Bad and Bland Sushi

by vwdj

I went to Choshi for dinner based on a friend's recommendation and I must say, I will never go back there again. My friend ordered the sushi deluxe which came with a tuna roll and I had a spicy tuna roll, salmon jalapeno roll and typhoon roll. The rolls were big but consisted mostly of rice, cucumbers, scallions and a very very tiny piece of sushi. The rolls were BLAND and all taste the same. I couldn't even tell which was tuna, yellowtail or salmon. My friend's sushi were not fresh, and her tuna roll was tasteless as well. We left there unsatisfied as we were looking to have some sushi instead we ended up paying for rice, cucumbers and scallionis. I am sticking with Yama on Irving Place, Tomoe, Mizu and Haru from now on.

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: sushi not fresh

sorry sushi with fish that didn't taste fresh

by zeecee

The rolls all taste alike. They put cucumber in most of them, where it doesn't belong. The salad dressing was bland. The fish felt old and mushy. Sitting outside was pleasant, but the food was truly disappointing.

  • Pros: pleasant sitting outside
  • Cons: sushi is mediocre, mushy; fish doesn't taste fresh; too many cucumbers

Reliable neighborhood sushi

by west50s

Choshi is our go-to neighborhood sushi joint. We order on average once a week from here and it is consistently good. You will not find anything inventive or fancy here, it is nice if you are just looking for the basics. We have also brought friends and out-of-town visitors here... the reviews have always been extremely positive for not only the sushi but also the cooked items. I particularly enjoy the choshi roll, wasabi shumai, tofu salad and spicy scallop roll.

  • Pros: Consistently good sushi and service
  • Cons: Not the place to go if you're looking for inventive sushi

Rude waiters, so rude that you want to curse at every each of them

by H2OAve

No one had brought us any water / tea after sitting down for 20 mins unless we requested. The waiter asked us about our race(why the hell do they need to know?), if we were above 21 (we didn't even plan to get alcohol) and "reminded" us the minium expense per person is $ 10 (sounds like worrying if we didn't even have 10 bucks.) Sushi was not well-wrapped and press hard enough, probablly the sushi maker was not well-trained.

Waiters are RUDE RUDE RUDE!!!

  • Pros: Nice atmosphere, no waiting
  • Cons: Rude waiters

STAY AWAY - FILTHY PLACE & BAD ATTITUDE

by lilz

I've eaten here a couple times and never had a problem with the quality and service until last Friday, when I went for dinner and left hungry. Why? Here's the scoop. I ordered 3 rolls and an entree salad to share with my sister. As we were finishing up the salad, the rolls arrived and just as my chopsticks were going for it, a huge fly landed on it. I asked the waiter if it would be possible for him to replace the 2 rolls that were contaminated. He was quite pleasant and said "OK" and brought it back to the sushi bar, where the sushi chef and mgr gave him a very hard time. The mgr brings back the rolls and asks us "whats the problem". I tell him about the fly, and his response was "Is that my fault?". I said "Yes, you keep the doors open and I've been swatting fruit flies since I sat down." I shouldve prob left when I saw the fruit flies (its only a reflection of how fresh the produce is) but I was hungry. Unfortunately, I was still hungry when I left the place paying for only the salad and 1 roll we ate. I will never go back again!!!!

  • Pros: no wait, fairly cheap
  • Cons: bad service, flying insects

Very good and affordable Japanese cuisine.

by asommelier

It's definitely not one of those uber-trendy or high-end Japanese places. If that is more to your liking then stick with Nobu or the other sushi places in that neighborhood. However, this place is a reliable, unassuming and affordable stand-by in the Union Square/Gramercy area. I've come here often for lunch and sometimes dinner and the food has always been tasty and satisfying. The mostly Japanese wait staff is always friendly and courteous but remember you are not in a five-star establishment. There have been newer Japanese restaurants that have cropped up in that area such as Haru. For instance, while Haru is much trendier, I find myself always coming back to Choshi for the food. It's definitely worth a try.

  • Pros: Friendly wait-staff. Affordable Japanese Cuisine

Over the hill

by babyspinach

One of NYC's many tired Japanese restaurants that have overstayed their welcome. Sushi wasn't too good but the wasabi was strangely inedible.

Best in Union Square/Gramercy

by csiebott

It's the best Sushi in the Gramercy/Union Square area, and I think among the best in Manhattan. Yama gets the lines, but if you want great sushi, to be seated quickly (outside if you're lucky), and a reasonable bill, then Choshi's the place.

A Staple

by apricotdelight

Still my favorite Japanese/sushi place in New York. It may not be "fancy" but I love it. I dream about the dragon rolls (better than Blue Ribbon) and the spicy tuna roll is also very good. It's a neighborhood place that is a great value so don't expect super attentive service or a dreamy ambience. Just go for the food and enjoy.

  • Pros: Great Food, Good Value
