was with the husband’s family. It’s always beneficial to go with a large party, because then you can order more dishes and share them all. We definitely took advantage of this, and perhaps went a little overboard.
- Pros: location
- Cons: pricey
