not worth it

by faqmaqfaq

pretty awesome bar at first, I'm a Sox fan so I love a Sox bar in the middle of Manhattan. But the bartenders were really rude when I tried to get my tab. I asked to get my tab, and someone at the bar was whistling (someone whistling at a crowded bar? Must've been me), so they assumed it was me and were really rude and refused to give me my tab for about 20 minutes. They insulted pretty much every one I was with at one point or another. Wow. Just came for a few beers. A-holes.

I would steer clear if I were you, never know when they're gonna turn on you.

great bar!

by reeeddsox

If your looking for a friendly sports bar..this is it...lots of TVs, true pints, and the best staff in all of NYC..Me and my girlfriend stopped in because it was a Sox bar ( Go Sox!)..Sat down for a beer, and soon enough we met Katie..a Yankee fan.......(in a Sox bar...I know)..but she was awesome, fun and probably the nicest bartender I have met in the past 5yrs in NY..alongside her was Jared (a true irishman..who could give it back good as he could take it) It was such a good spot we went from a pre dinner drink...to canceling our plans and calling our friends in for good old fashioned night of drinking

Number 1 Red Sox Bar In NY

by newlocal

Having recently moved to New York, I set about finding the perfect local bar to watch my beloved Red Sox and accidently stumbled on The Hairy Monk. From the minute I walked in I knew this was my home away from home, the staff were so friendly and accommodating from the daystaff to the lads at nightime( new guy Gerald rocks!!!). As if things couldn't better the food was great, the beer always flowing and the atmosphere always friendly. Come and experience the true meaning of "the neighborhood sports bar" and you will be coming back for more and more.

3rd Best Red Sox Bar in town!

by barsaregood

Picking up on my sarcasm? I'm laying it on pretty thick. Nice little hole in the whole "Irish" bar. However the quotes around "Irish" bar are intentional, as the pizza I had for lunch today is more irish than this joint. The only thing Irish about this place is the young brogued indie-rockesque bartender, who my girlfriend and I lovingly named "Doucheface". Apparently, nobody informed Doucheface that his job is to serve drinks, so patrons will in fact order drinks from him. His response after every order was either a grunt, or body language that screamed "I'm busy, leave me alone". The female bartender on the other hand was a delight, although she needs to stop calling everyone "baby" and "sweetheart" as she isn't good looking enough to do so. But she did buy me a drink and had big cleavegy cans, so I imagine scuzzy old dudes will respond to her bartending more than myself. As for a Sawx bahhh, in my book putting up a pennent or two should not qualify you as such. Pat O'Brian's is my number two place of choice to watch a game, and The Riv of course reigns supreme. But you know what? Those places are crowded, so I'll be back to Hairy Monk again for some great wings, to be condescended to by Chesty McGee, and to say hi to my ol' pal Doucheface. Oh, how I hate him so.

  • Pros: good wings
  • Cons: bar service is kinda bad

Best Local Pub

by hloriol

This place is excellent! The staff throughout the day, and at night, make the place what it is. An Excellent neighborhood bar. Highly recomended if you're a BoSox fan, ( I'm not ) but it's never an obnoxious crowd. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights usually consist of young, single, good looking professionals that live in the neighborhood. The beer selection is excellent, and you're always meeting friendly people in there. Sunday's are excellent for Football, Plenty of TVs for every game, and teams have their regular corners. Great Fun!

  • Pros: Friendly Wait Staff, Atmosphere ( Always Busy )
  • Cons: Seating Room

Always a great time

by cgrant79

I've been a loyal patron for over 4 years, still keep coming back even though I moved out of the hood. Great pub food, awesome music, and great atmosphere. What makes it are the bartenders and the manager, they're real fun and take care of you well. Not a better place in the city for an Irish bar.

don't ask for water on sunday's!

by m_funkhowzer

I came across this friendly looking bar on the east side and it looked like an ideal spot for watching football. We had just sat down, when my friend asked for a glass of water. When the waitress presented bottled water, he informed her that tap water would be fine; she snapped "we don't give out tap water on Sundays; it gets busy and this is a business....i get into fights about it all the time with the costumers..." When my friend went outside to get a huge bottle of water for all of us to enjoy, the waitress came by and snapped "Why would you do that!" She could not comprehend that it was courteous to provide costumers with water. The remainder of the meal was spent with her giving us dirty looks and ignoring our requests. So in closing do yourself a favor, go somewhere else

A convivial Irish pub with an atypical name.

by Contributor

In Short
The owners of this upbeat spot chose the strange moniker for novelty's sake, but the offerings are typical of an Irish pub. With walls of wood and exposed brick, this spacious locale provides ample seating and numerous TVs for the many sports fans in the crowd, while music lovers will appreciate the rock-heavy jukebox. The bar serves a full menu that includes Irish beef stew and homemade shepherds pie, but most people come for the company and beer.
