The Scene
Since relocating from its East Village location in 1999, this tiny (but oh-so-well art-directed) L.E.S. retailer and record distributor has been at the epicenter of NY's drum 'n' bass scene. Owners DJ DB, DJ Dara, Paul Morris and Sean "Shooter" have kept BBS on the cutting-edge of the global electronic music scene by serving up new breakbeat trends, such as two-step garage, Dark Roller, Electrostep and Hardjazz, to D'n'B techheadz and casual shoppers alike.
The Goods
While the well-stocked selection mostly focuses on drum 'n' bass vinyl and CDs, the best stuff in the store is the amazing array of affordable 12 inches and remix projects released through BBS's own labels: Breakbeat Science and Orgone Recordings. After you've gotten your groove on, make sure to pick up an armload of the slammin' BBS logo T-shirts and sweatshirts. They might just be the coolest things you'll buy all year.
customer service is dead

forget about getting any help from these snobs. if it isn't on their own label, they could give a toss. nothing new is in stock unless its a major vinyl release. try to ask them if/when a record is coming out and they are waaay inconvenienced. guys, you might be the main d&b shop in town but there are way too many superb online shops who actually have what your clients are really looking for (without the attitude) to run your biz like that.
hit and miss

While unquestionably the city's premiere drum&bass shop, the help and selection can vary. Staff can range from incredibly cool, helpful, enthusiastic (recommendations, etc) while others front with knowitall DJ 'tude if you so much as forget what label a release is on (and God help you if you buy something on CD). As for new releases, they really do get it all, but stuff can also disappear quickly, with staff and regulars snatching up fresh UK 12"s before they ever make it out onto the racks for you punters. Stuff is also pricey but you can check it all out on one of the store's half-dozen turntables before dropping your hard-earned cash and then go home safe in the knowledge that you've almost certainly scored the tune before anybody else in town.
- Pros: selection, atmosphere
- Cons: selection, attitude

DJ's Dara, dB, and others bring you a great collection of the best in drum 'n bass, breaks, jungle, dub, etc... vinyl selections at this New York staple! Always friendly and helpful staff of working DJs know whats hot and new, and are not stuck on themselves like at other shops in Manhattan. I highly recommend this shop!
