I would give this place 4 Stars but.....

by xxii

I would give this place 4 Stars but I am just so annoyed because I tried to order this product and the sales person had told me he would get it for me in a couple of weeks. Well I ran out of this product for my beautiful pooch; I called and the same salesman dismissed me like what I had ordered wasn't important enough (oh and he never ordered it as promised).....

I've been going to this place for as long as 8 years and he dismissed not only me but my dog who desperately needs this product for his heart.

I do recommend going to Whiskers but beware of this rude salesman.... Yes the owners are a bit heavy in their views but they have a lot of stuff that you can't get anywhere else. Good for pets but bad for humans. Beware of this salesman!!!!! Oh and take in the info but do your homework ! sorry about your cat oh and the person who buys from LI please somehow post where I am looking for a new place.

  • Pros: good holistic stuff
  • Cons: bad customer service

Come on folks... you must be kidding

by youmustbekidding

This is not only the best pet store in the city, but most likely the best pet store in the country. To complain about not getting a litter pan when you were leaving town and should already have little pans or having to watch for expiration dates on your own... You must be kidding. We are all grown up and should take responsibility for what we buy. However, to condem a store like Whiskers where so must information, help, and care is given so freely and so compassionately is like trying to bump off the messenger. So many people agree with me when I say so what if we have to put up with a little quirk here and there... the benefits of this place far outway the minor bumps for all our pets sakes. and p.s. you don't have to like the owners - they have suffered, studied, and gone through the gates of hell so you don't have to!

  • Pros: the best information and care
  • Cons: nothing!

Extensively knowledgible and correct!

by NotBuyingIt

This place has been and still is the answer to my cat's health! My cat could not eat, no matter what I gave him he couldn't keep it down. Vet after vet didn't know what the problem was even after different tests, prescriptions and diets. I even turned to pet supply stores for advice-No luck. I lost all hope until I decided I had nothing to lose by trying the advice the owners of Whiskers gave me. The very first time I did what they suggested-it worked! I have never forgotten this. They opened my mind and increased my knowledge. My cat can now eat and digest food and has been since the owners of this store convinced me to try their recommendations. They are not self motivated and even suggested on feeding my cat food I would by for myself at the supermarket if I were a carnivore (anything but Whitefish, that is). Thank you Phil and Joeseph of Wiskers!

  • Pros: Will be openig another store.
  • Cons: Nearest subway 5 blocks away.

the worst thing they could possibly do

by rachelz3

The worst thing they could possibly do is show up with my food order and NO litter boxes, that's what they did. I ordered with Susan last Thursday, making sure they had the disposable wonderboxes in stock. We had a nice long friendly chat about me switching from an automatic cat box back to wonderboxes, and how I was leaving town on Thursday, and how I needed these boxes for the person caring for my cat while I was away. We moved the delivery to Monday because we were discussing them maybe buying my automatic box and they needed the weekend to decide. I spoke to them this morning, to let them know I would sell the automatic box elsewhere. Now it's 4pm on Monday, it's 96 degrees outside and the delivery guy shows up with no litter boxes. I call the store and after putting me on hold for a long time, then disconnecting me, Susan gets on the phone and says she knows I am leaving Thursday so she'll deliver them on Thursday. Like I need to be waiting for a delivery on the day as I am leaving for the airport. Like I can depend on them to come through then when they let me down now. I said no, that wont do. Then Susan starts full-on yelling about how she'll bring them Wednesday "if she has to bring them herself". Like it would matter? I said she should stop yelling at me. She said what else can she do. I said well I can do something, I will get the boxes somewhere else and never order from them again.

Aside from leaving a cat without food and water, what's worse than leaving a cat with no where to go to the bathroom? What's worse than promising cat boxes and showing up nearly a week later at the end of the day without them? I guess maybe yelling at me as well?

Buy elsewhere. These people are nuts.

Careful When Buying Products Here

by ashokan420

The rudest, nastiest owners (husband and wife). Not only that, you have to make sure the supplements and food isn't expired. If it is - you're out of luck because they blame you for not paying attention when you bought the product. There are plenty of other pet supply stores in the area that have the same products - although their supplement section is the most extensive. I live two blocks away but will never step foot in that store again.

Best pet shop in NYC

by bunluver

This is the only pet store that I go to when possible, I am so pleased that I can actually go to a shop and purchase unique safe items that I used to have to mail order.

I have never had a bad experience with the staff; they have been more than helpful.

I even was able to special order an organic product that they did not have in stock.

I get the feeling that they really care about animals in there and support animal causes.

Whiskers is my favorite pet shop!

A good resource for supplies, but do your own thinking

by asantic

There's a good trend these days towards feeding companion animals better. However, good feeding consists of giving animals the most species-appropriate diet. That is where the pet food industry has failed us. Unfortunately, many of the premium brands on the market have been designed to appeal to human sensibilities and leverage human food fads in order to sell product. That's predictable, considering that dogs and cats can't read or shop for themselves. Just know that not every product in this store is better than the average can of Fancy Feast. Also know that applying human ideas of holistic living to pets does not necessarily bring you to the same conclusions as studying the unique dietary needs of dogs and cats. Cats for instance are 100% carnivorous and stay healthy by eating the muscles, bones and organs of their prey. When a premium brand advertises all white-meat chicken, peas and carrots, they have designed the food to appeal to the human buyer, not to honor what's approriate for your cat. There's more and more information online about this subject. Do your own research, come to your own conclusions, then get what you need at Whiskers. They do have a lot of higher quality products all in one place and it's a nice store.

Terrible service, rude staff, messy display, good product

by raxko

Wow.... I use to force myself to have to go to thi store becaue they DO have great products... bu EVERY time, the staff is SO rude and dissmissive... they need to learn that if they are going to work with the public they need a little bit of "people person" quality... I am now getting my product in long Island, I rather drive there at least my experience is pleasant....

Wow! A true gem in the city!

by yourbestfriend

I have to say that this place is packed with wonderful products and people who really know what they are talking about. I can handle someone who is "preachy" if they are truly passionate about what they are talking about and, of course, if they know what they are talking about in the first place. I am so pleased that this place is downtown!

  • Pros: people who know their stuff
  • Cons: none

An Excellent Find

by bloev

I found this store while crossing the street on my way to another location. I stopped in as I was curious what they supplied. I have for the last 6 months been feeding my cat raw food due to illness - he has IBD -and raw is all he can tolerate without getting sick. I was interested in purchasing from a local supplier as I had been ordering online previously and shipping costs are expensive. This store is very well stocked and the staff was very friendly and knowledgable. The costs are reasonable and they even offer free delivery (WOW!)

If I had found this store years ago and been educated sooner, I am sure his illnes would probably have been avoided. This store was a great find

  • Pros: Great selection, Very knowledgable staff
  • Cons: None
