User Reviews for Kimono House

4 Star Rating: Recommended

Definitely expensive, but high-quality & worth it if they are indeed from the 1930s! Tiny pomeranian was asleep when I came, but cheerily licked my fingers & no problem. Lots of other goodies besides Kimonos to ogle--- I wish there had been teapots too, but it's a (beautifully) small store. I'd go again.

Pros: service/colors

Cons: no teapots

I had been going to the kimono House for tea bowls and kimonos for two years now. As expected of Manhattan it is pricy but top quality imports are anyway. The shopkeeper and her assistant are darling, they will definately go the extra mile for their customers! They helped me choose the rights bowls and kimonos for my first tea ceremony; great people. As for the dog, it did bother me at first but it's docile. It barks and weezes from it's old age; it usually stays behind the counter.

Pros: Insightful and quality customer service.

Cons: Small and sometimes stuffy.

Well yes, it is tiny and very expensive but its the only store of its type nearby and this is Manhattan after all. I found the shop manager and her assistant to be very helpful and kind. They helped with my fussy toddler so I could look at their beautiful kimonos and were happy to pull kimono after kimono out for me without complaint. Yes, the small dog barks a lot but he's gentle and stops if you pet him. If you want quality Japanese clothing, you can find it here, to wear or display. They have some stunning vintage pieces as well as new stuff and lots of trinkets. If you want it cheap, you have to go further afield; convenience doesn't come cheap.

Pros: Beautiful kimonos, helpful & knowledgeable staff, easy location

Cons: Very expensive, barking dog, shop is small

I had high hopes for this little shop, hoping that it would be my outlet for much missed Japanese goods and clothing. However, the kimonos are way overpriced and the store is claustrophobic. You are greeted by a barking dog, and if you can move without knocking something over you will discover the owner who appears demure but is pushy. Buyer beware, she ordered the wrong item and still insisted I take the item!

Pros: location, knick knack variety

Cons: rip off, rude service
