Delightful Surprise!

by bb623

We live in the hood and wandered into this restaurant randomly one afternoon and were really pleasantly surprised by the experience.

We ordered the french toast stuffed with banana (served with an incredible peanut butter mousse and topped with tiny bacon bits) and the chicken and waffles (waffle was herb and cheddar). This food was absolutely delicious!

We also had a sangria each (one apricot and one cherry). These were wonderful, as well (and strong!), but I would recommend the apricot over the cherry.

The server was extremely friendly and chill, as well. This was a fantastic brunch experience and we will definitely return to try their seafood, as that is what they specialize in!

GO!

by ELIST

This place is adorable. I liked the staff, the food, and the ambiance. If you want a great beer and feel like munching on some oysters, and a great lobster roll - definifely try this place out. Why wait at Pearl - when this place is just as adorable and more reasonable...Sangria was delicious and I loved the homely feel. Will return

  • Pros: Cute, Delicious Seafood, Fun
  • Cons: A tiny bit pricey

be privy to the changes!

by ericscott

Opposed to what the bio says, butcher bay does serve a lobster roll! Also, there is a completely new menu, service program, general manager and chef.

Deliciousness!

by JPWS

LOVED this place! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and good tunes. Excellent raw bar selection and the best fried clams I've had in the city. If you like your seafood fried, this is the place to go. The fried chicken and lobster looked phenomenal as well. I'll definitely be going back.

New East Village favorite!!

by livvy5000

We absolutely loved it!! It is so refreshing to eat dinner in an East Village restaurant that is not overpriced--in fact, very reasonably priced---- has friendly service, a fun vibe, and great food!! Some favorites: the fried chicken, the eggplant parmesan and the mussels. Seriously, blown away by the eggplant. My boyfriend was very surprised that our waitress knew exactly where our oysters came from in Maryland (he's from there). Also good beer choices. We'll be back!

  • Pros: Good prices, great food, friendly waitress

Disappointment

by bluedaisy

Check out the menu before you go. Choices are extremely limited and most of it is fried. I love fried food more than anyone, but this stuff made my stomach turn. The grease wasn't even allowed to drip off the food before serving. The seafood on display on ice didn't look too fresh either.

Huge disappointment. One of the worst meals I've had in years.

  • Pros: PBR
  • Cons: lousy food, clueless server

A Chesapeake Bay-inspired seafood shanty washes ashore in the East Village.

by Josh Ozersky

The focus at this small East Village seafood restaurant is on the kind of casual East Coast roadstand cookery also essayed by Mary's Fish Camp, Pearl Oyster Bar and other wildly popular places around town. Here, though, the menu is more consciously downscale: steamers, fried clams, lobster boils, and the like. The space is heavily wooded and cozy, but can get cramped when the locals all roll in at once, which happens frequently. As a restaurant, Butcher Bay knows what it wants to be, and both the room and the menu reflect it.

Good Food but SERVICE???

by WingMich

I thought this place was ok but partially due to the fact that we only got one piece of bread and that the food wasn't as good as I would have liked. The environment was nice. The wait staff didn't come to our table often, and when wait staff did it took so long to bring our order/fulfill our request. I'll keep this short and simple. The grilled ssparagus was definitely a recommend. While the food tastes good the service definitely took out from the overall rating.

Total 3.5 stars (I still think we should have the option of rating with half stars)

Sleepy and deserted

by seminario

Empty it is on most nights, and for good reason. This place is overpriced and the wines are limited and uninspired. The servers are bored to tears and don't want to be working there. It is also a little pretentious. You have to earn your meal it seems by squinting to read the menu on the blackboard (full of spelling mistakes by the way) and constantly try to get someone's attention when you would like to order something else. There are so many other great spots in the East Village. Don't waste your time on this one.
