Decent food friendly staff

by Snation

Best part is proximity to east village theatre directly across the street. Sushi is nothing to write home about but is servicable. basically on par with any other reasonably fresh sushi in NY. Have to say the miso soup wss particularly good. Staf is extremely friendly which makes it feel like a nice neighborhood spot.

Good neighborhood Japanese restaurant

by Athena Chang , Citysearch Contributor

Another neighborhood sushi restaurant that I have never visited since I moved here but finally paid my visit tonight.

I was skeptical because it was right on 2nd Ave. and I suspected it to be a tourist trap. However, after tonight's dinner I was actually surprised. I got the sushi combo, which has 7 pieces of sushi and 1 roll of my choice. The sashimi is not the best quality I have had but it is pretty big and decent. The spicy tuna roll I got is spicy and roll is made well.

My friend got their udon soup and it comes in a big pot. It has a lot of ingredients inside and it is very savory too.

The total bill came down to about $36 after tax. Not too bad for dinner for two.

  • Pros: Good selection of Japanese food, Fresh sushi

best place ever except for this ridiculous looking customer that was at the sushi bar

by kda77

Shima is so my regular spot!!! So when i say this it has nothing to do with the restaurant

at all... I love the food, the people (staff) and location...

There's this frizzy haired older woman that sits by the sushi bar occasionally by herself if you see

her.... sit somewhere else.

She is grouchy and swears shes like best friends with the owners she obnoxious!! She should really

order delivery and do us all a favor..

I figured out the days she's not there, and thats when i go, then it's perfectvno frizzy hair.... just sushi!!!

  • Pros: Fresh fish
  • Cons: frizzy lady on the loose

Amazing food

by nutbut303

We went to Shima before a movie as a last resort but it turned out to be such a great experience we're making it our "usual"!!! The grilled chilean sea bass was grilled perfectly, totally delicious and the portion was more than generous. The chirashi in any restaurant is a good measure of a good japanese place, the sushi is scattered and often times the "chef's choice". If the chef is choosing good, presentable fish in this entree then you know they got it right. We ordered three other appetizers; a chicken dipped in rice cracker and deep fried with green tea dipping salt (amazing), kinpira gobo (marinade lotus roots) and a grilled whole squid. I'm looking forward to having another meal at Shima!

  • Pros: Amazing sushi, great service, never a wait because people have no clue what they're missing!
  • Cons: NONE

Every piece of sushi, sashimi, bento, eda mame, this is to say, absolutely everything has been perfect from the first day - over 7 years ago - I started dining at Shima. A real East Village institution, don't miss eating at Shima.

Decent place!

Service was good and the food came promptly. I feel it's a bit pricey for its niche, but will definitely visit this place again.

My Favorite Japanese Restaurant

by miskafied

My first experience with Shima Restaurant was 16 years ago as a college student. The restaurant used to be located on Waverly by NYU. It was the freshest, most affordable Japanese around. My dad had his first Japanese dining experience there and loved it. After college, I went back to Waverly and, much to my chagrin, found it was gone. By chance I found it again about six years ago. I'm so happy to say the food is just as good with a few fusion-inspired flourishes. The location is tightly spaced, but room size be damned, the food and service is so worth it. I highly recommend: Sashimi Salad with Soy Vinegarette, Ring Ring Ring Calamari appetizer and Foie Gras of the Sea appetizer (winter months only). All of their special rolls are worth a try.

  • Pros: Food, Service
  • Cons: Size

Incredible

by moharir

We lived a few blocks from Shima and consider ourselves extremely lucky. We ate here at least 2-3 times per week and I am sure put someone's kid through college. For each of our over 100 meals (easy), the food was always delicious and the waitress extremely friendly. If you are looking for an outstanding meal at a very reasonable price, Shima is the place. I highly recommend the New York, New York platter; it is so good, one does not even need the traditional soy sauce/wasabi mix. If you are having sushi, do not forget to ask for the cilantro sauce accompaniment.

  • Pros: Great food, reasonable price
  • Cons: none
