Have you had their croissants?!?!?!

by karenkarenbobaren

Apparently Moishe doesn't make croissants very often, but when we went in there a few years ago he had some in the window. We were expecting a buttery regular croissant, but it wasn't like that at all. It was warm, and it looked like a croissant, but it tasted like a danish. It was the best thing I have ever eaten in my freaking life.

We visit the city a few times a year and always come to Moishe's, but never again did he have them. We did ask about it and he told us that the next time we come, to please call the day before and he might be able to whip up a batch.

I love that this is a hole in the wall and as far as NYC bakeries go, this is the best kind. Nothing flashy, just a hole in the wall and I think it makes everything taste better! Like buying baked goods from someone's kitchen rather than a store.

My sister had some trouble ordering mondel brot; the ladies up front got it wrong twice and they were kind of perturbed since they cut it for her and then couldn't use it (apparently). I think they were giving her marble for chocolate or vice versa; it was REALLY confusing. But like with so many places that are melting pots, I totally give them a pass even though my sister was about to flip her lid.

Anyhow, if you ever see croissants BUY ONE.

I'd be clinically obese if I lived in NYC.

  • Pros: EVERYTHING!
  • Cons: Sometimes the staff doesn't understand what you want.

One of the last Great Kosher Bakeries left in Manhattan

by boyfromqueens

Must haves: kickles, babkas, marble sponge cake, seven layer cake, and freshly baked cheese and prune danish. Although I live on the UWS I try to swing by at least once a month. Throw the seeded rye in the freezer; throw right in the toaster and apply butter in emergency.

  • Pros: kickle, babkas, and marble sponge.

Best strudel after best facial !

by maursey

Ohhhh,.........but have you had their apple strudel,..... or the cheese strudel. To die for! After I have the best NYC facial at Monique's on 9th Street, I always treat myself to a piece of strudel. And I let no one speak to me while I savor it without any distraction. Mmmmmm

  • Pros: fabulous baked goods
  • Cons: no chairs and tables

I will do *anything* for a chocolate bell from Moishe's.

by sean_keogh

I have two words for you: Chocolate Bells. These little rippled towers of decadence look like a chocolate stalagmite, but don't let their looks fool you. This is a cupcake turned upside-down with a mountain of chocolate mousse on top (formerly the bottom), and then the whole thing is covered in fudgey chocolate ganache. You can't find them every day because they sell out as soon as they are put in the window. Get there in the late morning when these are fresh, and you won't be disappointed. They are even better than they sound, and the best part -- they're $2 each. You don't know heaven until you know a Moishe's

Chocolate Bell.

Everything here is good. Their hammentashen, their bread, their bobka, it's all exquisite. This place is known as a jewish bakery. I'm not jewish, and I don't keep kosher, but this is the best bakery in the world. Ignore all of those trendy fadish places like Magnolia and Cupcake Cafe. This place is the real deal!!!!

  • Pros: Exquisite dessert, divine pastries, wholesome breads, prices that can't be beat.
  • Cons: none.

irresponsible with orders

by kerenny1

sorry about the low rating, but I've tried the baked goods. they are terrific, but the problems lies in that this bakery can't be counted on for orders, even simple ones. I was left out in the cold with no bread for a party, and the owner was not very nice. His help was embarrassed because he forgot my order 2 days in a row. I was patient and tried to reorder after the first miss, but when he forgot the 2nd day, I was really annoyed. If you are buying what is in the store, it's ok, but if you need a special order for a party or holiday, I wouldn't trust Moishe.

  • Pros: great baked goods,
  • Cons:  lousy service for orders, they don't come thru. Messed up my order 2 times

I love all the desserts at this Moishe's bakery. Amazing cookies, babka and hamentashen. Also try freash baked bagels and breads (great pumpernickel).

One of the truly old-school Jewish bakeries left in the city.

by Contributor

In Short
While many Jewish bakeries in Manhattan have, sadly, moved out to the boroughs or closed shop altogether, Moishe's -- an East Village institution -- is still going strong.
There's challah, of course, and such Jewish staples as rugelach, mandelbrot, and babka. The rye bread, pumpernickel, and hard-to-find corn rye are coveted favorites.
