Decent, but expensive
by Natedog67
I've been to a lot of sandwich places lately, and this one was quite good. I got a Ruben sandwich, and was pretty thick and hearty for what I ordered. The only issue I have is I still feel the prices are a slight be inflated for the food. It's still a good Deli, but don't walk in there with $5. Haha
Quality Control is Gone
by Chubby Restaurant Goer
I still give it 3 stars because they do still make one of the best pastrami sandwiches in NYC, but here is a place that has become too popular for its own good that management no longer cares. I do say management because the staff are still hard-working as ever but the quality of the meat has gone down tremendously and that is the manager's responsibility.
There used to be a time when I would easily give this place 5 stars or the highest rating because every time I go there, they serve the best and freshest meats. It don't matter if it's corned beef, franks, or turkey, they are all good. Now, only the pastrami is good and all the rest is crap. I got food poisoning a few times from their not-so-fresh corned beef.
If you're a tourist, everyone will tell you to come here. But I must warn you if you order anything else other than the pastrami sandwich.
Best pastrami ever

I loved the pastrami in this place.
You do have to wait on line for a while but its worth the wait.
THICK sliced vs THIN sliced...
by PhillipLisa
Bottom line with this review (forget about how many stars we gave it); you either LOVE THINLY sliced GARGANTUAN sandwiches (pastrami and corn beef ESPECIALLY) as are made at the rival - Carnegie Deli OR you like THICKER and more manageable sandwiches from Katz's. We personally prefer Carnegie Deli, but this is also a top notch quality New York deli of that type genre. It is "expensive" when you compare the size of the sandwich from both places as a Carnegie Deli sandwich can feed 4 people or more and make 4 lunches/dinners. We have only eaten here once because of our preference. MANY of who are coming in as tourist from outside of New York City are just coming because they FINALLY saw the movie that had a scene filmed there in 1989 - "When Harry Met Sally".

If you like to be abused, go to Katz
by Jprendes
Overpriced, bad service, average food, filthy place. When you search in Google for "bad customer service" a picture of this place should come up
Best Pastrami Sandwich

A must visit for anyone coming to NYC. The Pastrami on Rye is my favorite.
Katz' Big sandwiches
by chelsearainbow
"This is probably the best known NYC deli , and if it is not the best deli, it is close, and probably serves the best pastrami, although 2nd Avenue Deli (which closed for awhile, and is now located on E 33rd in the Murray Hill section of Manhattan) is right there.
"will recommended Katz's Deli for or salami. It is good, but it can be a bank buster if you go in blind so I recommend checking out their menu on their website. Yonah Schimmel's for a knish ($3.50-$5)
"Went to the world famous Katz Deli which was so crowded it took 10 minutes to find a table. Next you have to put up with the abuse of the guys behind the counter and the place is dirty. They brag about how big their sandwiches are and how you can't finish.
"Katz's Delicatessen This cavernous cafeteria is a repository of New York history—glossies of celebs spanning the past century crowd the walls, and the classic Jewish deli offerings are nonpareil. Start with a crisp-skinned, all-beef hot dog for just $3.10.
“ not the food, not the location, not the tons of pictures on the wall, not even Harry and Sally who make that place that special. It is all of it together. Id loved been here and Ill come back."
Overhyped and Overpriced
by JoeMoralli
After seeing this on Man vs. Food, I wanted to try it.
I had a pastrami rueben for 17.05. Plus tip, soda and sales tax for $25.50. C'mon man! It was an average sized sandwich and was not the best sandwich I ever had either.
I am not an expert on pastrami, so I have nothing to compare it to.
Overrated but still good pastrami
by darkharmony
Very expensive, always crowded, the staff is actually pretty nice. The pastrami and corned beef are absolutely delicious tho I will give them that. Other than those two sandwiches not much to say about the place. P.S. Unless you are coming to visit in NY or entertaining an out of state guess I suggest you take your order to go rather than have to be subjected to all the busyness that goes on there.
More About Reputation?
by CinderC
It’s a landmark and a well-known place for tourists to go to and even some locals. So of course when friends visit from elsewhere they want to go here. Who wouldn’t? Mile high sandwiches loaded with more meat than your body can even handle. But is it really as good as it’s reputation? Hmmm… It’s fine for the whole show and historic aspect of it, but if you were more concerned with taste and your wallet, I’d find somewhere else. I don’t eat pastrami or corn beef, so you might say I’m not playing fair to whether this place has taste. What I have tried are some of the sides and other foods there, which are delicious. I do like their fries, knishes and latkes. I am interested in trying more too. They are definitely less money than a sandwich. However, every person I’ve brought here who’s eaten those sandwiches all say the same thing, loaded with meat, a little dry, not super delicious. Then you have my fellow native New Yorker friends who rarely step foot in this place with so many more choices within the area. Should you go? Absolutely, it’s been around forever and it has a great reputation. I know I will end up back here and I’ll try something else each time. Just don’t lose your ticket to pay!
