Best Bi Bim Bap ever

by Galfromdownunder

I landed in NYC midnight and was whisked off to eat my favorite bi bim bap and soo yook ever since a customer recommended it to me 3 years ago. Open 24 hours, it's Korea transplanted to 'merica without genericization. I'm not Korean, I don't know why the two reviewers before me this year suffered a bad experience - have only ever experienced fast, courteous service and utterly authentic food. (Perhaps they were just having a bad day - try working in a restaurant sometime, I know of what I speak!) I think of it as akin to 'chicken foot soup' Chinese restaurants - meaning, not for those who seek mainstream westernized Korean food - if you want your tongue, tripe and cow cartilage fix, its all here, with lashings of free extras like a pile of kimchee and a strange green pickle on a bed of raw napa. Authentic!

  • Pros: Authentic food, open 24/7
  • Cons: Non really, unless you're a really picky prat

ONLY SERVES KOREANS

by dinnerforks

this restaurant is discriminatory against anyone who is not korean!!

i have had similar experiences at this restaurant. they will not serve you if you are not korean. and if you are korean and go here, you are only supporting the cause.

EXTREMELY aggravating experience here. In addition, i've had hard plastic pieces in my soup, which ended the rest of my meal/dinner. went home hungry both times i ate here!!

  • Pros: opens your eyes to bigotry
  • Cons: going through the experience

Horrible service, Bad food

by grubstreetnyc

The first time we came here our order was not taken for a good 30 minutes. After the order was taken, food did not show for another 45 minutes. The second time we came, it was the same. When questioned about this, the server will, as expected, act as if they don't speak a word of english and will give you that dumb lost look like they have no idea what you are saying and can't tell that you're upset. The food is extremely mediocre, and priced too high for mediocre.

This experience easily makes this the worst restaurant in K-town to go to.

  • Pros: none
  • Cons: poor service, mediocre food

Sul Long Tang, an oxtail soup, headlines the limited menu offered at this 24-hour Koreatown restaurant.

Very Good Korean Food, but very specific

by gracesur

I always come here when I get homesick for some good old korean food. The signature dish, the soup with rice, noodles and beef, is very good but for those unfamiliar with Korean food or those with more conservative taste, I would recommend trying the Bibimbap or the soo-yook which is thinly sliced beef with a spring onion salad that is supposed to be eaten with it. The soon-dae platter is also authentic and yummy.

  • Pros: Inexpensive and Reliable
  • Cons: None

Great gom-tang

by hazygrey

Like many Koreans abroad, I can't seem to find in NY the replacement for those cheap, tasteful dishes that are available everywhere in Seoul. Often, the Korean food here will taste good, but just an infinitesimal bit different.

But Gammiok's gom tang is the real thing - it tastes genuine and it's very good.

Best Sul-lung tang in NYC

by sf_ratings

Gam Mee Ok is famous even in Korea. It is hands-down, the best sul-lung tang in the city. A perfect dish for a cold day or a late night, complemented by the best daikon kimchee. It is a perfect meal, all around.

Great Korean, Great Prices

by airwave

We went here solely on the Citysearch recommends and it turned out to be a great call. Wait staff was very attentive. The waiter steered me towards the Bi Bim Bop because he thought I might not like the Korean Kielbasa, then he showed me how to mix and eat it correctly. Kim Chi was great. Ox-Tail soup too. Potato pancakes delicious. Wife loved her seafood (Bay top shell?) salad. All portions were very big. Best of all - the price was delightful. Next time I'll be more brave and try other dishes.

Even Koreans from Korea visit here

by williburg

As a Korean, this place is one of a few places I go out for Korean food, especially with when friends and family are visiting from out of town. They even told me this place is one of the attractions Korean tourist go to when they are in NYC. Kim chi, by far other than my monther's, is the best of USA, which is the only side dish you get from here, unlike from other Korean restuarants. They don't full around here with quantities, but concentrate on quantity. Their specialty is Sul Lung tang, but try Soon dae, which is korean sausage.

It's always crowded there, but especially during dinner hours, 6 pm - 10 pm, and after club hours, 12 - 5 am. Expect to wait at least 20 min.

  • Pros: Kim Chi, Kim Chi, Kim Chi
  • Cons: sometimes long wait

GREAT BARGAIN

by bargainlover

Gam Mee Ok is a great 24hr place to go after you've been clubbing and need to wind down with some food. Definitely Order their specialty sulong-tang (ox-tail soup; you add your own salt and scallions). Their kimchi is one of the best I've tasted. The bean-dae-duk (Korean pancake made up of ground beans) is also very tasty. And the great thing is that the food is pretty cheap. There's no real side dishes but it's definitely worth a try!

  • Pros: Good prices, Good food
  • Cons: crowded weekend nite
