The delicate sounds and spices of India
by noak11
Calcutta is a real treat. They feature live sitar music while you eat and the food is fantastic. The flavors are complex, but not too spicy. I would prefer spicier food, but for most people, this is a good level of heat. Last night we tried the mixed tandoor, lamb biryani, and kadi ghost . All were excellent. The portions are good for an Indian restaurant and they participate in Restaurant dot com, so we were able to get a $25 discount. The service was excellent, probably due to the small crowd of diners - 3 tables on a Tuesday night. I think the recession will provide a lot of quiet dining experiences, so make sure you take advantage so that these places can stay in business.
- Pros: Great flavors, Live music,
- Cons: You are charged extra for sides like chutney
horrific service and substandard food

The service was atrocious, the lamb chops were cold and had to be sent back, and they forgot several of our dishes. it was NOT a good experience.
- Pros: good live music
- Cons: food, service

The food was delicious. I ordered chicken tika masala, best flavor ever. naan is so fresh and tasty. Waiter was very happy to describe everything on the menu. Perfect menu for vegetarians. Relaxing music. There were so many choices in food. I like that they have private bathrooms!
- Pros: Food, service, music, the environment
- Cons: none
Romantic and Delicious Food
by rachelbff
I stopped in here the other night and had the most delicious dinner. I was served a delicious indian wine that was so flavorful and recommended by the staff. I then had tikka masala ( my fav) and it was the best I have had in so long. I highly recommend this cute romantic music filled restaurant!
- Pros: romantic, inexpensive, beautifully lit, live music, great food
- Cons: none
Best Indian food in the East Village
by msblonde65
Went here with my boyfriend and had a wonderful time!! Excellent food, the best I've had in the village, and wonderful service (including free drinks when they accidently slipped on our bill). Very prompt seating and as a bonus, they have sitar players in the evenings on weekends. Very romantic atmosphere, not crowded, an overall wonderful experience!
- Pros: Everything!
- Cons: Nothing!
Very Dissapointing - Long Wait - Dull Food
by your_reviewer
Because Calcutta charges a little more and looks a little fancier ON THE OUTSIDE than some of the other restaurants on 6th St., we decided to give it a try. The food quality was objectively decent; but what little flavor the dishes had lacked any trace of sophistication even when compared with the very cheapest Indian restaurants. Soup was served lukewarm. The menu and the waiter said there would be curry leaves in the chicken and lamb curries, but none were to be seen in those dishes; more importantly those dishes had some heat but little flavor. We literally waited an hour for our food once we sat down; I cannot recall ever having that bad of an experience in a restaurant. Another first: one of us ordered brown rice because the waiter told us that they had it, they served her white rice, and then the waiter insisted, "In my restaurant this is the brown rice." Tandoori chicken was okay, dahl was poor. Wait staff was unprofessional; water and service was hard to come by, and the place wasn't even particularly crowded. Chutneys were uniquely poor. If you value your time and your food, you will do better anywhere else than Calcutta.
- Pros: Good Naan
- Cons: Poor Service, Unreasonably Long Wait, Dull Food
Most elegant Indian restaurant
by merlen71
For the past 11 years, I have been going to this restaurant. Matter of fact, I got engaged there. I LOVE Indian food. I have been to so many Indian restaurants. From 1 star to 5 star. Cacutta has the best food ever. My favorite dish is "SHRIMP VANDALO" It's a bit spicey, but tasty.
It's very cozy. If you want to impress a first-date, it's the place. You will not regret it. Also, it inexpensive.
- Cons: parking - It take about 5-7 minutes to find parking.
Best Indian Restaurant on Indian Row!
by sexiebunnie
I've tried a good many Indian restaurants in the City, and Calcutta is definitely among the top 5. Excellent food, very clean with nice decor, friendly staff and live sitar players, but best of all is the value for the money. You can stuff your tummy to the fullest for under $20. Now we're talking!
- Pros: Inexpensive, Amazing food, Quick service

Surprise, Surprise
by xxjamiebabiexx
I had never tried indian cuisine before my trip to this restaurant. The food was pretty good! the garlic pita bread was amazing and the indian beer was quite good as well. I went with a couple of friends, and we ended eating and drinking alot and not paying a hefty price. There was nice live music and our waiter was very patient with us as we asked him what he recommended from the menu because we had no idea what to order.
- Pros: decent food, good service, live music
- Cons: seedy location
