Good old rainbow -- especially when it's drizzly, go and get a lavash or a shawarma with eggplant. They'll put on extra for you. Ignore the horrible cuban restaurant next door, and you can dine for $4 -- eat your food in Union Square and watch all the tourists at Mikey Ds and the poor wannabee hipsters at Republic and laugh.

... it's all about their amazing CHICKEN SHAWARMA sandwich. Absolutely, without question THEEEEEE best sandwich in the city!! And their falafels ain't bad either! The pitas are soft, the sauces compliment the ingredients, the owners are wonderfully nice and remember you and your order. I've been coming here for years and I take ALL out of town guests here to pick up a sandwich to eat in the park. I hope they stay around forever. Try the chicken - they told me it's marinated for THREE DAYS. Oh, my mouth is watering thinking about it - and I haven't even had breakfast yet!!!

Pros: chicken shawrma sand., the price, the ingredients

Cons: long lines at lunch

While the food at Rainbow Falafel is good, it is not amazing, and it is by no means the best falafel in New York City. You can get a better falafel for $2.00 elsewhere, so I wonder why one would pay $3.00 to eat here. For Union Square residents, the place is very convenient, and that is certainly an advantage worth considering. The people who work there are nice too, and some of the other items are quite good too. This place is good enough that there isn't much of a need to travel elsewhere if you live within a few blocks, but there are better places to go, and some less expensive ones too.

Pros: Food, Reasonable, Friendly

Cons: , Cheaper places

This hole-in-the-wall with no seating and ever-present line out the door has the BEST falafels I have ever had the good fortune to place in my mouth. Rainbow's perfect blend of spices takes fried chickpea balls to an entirely new level. Other menu items, including desserts, are very yummy, too. It is unbelievable to me that Rainbow Falafel has not made it onto the BEST CHEAP EATS list. Do y'all have something against garbanzos?

Pros: Inexpensive, Very fast service, So tasty

Cons: No heat/cold shelter, Always a line

The falafel is excellent - great spices, fried just right. The best falafel I've ever had. Hummus is good too, but skip the babaganoush. Standing in line at Rainbow is one of the ultimate New York things to do. It may look like the Soup Nazi, but everyone inside is very nice.

Editor's Review

No-frills, low-priced falafel shop offers vegetarian sandwiches, hummus, shawarma, baba ghanoush, meat pies, homemade soup. Baklava, kanafeh for dessert.  See the full editorial review.
