We had a party at Gandhi this month. The food was so Delicious, everyone enjoyed the curry, specially Chiken Tikka musallam, fish tikka, Samosa, nan and the mango lassi was soooo goooood. The atmosphere is very good and their service is friendly and excellent. Everybody should try their food. We will be back again and again.

AMAZING!! The best Indian food in NYC. Period.

by Carlos G

I've been coming to Gandhi since i was a kid. It's never been off in the nearly 17 years I've been going there. Romantic, a bargain, great food, well located, great service, and an all around good time. Just go. And bring friends.

  • Pros: The food is five star quality and it's inexpensive
  • Cons: None.

We all ordered different dishes, tikka massala, tikka massalum, poori, naan, and rice dishes.

everything was really delicious. i enjoyed it all!

the owner is very friendly, and so is all of the wait staff. they even sang happy birthday with us!!

My Favorite on the Block

by delala

Good food and good portions. Every dish I have tried is well seasoned, which is in contrast to some of the competition. A favorite of mine are the Bombay Potatoes with raita. Enjoy.

An uninspired meal. Walk on by.

by venya

I've walked by Gandhi several dozen times and finally tried it over the weekend. In short, keep walking.

The 3 appetizers were ordered we bland. The meat samosas were slightly bigger than a Mentos, and left me even hungrier. The chicken soup arrived at my table as a coconut soup. When the chicken soup finally arrived, it was without doubt the saltiest soup I've ever had. You might roll your eyes at use of a superlative, but I am Not a picky eater... it was inedible.

The Chicken Tikka Masala was bland, uninspired and just not good.

On the plus side, the decor was nice enough, Indian music playing softly in the background. The waiters were diligent about refilling water...

East 6th street is lined with Indian restaurants. Keep walking and find yourself a good one.

  • Pros: decor, can accomodate large groups
  • Cons: food, food, food

Typical Run-Of-The-Mill Indian Restaurant

by Burlington Tom

I chose to go to Gandhi last night after reading reviews for several Curry Row restaurants. Hardly anyone else was there, after all, it was a Monday. The decor of the dining room certainly reflects Indian culture, although I would have liked some background music, since it was pretty quiet. I was a little disappointed that we did not get any naan bread once we sat down, as it seems to be usual at other places. After we ordered our meals, they asked if we wanted any, which was brought out with our meals. I ordered the Lamb Briyani, recommended in another review and my fiance ordered Chicken Tikka. Our meals were fantastic. I must recommend the dish as well. The service was relatively attentive, although once we got our meals and the naan bread, there was some confusion when we asked for the three dips that typically go along with the bread. The servers did not understand us, until we pointed to another person's table, where they had the said dips. The waiter probably refilled our waters after every three sips. Altogether, though, I give this restaurant an average rating. Average because the food and price were great, the service and atmosphere were decent, but it's not one of the BEST Indian places I've ever gone to. The enthusiastic manager wished us a good night on the way out, which I thought was nice.

  • Pros: Food, Value
  • Cons: Just an average place to go

Not-so-hidden treasure

by dinardnj

While nearly all of the 6th Street Indian restaurants are located on the south side of the street, Gandhi stands out on the north side with its giant green awning, completely unobstructed by any other competing restaurants next door. The food is above par and I appreciated the little nuances that made Gandhi seem different to me than its run-of-the-mill competitors across the street. Gandhi offers a variety of interesting yogurt drinks, beers, and appetizers, and the interior of the restaurant is alluring, yet cozy, with scarlet and gold walls, lit only by candles and small accent lamps, decorated in beautiful, beaded shades.
