Bad treatment eclipses Good Meal
by Ariglio
II wonder if the incredibly rude waiter we had at Cafe Loup believed himself to be tolerating rubes on the left bank instead of slogging unearned attitude in the west village.
It wasn't the "I am just having a bad day" kind of nastiness, but the kind of nasty behaviour that seems to have tacit permission from the top.
Anyway, the food was good. The martini GREAT. The simple dessert we ordered was below average.
Unfortunately the rudeness of the waiter eclipsed an otherwise satisfactory dining experience.
Maybe this waiter was an isolated experience? The coat check was no prize either.
Cafe Loup would do well to read and recite the "wolf's credo" proudly displayed in the bathroom.
- Pros: nice location, interior, clean bathroom great martini
- Cons: self important service, mediocre dessert
Always charming and delicious

Cafe Loup is one of our favorite spots. We have been going here for at least 15 years and it is always charming, consistent and a lovely evening. A real gem.
- Pros: food, service
- Cons: always too full for dessert

Great Jazz At No Cover and Great Food
by gloriaclayborne
If you haven't been to Cafe Loup and listened to Junior Mance, you haven't lived. I just found out from the owner that Junior Mance and Hide Tanaka will be there all summer on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is very rare to enjoy great food, great jazz, and great service in the same location. You will not be disappointed.
The best part is that there is no cover which is rare with this international Jazz Musician.
- Pros: Jazz and food
- Cons: The bathrooms are small, yet clean. What's more important...size or cleaniness.
great food and great jazz under the same roof!

Never have i had such a wonderful Sunday evening eating at Loup and hearing Junior Mance play at the same time. We had perfectly cooked soft shell crabs,rib-eye steak with an intense bearnaise sauce and an air dried duck that was"old school" yummy. Plenty of local vegetables, great service and the owner-chef's constant presence at the door. If he's not there then she is (Ardes) . Sean kept us laughing and it is no wonder that they've been around longer than most. Great, great food with great music-this never happens in NY. Lloyd is one those rare unpretentious owners who really cares about each and every person as long as their money is green.
- Pros: no cover reasonable drink prices and wines-beautiful art collection the real deal
- Cons: small restrooms

I went here for brunch two Sundays in a row and the eggs benedict is great! The jazz is pretty great as well. An all around good place.

just lovely
by citychic06
I went here for dinner with friends and family, and absolutely loved it. We had a reservation, so we were seated promptly. The waiter, Frank, was so nice and friendly, and I would definitely ask for him next time I go. I had the steak and it was delicious. So tender and flavorful, one of the best steaks I've had in the city. The place was not stuffy or loud, and overall, I had a wonderful evening.
- Pros: great service, delicious food
- Cons: just a tad pricey, but worth it
update - less construction
by kilboj
we four went on 9-6-06 and the construction on their side of the street (subway ventilation improvements) is gone, yay, after many years. The place was packed, but, as always, we were seated promptly and mussels, vichysoise (an interesting dark color with a wonderful taste), frites and etc were all excellent. Try the napoleon of beteraves, a beet salad with four different kinds of beets stacked on layers of chevre. The fastest response time between a drink order and the drink I have ever seen - it is as if the drink has been waiting for you. Unheralded aspects are the architectural details embedded in the walls and the superb photographs hung there.
- Pros: ambience, attentive service, interesting food well explained
- Cons: none
