We went there to grab a bite to eat on Sat afternoon at 4, the place was pretty empty. Decor is average for a mexican place. I ordered the yucca chicken chipotle which was tasty. I liked the vegetable 'flan'. My friend ordered a dish with chicken marinated with some citrus, which turned out to be surprisingly 'mild' if not bland for mexican. The salsa was fresh and tasty they didnt ask if you wanted more water or chips or asked how the food was though. The choice of meats available were beef, chicken, and a few choices of shrimp dishes, the daily special was tilipa grilled or in fish tacos. Not especially noteworthy Mexican place, maybe nightlife will pick up at dark.

  • Pros: Reasonable price, window watching
  • Cons: Service lacking despite empty place, entrance on side street

Since 1986, this Mexican chain has served large portions of homemade classics like fajitas at budget-friendly prices.

HORRIBLE service! The food is pretty bland, and they charge for REFILLS on ICE TEA! Who the hell charges refills for ice tea? HIGHLY UNRECOMMENDED.

Everything is just OK. Service was barely good enough and didn't refill the water or the chips. The guac and margaritas were good, but the main courses had way too much cheese (and I love cheese). In fact, I struggled to find a non-cheese ingredients in some of the entrees. It almost reminded me if your college roommate made an enchilada for you, "Tomatos? Peppers? Dude, all you need is cheese. We don't even have that other stuff in our fridge." I don't know what the other reviewers were talking about but the salsa tasted like it came out of a can. The atmosphere was noisy but all in all a good place to go if you just want to grab some drinks and chips with some friends. If you want good Mexican food, then go elsewhere.

  • Pros: drinks, atmosphere
  • Cons: food just OK, service could be better

I had to sign up just to reply to some unfair reviews. Mary ann's has the best salsa of any NYC mexican restaurant and we have never been unhappy with the Margarita's! If you don't like a lot of cheese, just ask for half cheese. You do not go to Mary Ann's expecting amazing service, but if you want a great, casual , cheap and fun mexican dinner, look no further.

  • Pros: salsa, margaritas, price
  • Cons: average service

With barely so-so food to begin with, you'd think this place would want to make a friend or two. That would be a no, or at least they really, really don't care. This place pulled the sleeziest move I've seen in a restaurant in a long time. And I live in NY. Four of us were there on a Friday night recently and had the nerve, the nerve I tell you, to order coffee with dessert. We were told by the seventeen year old looking waiter that coffee is only served mid-week, not on Fridays or Saturdays. Well, what can I say? The cynic in me had a pretty good idea why the place would have such a dishonest policy. Am I unfair? Let's see. They willingly took our order for their overpriced desserts but wouldn't fire up the Mr. Coffee machine on a Friday Night? Yeah, I wonder why? And this place takes itself seriously.

  • Pros: slightly cute place
  • Cons: extremely loud music; weird, dishonest coffee policy

went on a sunday afternoon for brunch, the shrimp and scallops were bland and tasteless.the enchiladas and tacos were cheesy but not very good. they did not serve bloody marys which was odd, the margarita was watery. a very disappointing expieriance. i dont know why the place is usually packed, even the salsa was tasteless .

  • Pros: inexpensive
  • Cons: bland food, watery margarita

Not the best but reasonably priced and and pretty good selection of margaritas with various grades of tequila available by the pitcher if you like. The food is good, plentiful and loaded with cheese. Specials are usually pretty good. The mole is sadly nothing special, i make a better one at home and I'm about as gringo as you get, but it's a good place to soak up a few margaritas and enjoy a meal with a group of friends. Crowded so be ready to wait a bit for a table, even a 2-top.

  • Pros: margaritas, value, pretty good food
  • Cons: crowded, wait

Mary's has great food and a very fun atmosphere. The service was on the sucky side, but who cares after a margarita or two. There is usually a crowd to get in so expect a wait. If you want to bring a date here the lighting is soft without being overtly romantic. Yum Yum.

If you're simply looking for a huge plate of cheese-drenched Mexican, this is the place to go. For subtle flavors and decent salsa, keep looking. The crowds are huge. Not sure why. That said, it sure beats Benny's. Really friendly, on-the-ball staff.
