I read about this salon on the web site naturalycurly and it was everything I expected. Alot of the stylist have curls so that is always a good sighn. It was one of the best cuts I ever had and the price was good. Very happy.
- Pros: experienced
- Cons: parking is tough
What an experience !!!

After a couple of times walking by Hair cult salon, I needed a change and decided to walk in, and give it a shot. I had the Best experience ever, starting with the front desk person, followed by the hairstylist that he recommended, very professional not only did my hair come out Amazing but I felt so relax with the great complementary scalp massage and a very friendly staff all around. All my friends already know about my great experience and Can't wait to go back.
- Pros: best service in town
The Worst Hair Cut I Can Remember
by CassadyN at Citysearch
Bill gave me the worst hair cut I can remember. This was my 3rd haircut with Bill, and he was familiar with my hair type (thick wavy/frizzy), and my style (I like long layers), However, this time, he clearly wasn't paying attention, and I ended up with a top layer of VERY SHORT hair, which did not blend at ALL with the rest of my hair which had no layers at ALL The end result was an extremely bulky looking, completely unstylable mess. I've had to resort to pulling it back in a ponytail, and using bobbypins to keep the short pieces from hanging in my face while it grows out.
- Pros: Usually On Time
- Cons: Very Poor Stylist
A Nice Place To Visist
by lipson at Citysearch
I've been going to Hair Cult for about 14 years (I can remember when I started, it was soon after I got married). For the last 7 years, I've been "commuting" from the suburbs for my cuts; even worth the parking nightmares.
It's a great atmosphere, everyone there always treats me like family (the family you like) and Laurie consistently gives me a better cut than anyone
else has. The massage to start is cool, too, I just wish I didn't have to go next door to Marma to make it last an hour.
I've always found people have a tough time with my hair, so I've had problems finding a person I like to cut it on a regular basis. My only worry now is if I get a new job out of the metro area - I'll have to hope Laurie's ready to open a second shop elsewhere.
- Pros: Great cut, nice people, and a sxy owner :-)
Recessionista Thursday
by oldworldlove at Citysearch
I hadn't had my hair done since last November because I lost my job. Coincidentally the receptionist just cold called me to say they hadnt seen me in awhile, after explaining why i hadn't he mentioned about the Recessionista Thursday deal they had going on. Every thursday 12 - 4pm you can get any service for 30% off. I ran!!! I am so loving my hair today! I went from 9 months grownout highlights to a more natural color brown with some highlights, and an amazing cut! It had only been my second time to the salon, and it was as awesome an experience as the first time. Thanks Laurie!!!
- Pros: location, staff, service
Jenny is the best with curly hair!
by hope3333333 at Citysearch
I started going to Hair Cult when I moved to Hoboken and now I won't go anywhere else for cuts and foils. Jenny's really sweet and always goes beyond my expectations (in a good way!) My cut and color always grow out well. I have curly hair- and the layers always look good! Hard to find a good stylist for curly hair- Jenny's awesome and consistent!!! I've been happy after every appt!
- Pros: always get compliments on color/cut
Was expecting a lot more for the money I paid.

I have been living in Hoboken for three years have tried many salons in town. My previous stylists have all left all of the other salons I have gone to regularly, so on a friend's recommendation I decided to try this place and I was disappointed.
I was on time for my appointment (and had another appointment booked elsewhere after so I was kind of in a rush), but when I got there, my stylist just started on someone who had already been waiting. So I waited 45 minutes before they even washed my hair. I told him what I wanted, which I thought was simple: a trim, shape up, and long whispy bangs (long enough to pin back or tuck behind my ear). Somehow I got layers, barely any hair was actually cut, and short whispy bangs that I cannot pin up of tuck behind my ear (which isn't even and doesn't look cute). Plus, while he was cutting my hair, he stopped numerous times to check on another client and make several other appointments. He blew-out my hair out for a few minutes (I have a lot of wavy hair that takes time to blow-out straight), and told me I was done. My hair was still damp and frizzy cause the blowout and style I paid $60 for wasn't complete. I had to go home and blow-out my own hair and honestly, besides my weird bangs, couldn't tell I had gotten a haircut.
He was in such a rush, in fact, that he had to ask me twice if he had already put product in my hair because he forgot. And when I told him I preferred no product besides an anti-frizz/shine before a blow-out because my hair gets really oily with excess product, he still put extra pomade in after my hair was "dry" which, of course, made my hair super greasy. And I felt as though I was being rushed out of there so he could get to his next appointment. I understand if you are running behind schedule, but I paid for my haircut too and expect to get what I pay for.
He was, however, really nice and the salon is priced the same as most salons in town, but I didn't get the attention I should have and was pretty much like "that's it?" when he told me I was done. When you pay that much for a haircut and style, you shouldn't have to go home to style your hair yourself. I will be trying another salon in Hoboken and I recommend that you do the same.
- Pros: Close to my home, reasonably priced, nice stylist
- Cons: Long wait, mediocre haircut, felt rushed
Did a bad job on my wedding day!!
by ter425 at Citysearch
Stylist showed up almost an hour late for my updo appointment on my wedding day. Owner was in the shop and never once came over and offered to replace the very late stylist. In fact, she never, ever acknowledged me even at the end when I complained. Turns out the stylist was so rushed to get my hair done that they actually had the makeup artist doing my make-up at the same time!! Then when I got back my wedding pictures, I noticed there was a curl sticking up out of my updo. Crappy job and worse customer service if that's even possible.
- Pros: none
- Cons: owner,staff,unreliable
Do not go to anyone for highlights-- esp. Bill
by beyourself at Citysearch
If you are looking for natural style highlights DO NOT go to BIll. I even brought in pictures and had been going to another stylist there whom had given me natural looking highlights. They have of your process on record so I thought anyone could do what she did, but no he took it a shade lighter and now i am stuck with hair with major blonde streaks in it-- it looks horrible!
Familiarity Breeds Contempt
by margaret1919 at Citysearch
So, here?s a Hair Cult review in the form of a cautionary tale. You might choose Hair Cult because it?s conveniently located in your neighborhood and you like the bohemian style of the decor. Initially, it seems like a good choice: your first visit to the salon is a very positive experience. You enjoy the complimentary cup of Aveda herbal tea and the relaxing head massage, and your haircut is great. As time passes and you become a regular client, however, you realize that the tea is not always offered, the massages have become briefer and more perfunctory, and the quality of your haircut varies. Furthermore, you?ve noticed that the staff seem prone to mood swings, and they often pay more attention to each other than to their own clients. After one particularly aggravating appointment, which leaves you with a badly layered cut and the feeling that you were being talked about behind your back, you start wondering whether you should look for another salon. In the end, the decision is made for you. You learn that your stylist has left and moved across the country without giving you any warning. Not to mention that you?re going to be married in a few months, so now you really *do* need to find a new stylist for your all-important wedding-day hair. Fortunately, there are plenty of other salons in Hoboken and in NYC. Maybe you should have looked elsewhere first.
- Pros: Location, products
- Cons: Attitude, lighting
