New York's record store of the moment, packed with electronica, exotica and globe-spanning curios.
by Contributor
The Scene
Other Music lives up to its name by stocking nearly everything Tower's behemoth NY flagship across the street doesn't. It's a small room stuffed full of obscure gems, where you'll hear anything from the latest hot electronica to '70s free jazz. Occasionally, the record and disc racks are pushed aside and the main floor is transformed into an impromptu stage for DJs, tunesmiths and indie-rockers such as Rainer Maria, Japanese neo-hippies Ghost, DJ Shadow, the Tindersticks, Gary Wilson and Neil Halstead.
The Goods
Eighty percent CDs, 20 percent vinyl LPs and 12-inch singles. All the extant Sun Ra CDs. All the latest electronica and cutting-edge indie hip-hop. A whole shelf of musique concrete and another of indie rock. Plus choice dub, world music and a few thousand other subcategories. The prices may be higher here than at other comparable stores, but the staffmembers try to make up for it with expert recommendations and descriptions.

shaping the taste of NYC

If you're truly interested in new music, this is the shop that's been shaping the tastes of downtown new yorkers. Many a New yorker watches for an email reviewing the new additions to the shelves just inside the door.
cozy store with eclectic selection

It's no Amoeba or Aquarius (AMAZING L.A. and S.F. record shops) but it's really the only place in NY where I buy CDs. This small shop is usually packed whenever I go, and I spend hours looking through the selection of new and used CDs. Obscure records can be found here, as well as informative reviews to aid in your decision making. The selection isn't as extensive as I'd like, but it's decent. The clerks aren't exactly chilly, but I can't say they're as helpful as others I've encountered at Amoeba or Aquarius...
- Pros: good selection
- Cons: a bit small

you might not have to special order, this place has some eccentric stuff, not all of it but hey, its the size of my living room.
- Pros: good selection, great hard to find, good vinyl
- Cons: more space, more stuff
nice electronic selection

It's not a very large store, but I went there mainly to find electronic music I think I'd otherwise have to buy online. I happened to find about everything I wanted and other things I didn't even know I wanted. The prices seem reasonable to me; it beats paying s+h and I'd imagine any major retail store would be more expensive. Like other people have said, there is a feeling of pretentiousness with the work staff (then again more stores seem to be that way), but then all you really need them to do is ring up your purchase.
Indie Music Lover's Dream

This tiny store has a nice collection of indie rock, experimental, dance, and jazz CDs and even 7" records for those truly obsessed music collectors. The staff sometimes seems a bit aloof, but if you need a recommendation they are very knowledgable about all those songs you won't hear on local commercial radio.
