Awesome bar!!

by DGBK

Awesome bar, highly recommended

Cozy and intimiate, only been there on weekday nights but never too crowded and able to get a table. Drink special is unreal and until 10!

Do not know about the previous posts but the wait staff was nothing if not courteous to me, again highly recommend for after work/date place

Great Customer Service - Geoff

by Meridien

When I think of a saturday night out, I could go to Tenjune, Marquee, or any wanna be pop culture hangout in the LES....but I prefer the Boxcar. Why? I've never had or seen any jerks at this place. It's like a secret bar you can take over with a bunch of friends and just chill. It's not a fashion show yet it's often filled with mid twenty somethings looking to chat with friends.

If you're freaking out over a Heineken 2 for 1 special, you should know that if you bought two Heine's at the Boxcar you're getting a deal anyway. I'm so sick of overrated bs bars that charge 15 dollars for a beer. It's incredible, this is the only city that gets more expensive to party during a "recession".

Geoff is the best bartender. He's super friendly and has his own unique style. If it weren't for Geoff, people wouldn't flock to this place to have a good time. Thank you Geoff for all you've done for us. You're a great person and we love you!

Rudest Bartender in the City!

by mickie227

My boyfriend and I went here last (Sunday 7/7/08) night to grab a couple beers for Happy Hour. From the moment we said Hello to the bartender he was rude. No pleasantries here- just "What do you want?!" And then once we mentioned that we wanted to do the 2 for 1 special he rolls his eyes with disgust. He slams down our Heinken's (which were not very cold) and flips us the two drink tickets. When we returned to the bar to redeem our beers he screams "Yeah, what do you want?!" At this point I am thinking to myself that we must part of hidden camera program or a practical joke. He claims us he is out of Heineken. Yeah, I bet! No problem, we'll take Amstel Lights. This guy was so rude! If a bar is going to advertise a happy hour special don't treat your partons like dirt when they order it. It makes sense why there were not many people taking advantage of the special here. If you do take your chances here- make sure you read the Happy Hour FAQ's posted on the bar. It says "Let's ALL get happy for Happy Hour" Maybe this guy should heed some of the Boxcar's advice!

  • Pros: 2 for 1 special
  • Cons: extremely rude bartender

TIny and lame

by citysamurai

I went to this bar to see a friend of mine read part of her book. After reading about this bar online, I was excited about the kick butt happy hour that is "every night". I get to the bar, it is so tiny i can't even move. The bartender looks like a perv and all the people there are subdued and kind of ugly. I order drinks and get charged full price. I ask if its happy hour, of course not, its a reading.

This place bites, don't ever go.

Great Outdoors

by fosterc

I have been here several times over the summer with a big posse of friends, and always had a great time. They have a pretty good happy hour on the weekdays, and we always liked to go outback and sit and smoke and chat and drink. It's very casual and more of a place you want to make your regualr hangout, rather than a trendy club pumpin' music place. But don't talk to loudly outside or you will be yelled at by the nieghbors upstairs.

  • Pros: Backyard, cheap drinks, chill vibe
  • Cons: sometimes the bartenders can be creeps

Best Happy Hour

by phonohohno

I was bummed out to find that the happy hour doesn't go until 10 on weekends, but on weekdays this is the place to go when you're not kidding yourself about having just one. Great little place, I'm surprised it isn't constantly packed. They have a nice outdoor area for smokers.

  • Pros: happy hour, outside space
  • Cons: small

Best Place Ever

by nkonick

Boxcar Lounge really is one of the best places in the city. It is small, but not in a bad way. The bartenders are always cute and fun to talk to, the ambience is completely laid back, and it's just good, clean, unpretentious fun to drink here.

Not to mention that the back yard is incredibly nice... It just doesn't get any better for an intimate chill-drinks-with friends kinda place. Perfect for a few pre-game warm-up drinks before heading to a club... just as easy to relax and close the place down.

Highly recommended!!!

  • Pros: Intimate, Friendly, Great back yard

A great time had by all

by asaf_klein

I recently hosted a birthday party at Boxcar. I highly recommend this spot for anyone that is looking for a place with great atmosphere and fantastic drink specials (it don't get better than happy hour until 10 PM). The staff is really friendly and will definitely take care of you. You can contact them via their website to reserve tables for your party, and you MUSt check out the heated garden in the back. I can safely say that I will be back real soon...

  • Pros: drink specials, service, heated garden
  • Cons: a little cramped

Bad service from bar owner

by bsmith75

I used to really enjoy this bar and its great happy hour and nice outdoor area but on a recent visit I encountered a horrible bartender with a major chip on his shoulder who I later found out is one of the owners. Snappy with his patrons and extremely rude I dont think I will be going back any time soon or recommending it to any of my friends. Stay away wednesday nights.

  • Pros: good happy hour
  • Cons: bad service, unfriendly atmosphere, rude bartender

A slew of creative cocktails await the East Village bar crawler.

by Contributor

The Scene
Boxcar's narrow space won't leave claustrophobes squirming. Think Amtrak, East Village-style: Corrugated iron on one wall recalls a shiny train-car interior, exposed brick on the other adds a little grit, and the large, gilt-edged mirrors scattered about reflect the candlelight. The glass-and-metal bar area at the front is sleek and chic, while the lounge area at the back has cushioned seating along one wall and soft couches, stools and tiny tables along the other. When the weather's warm, sit outside in the back; with a fountain and lovingly tended garden; it's paradise.

The Draw
The bar's beefy drink list runs the gamut--from the boxcar martini, a mix of vodka and plum wine, to more tangy affairs, such as the sweet and sour martini, made with Island Blue Pucker and pineapple juice. The six tap beers are served in 20-ounce pints, and bottled beer, wine and sangria are available.
