bland and bad service
by LALA
I usually don't write reviews unless I really dislike a restaurant. The service was terrible, waitress took forever to take our orders and the food was garbage! I love vegetarian food but this place is nothing great. It's overpriced and there's no flavor at all.
I RECOMMEND House of Vegetarian on Mott St. Now that's what I call GOOD FOOD!
- Pros: none
- Cons: bland food, over priced, horrible service
Souen is the Shiznit
by meatty4
Please take note--this review based on my experience at the new 6th St. locale, situated b/t 1st Av/2nd Ave. This is the first positive review of a place I've ever written. Souen hits on all cylinders. The organic veggies are so fresh and bursting with flavor. The broth also is savory. The lunch special is tight, featuring a ramen bowl and a side item (might I recommend the Onigiri--a rice ball wrapped in seaweed, but you get to wrap it yourself!) for $10. The servers are enthusiastic about the cuisine and also quite knowledgable. W/o my asking I was provided by my waitress a description of all the liquids and spices on the table. To her credit, the waitress--an avid cartoon buff-- was also willing to indulge my desire to discuss baseball and japanese cinema. The decor is minimalist and creates a serene ambiance. Are there any negatives at all to this place? One might argue that the way the specials are listed on the wall conjures up images of his kindergarten classroom, but for me the thought of kindergarten conjures up solely positive memories. Didn't we get to change clothes with the girls daily? Anyhow, do yourself a favor and visit Souen for light, fresh and healthy and zesty fare, if not for an opportunity to reminisce about changing beside the young ladies in kindergarten.
- Pros: Service, Decor, Broth baby Broth
- Cons: None
Don't ever change!!!!
by verybecca
I've been eating here for over 10 years and it's my favorite restaurant in NYC. Why? Because it's delicious, clean food, and it's moderately priced. Healthy eating doesn't have to be more expensive. There is so much fat/salt/sugar hidden in food at other restaurants, and ever since I started seeing a nutritionist, I've been off sugar and simple carbs, among other things, Souen has been my staple. The zen atmosphere is soothing as well...this place is my comfort zone.
- Pros: Delicious, clean food, inexpensive, reliable, good service
Delicious Chirachi Sushi, and more!
by margoshka
Mmmm, what a great find this place is! You may need to wait for a few minutes for a table (as far as I know they don't take reservations) but you won't care once you get a spot, order a carrot juice with fresh ginger and a the HUGE Chirachi Sushi (plenty big enough for two). Friendly wait-staff (and cute too!), and wholesome fresh food - quite reasonably priced. What more could you ask for?!
- Pros: excellent healthy food, prompt service
- Cons: wait to be seated
just like in japan!!
by datona13
I have been here numerous times and always feel a sense of calm when sitting among the wooden walls and plants of this true to japanese home-cooking restaurant. The food is simple and sumptuous!!! Every dish is pure in flavor and ingredients. It is a true gem!!!! I recommend any of their soup dishes -- the broths are unbelievably tasty!!! And they have kabacha (a japanese pumpkin)!!! The Kanteen dessert is a meal in itself!! GO HERE!!!
- Pros: simple delicious food
Fantastic Macrobiotic Restaurant!!!
by mmdada
I don't know why the price under "restaurant info" has 3 $ signs - they are NOT expensive at all. Lunch @ $7.50 is a steal considering all ingredients they use are organic AND tasty. I love this place for lunch, dinner, and munches in betweens. Their baked goods are also fantastic - my favorite is scones (any kind!) and green tea cookies. :)
A Canivour Confesses: Great food!
by Bridget_Jones
I must confess - This as well as one other RAW Vegan places has me considering going vegetarian. But then again, if you live near a place like this or the other RAW place - it would be very easy to live a delicious vegan lifestyle. I was a bit overwhelmed by the menu - I thought being a vegan, macrobiotic restaurant I'd have limited choices here. NOT SO! This place's menu is like a menu at a diner - pages and pages long. Hard to make a decision. Only option: Come back more often. After all the food is fantastic!
- Pros: Healthy Food, Meatlovers will Love, Nice Decor!
- Cons: Big Menu, TOO MANY CHOICES, Need more locations!
