small classes. knowledgeable teachers.

I took class with both Kim and Jenny and they are both friendly, helpful and approachable. The pilates reformer classes are small, no more than six, so you get a lot of hands on instruction. I have practiced pilates at many studios throughout manhattan and this is one of my favorites. I will absolutely go back.

I've seen a lot of good reviews for Amy's classes.....what about KIM!? I've been to the Monday class but I believe she normally teaches on Saturday too. I've taken her class several times now and she's a great instructor. Guides students through class and is very friendly. Classes are nice and small and i've enjoyed the people in them as well.
I would go way more often if I could!!

Fun Pilates studio! Amy is an excellent instructor, very knowledgeable and can work with many different levels at the same time. I've taken both her mat and equipment classes, both very good!
Great Experiene

I found this place through lifebooker, and got a great deal on some classes. I had taken many mat classes before but never a tower/reformer class. Amy was extremely helpful and patient when teaching me how to properly perform each exercise (while still being in a group class). Overall a wonderful experience, highly recommended!
Organized, focused, detailed

This is my first experience with a pilates studio so I don't have much to which to compare. That said, so far the experience has been solid and I'd highly recommend this place for a beginner and/or someone who has to do the group classes because of expense level but also wants a personalized feeling.
Pros: small group class sizes, very knowledgeable teachers who seem to love teaching so you feel like you're working the right muscles in the right way instead of just working muscles, well timed evening classes, easy scheduling via web, intimate studio feeling, conveniently located to many subways.
Cons: a ton of different teachers (almost no teacher teaches a group class more than 1x a week) so as a beginner who can't afford individual sessions it makes learning more challenging because they all teach quite differently. In addition, while most of my instructors have been fabulous (highly recommend Amy although I'm sure I'll have more recommendations to come) I did have one that didn't seem to match the others, generally older clientele (in the beginner levels at least).
Great Pilates by "Real" Instructors
by Judnich at Citysearch
I've been exploring a variety of Pilates and Yoga Studios and Movements Afoot is outstanding. It offer a variety of different mat classes -- both in length and approach. Most importantly the instructors are "real" -- not Barbie Dolls! Watching them go through the moves is inspiring and encourages those of us who are not perfectly shaped to feel comfortable and welcome. I highly recommend Movements Afoot!

I have been frequenting Movements Afoot for over 10 years. I am thrilled that the quality of teaching and training exceeds my expectations regularly. The atmosphere is focused, serene, colorful as well as maintaining a lovely sense of humor. A safe, sound, recuperative, exploratory environment to heal injuries and grow/develop in many Pilates, Yoga, Dance techniques and modalities... THANK YOU for being Afoot so I can RUN, WALK, everything in between and all around!
The Best Place

I have had some back issues. Movements Afoot has made such a big difference for me in my own wellness. The teaching here is amazing, demanding and at the same time, fun.
Being a movement teacher, I just can't go to any place. I look for intelligent teaching, cutting edge knowledge about the body and most importantly, " Makes my body feel great!" Movements Afoot is the place for me.
- Pros: Helps Me
- Cons: None
