Great deal for those who want a workout and don't need saunas and spa services

by knstudent at Citysearch

I joined when I was taking a class in the city for a month and personally, I loved it. The guys working the front desk were friendly and not intimidatingly muscled or anything. What this gym lacks in "atmosphere" is a plus in my opinion. I don't need an overly-hyped up, perky fitness gym filled with annoying stay at home mothers and snotty trainers giving me attitude because I don't shell out $100 an hour to be shown how to lift weights.

I've always found members here to be respectful and industrious, unlike the aforementioned women who sit around and chat around the equipment. This is a place for the seriously fitness minded. As a college-age girl, I liked that I wasn't given attitude from primarily male weightlifters for entering their "turf". There's enough space that I could always find both cardio and weight machines without a wait. This stuff may not be the newest looking, but honestly it all works just fine. All machines break down on occasion, but there were enough here that I was never majorly inconvenienced.

Included in my membership were fitness classes. I went to a yoga class and had a fantastic instructor, who really clarified a lot and helped me do poses with less discomfort. I appreciate any place that can hire so many thoughtful, competent, helpful employees, especially in a gym where they often have a holier-than-thou attitude if you have any body fat. The class studio was small, but it's the city and they obviously know where to budget space efficiently. I never found the locker rooms to be dirty, but maybe that's because I used to swim at the YMCA.

If you're looking for a nice place with a good range of cardio and weight equipment, a decent class schedule, friendly employees, and great prices, you've found the right place. If you want a status symbol gym with a thousand extra services and features you probably won't use, pay the extra money for Crunch or Equinox.

  • Pros: Great deal, good classes and equipment range, professional employees and members
  • Cons: i didn't get to spend an extra $40 for shiny silver machines and a sauna. kidding.

Cheap and functional

by 05Zombie at Citysearch

I've been a member at 24-7 for years and I haven't used the shower once. It's because it looks pretty dirty. This isn't surprising as the rest of the gym is as well. It's essentially one of those muscle head gyms people either love or hate. Despite the grime, it's functional and well equipped. Everything is in relatively good shape as well. On top of that, it may be the cheapest gym in the city (when I recently resigned, I think I paid 399 for the year) and is open 24 hours.

The biggest drawback is the thumping dance music that they constantly play. The second biggest drawback is the members are mostly big men (I'm 185 lbs, but I'd say I'm one of the smaller guys around). This is a drawback because big guys start showing off for each other (being loud, dancing, puffing up) when there's a scarcity of women... I'm unimpressed, big fella.... I just want to train.

  • Pros: Cheap; functional; open 24-7
  • Cons: Loud stupid music; loud stupid members

good, no frills

by truthlover at Citysearch

reading some of the above reviews, those guys clearly belong at David Barton or the NYSC (New York S#x Club.) If you want action in the steamroom this is not the place for you. In fact there is no steam room. 24/7 is clean, but no frills. the showers are cheap home depot doors, but for $40 bucks a month what do you expect in manhattan? It is a bargain. The members are polite, and the staff is helpful.

worst gym ever

by ian10011 at Citysearch

You get even less than you pay for: smells like cat pisss; rusty 1960s equipment is usually broken; the building is falling apart; not a safe place to workout; 1/2 the members are nut jobs; there is a homeless guy who sleeps in the stretching area...

  • Pros: hours
  • Cons: everything else

cheap-- doesn't mean it's a good deal.

by julian_delphiki at Citysearch

It's great to see people lifting heavy, doing cleans, dead lifts, squats, etc. I loved lifting here.

The locker room and showering facility are hardly clean. It holds your clothes, and gets you wet which may or may not be important to you. It made no difference to me.

Unfortunately, I entered a contract with an untrustworthy company. I was told I could transfer it once I moved, but was misinformed. I found several people who were willing to take over my contract, and the 24-7 said this was fine at the cost of the initiation fee, but for some reason the gym changed their mind.

Then, the staff gave me the run around, and I was even told that the contract had been successfully cancelled, only to find this to be false after looking at my credit card statement. I continued to attempt a cancellation, with no success. I called the manager who suddenly got busy and promised to call back. After several phone calls, at different times of the day, I have still never heard from her.

I cannot recommend a company which treats its customers so poorly, unless you can only train at night or truly cannot afford to go anywhere else. Whether you choose this place or not, best of luck to you.

  • Pros: 24-7, perfect if you can't afford anything good
  • Cons: name it.

Best place to work out and not be noticed

by smarty_mcsmarster at Citysearch

This gym is not about posers, skinny bitches and schwarzennegger wannabees. It's a serious facility for the working boy or girl to condition and strengthen their body. It's got clean bathrooms, soap and shampoo in the showers. Huge fresh towels daily, and free classes!

There's never a wait for the equipment either, 'cos they've got so much of everything. All this for $30 a month. Suhweet!!!

  • Pros: Nice staff, clean facilities, cheap price
  • Cons: They don't have one in brooklyn

This is a great gym for people who are on a budget and want a decent workout.

There are ten treadmills, tons of machines and free weights so you never have to wait.

This is a great basic gym for weight lifting on two big floors 10,000 sq ft.

Free classes in aerobics, yoga boxing, definition and strength core training and self defense included in membership. Open 24 hours and a 14th street between fifth and sixth avenue location.
