Best Pancakes EVER!

I went to 9th Street Market on Sunday and LOVED LOVED LOVED it! We only had a 15 minute wait and the ?bearded waiter? made sure to come find us outside when our table was ready. He was not only really nice but very attentive and bought us a round of FREE drinks. The Food was outstanding and the other customers were very delightful! Everyone seemed happy with their food...some even gave my friend and I recommendations. I would highly recommend this place and the staff! I will definitely be back! Plus the check was extremely reasonable!

• Pros: Great Food, Great Atmosphere
• Cons: Could be a bit of a wait for a table when busy!

Rude Service, I would stronly discourage anyone to go here!

I woke up early to eat at 9th St. market because I heard good things, however the food was taking a long time to come, my friend politely asked the waiter how long our pancakes would be. Our bearded waiter rudely barked, "10 people ordered pancakes, LEAVE if you want" after being embarassed in public we decided that we would take our business elsewhere. I don't want to support a business who's employee or perhaps the owner is rude to polite innocent customers just trying to enjoy a pancake before work. fyi I've worked as a waitress myself and I've never acted this way(they weren't even busy)!

If you're looking for a good breakfast place, I would suggest Mud (a few doors down on 9th) anyday instead of 9th St. horrible market!! Service is better there :)

Despite of the recent bad reviews, my 2 girlfriends and I decided to try this place for brunch on Sunday. The place is really small (and cozy --loved the fireplace!), what explains the long wait of about 1 hour, even though it was rather early for brunch. The general experience was great, though. Food was delicious. I had the special apple pancake with bananas and walnuts, very tasty and filling, and my friends had omelet and french toast, both praised. Service was also very attentive, our coffee/tea cups being constantly refilled. And the music was really enjoyable (not loud). I'd give 5 stars if not for the long wait.

Hidden Gem!

The southern-influenced menu here brings a feeling of rustic comfort to this tiny restaurant (there are maybe 6 tables in the dining room). I would highly recommend the crab cakes or potato pancakes to start and for the main the chicken fried steak, catfish, or the skate are delicious. Keeping with the southern feel they offer cornbread and butter instead of traditional bread and offer your choice of cobbler for dessert.

The ambience is cozy despite the small space with a fireplace always burning with fresh wood.

• Pros: Cool little place to eat good food at a good price
• Cons: Only serves wine, no beer or drinks

My favorite brunch place!

I am a local around the East Village and I go here for brunch all the time! It is my favorite place. The food is AMAZING ( I highly recommend any of their omlettes) even down to their toast (great bread and homemade jam!) Great fresh squeezed juice. I love the atmosphere. Yes, it is small, but the staff does well with what little space they have. The working fireplace alone makes it so charming! There is always a wait if you don't get there early, but if you head out to get a coffee at MUG down the street and have a book or friends to wait with its not that bad. I highly recommend this place!

• Pros: Great food, cute atmosphere, wonderful and calm owner (I think!)
• Cons: Quite a wait if you don't get there early...but not a problem if you plan ahead

Gone WAY Downhill

Overall, one of the worst meals either of us has had in a long time -- very, very sad.

I have been going to 9th street market since 2001 on a regular basis. I have always loved it -- the intimate environment, the fireplace in the winter, the coziness which is a rarity in nyc -- but most of all the deliciousness of the comfort food.

Its been about six months since I'd last been, and I found myself craving 9th street market. So, I went with one of my friends (who also eats there regularly) for dinner on Saturday night. Unfortunately, we discovered the food has gone way down hill -- it was one of the worst meals i've had in a long, long time. Did the chef change? Did they sell the restaurant? How else could this happen.

I started with the crabcake and had a seafood risotto special for dinner. Before ordering the crab cake, I asked the waiter if it was mainly breading, mayonaisse, or actual crab (I'm skeptical about crab cakes in nyc) - and he assured me it was almost entirely crab meat. When it arrived, it was all mayonaisse. As my friend pointed out, calling it a crab cake was a misnomer - it was really a crab spread. It was disgusting. I didn't eat it. Then, my seafood "risotto" appeared. It was in fact overcooked rice in a soup. Seriously -- it was rice in a liquid - it was NOT risotto by any stretch of the imagination - the person cooking it clearly had no idea what risotto was, or how to make it, or how to serve it. Even worse, there was absolutely no flavor to my dish - it was inedible. My friend got a beat salad and the salmon entree -- the beats tasted canned, and had no flavor, and her salmon was overcooked and also flavorless.

Cozy Elegance.

I highly recommend this place for both brunch AND dinner. Brunch has consistently amazing food with gourmet touches. Definately worth the wait. Dinner is classy and laid-back...the perfect place to bring a date. It's always cozy and comfortable, but when the weather is cold and the fireplace is going...there isn't a place in the world you'd rather be.

It would have gotten NO star at all...

Very rude waiters, attitude galore form start to finish, the music was louder than it would be in most bars and nightclubs...plus it was grungy (good luck).

My partner and I were exhausted from all the screaming over the music , that we decided to eat in "speaking silence"....this place really is like a doodoo in the face.

As mentioned in the previous comment (thank GOD someone speaks out here!), it was very very dark...it felt like night time inside, which was a comment I heard from a couple of people who left the place before we got in.

Our waiter was rather rude and not very helpful, giving attitude to such simple questions such as "do you happen to have cappucino?" ..an icy "no" slapped into my partner's face, while the waiter already rushed off to someone else who was complaining about the music. Charm was completely absent in any of the staff...service got a new definition also. Sloppy.

The food? Oh yeah, the food...hm, we eat brunch every weekend, good ones, mediocre ones, never ever bad ones...bc its hard to screw up brunch food...but the atmosphere in this place was so bad that it would have even put a bitter taste into our mouths if the food was good. But it was only mediocre...so it left a very angry "why the hell did we waste our time here"-after-taste in our mouths.

Go to the bronx-zoo eating cookies, ride an hour in the subway while munching on cheetos, you will have a much better time than in this dump.

AVOID AT ALL COST

This place is definitely NOT worth the wait. Actually, even when there was no wait, it's still not worth it. The two male servers we had were the most rude staff i have ever encountered in my entire dining experience. After about an hour or so of wait (which was a none issue as most places that are supposedly good, have at least 45 min wait), we were greeted by a very obnoxious waiter. I simply commented on how loud the music was, that i couldn't even hear him say the specials, he bluntly said "we like it that way". and then proceeded in saying "do you want to stay?" with a surplus of attitude. and the food was mediocre at best. the ambiance was supposedly romantic??? but it was just way too dark. i guess they wanted the feel of a club for a sunday brunch? there a lot of places to go from brunch in this area, please, if you value your time, dont stand in line. or you'll end up having such a horrible time. oh, and if you still decide to go after reading this review, do yourself a favor and bring your own travel candle, helps to see the mediocre food you're eating.

Best Brunch in Town!

I went here for a Saturday brunch a while ago, and although we had to wait for about an hour to be seated, it was definitely worth every moment. The decor is very lovely; pale walls, a roaring fireplace, flowers, etc. Very cozy and hip. My plate was overflowing with eggs, cheese, potatoes and everyelse accompanying it. I ate every morsel, and the mimosa was a fantastic touch! Our waiter was very nice and helpful, even though he was slammed with tables.

I really just loved this place and have no complaints other than the waiting.

• Cons: waiting to be seated is looooong!
