simple and yummie

by Blktucker

good food fast service. cheap eats. if you want white tablecloth service go elsewhere. the place is a machine, so you walk in they sit you down you order and eat and go boom. plus it is super cheap. too many snots crying it is not this or that. the food is good fill you up yummie super quick maybe too quick but whatever i'll be back. think of it as the white castles of chinese food, not grandmas thanksgiving dinner but nothing taste better at the right time... i love this place and would do a commercial for free....lol. ok maybe for a pork bun which is like 2 bucks. i'll take this place over most of the snobby places in the city and burp and laugh with extra money in my pocket and i might have leftovers for tomorrow. go to eat at sammy's not to be pampered and have your ego stroked you will write the next positive review nuff said

  • Pros: good super quick service cheap eats supreme large portions
  • Cons: not a hang out joint, or the place to propose marriage, eat and be out type place

Avoid Sammy's, new chef , that can't cook Food AWFUL

by Artee

I just had the worst experience from this restaurant, the general tso's shrimp I ordered (if I wasn't so hungry) was horrible, not fit for chum. First mistake, had it delivered, when I called to complain they're excuse was that there was a new chef, (probably general response to this complaint) wish I knew that before I threw away $50 bucks plus tip on a delivery that took close to an hour. Never had a bad experience when I ate in, and to top it off delivery came without any duck sauce. Running out of quality chinese restaurants. Strictly from a delivery point of view.

  • Pros: Eat in, Great
  • Cons: Whenever possibe, avoid delivery

Don't EVER order delivery online!

by grpacheco

I placed an order well over an hour and a half ago. Sure I got their auto reply - Your order is in Process. Then....nothing. Multiple calls with me letting the phone ring off the hook, and no answer. BEWARE

An unusually vibrant menu from a classic Chinese-restaurant in the Village.

by Contributor

The Scene
The succession of dining, takeout, and kitchen areas appears never-ending as it meanders for half a city block, finally terminating in an unused corner ala the Flatiron building. A quiet Chinese-food delivery shop on most weeknights, Sammy's explodes with young and eclectic West Villagers at the peak weekend sittings -- and the staff turns the food out pronto.

The Food
The Chinese menu is large, but remember: It's called a noodle shop for a reason. Order the noodle and soup dishes, as well as their dumplings and fried rice cousins. Cantonese roasted meats are also surefire, as are several of the small appetizer plates like sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves with red bean paste. Don't miss the vibrant sesame spinach or the abundant sautéed watercress with sliced garlic. The vegetable offerings are strong enough to make up for slightly less ambitious meat and seafood entrees.

My Favorite NYC Chinese Restaurant

by irenehope

Whenever I return to NYC I try to eat as much Chinese food as possible. There are two restaurants that are my favorites, Sammy's Noodle Shop in the West Village, and Joe's Shanghai in FLUSHING.

Now, a lot of people will say that Sammy's isn't authentic or gourmet. I say, I don't care!

There is no atmosphere. Sevice is brusque. But occasionally you make contact with a waiter who will take a minute to respond. The food comes lightning fast, fresh and hot.

Favorite appetizer; spinach with sesame sauce. Picture a half pound of fresh bright green spinach in a pool of delicous sweet sesame & peanut sauce. The best way to get your veggies that I know of.

Dumplings: You can watch the cooks make the dumplings in the window before you go in.

Choose any, I love the vegetable dumplings loaded with mushrooms.

Soups: Main dish noodle soups with choices in types of noodles, proteins and the addition of wontons. My husband's favorite is the Roast Duck, mine is the Cha Shu (BarBQue Pork).

Main dishes: We usually don't get past the noodles, but there is nothing like the General Tso's Shrimp! Hot & sweet! Cooked immediately before served, with the shrimp still hot & crisp, even with the sauce on them.

I am so hungry now & I live @2,500miles away.....

  • Pros: Delicious food.
  • Cons: Sometimes hard to find parking. Remember quarters for meters.

excellent roast meats, dumplings and noodles

by hk_phooey

Fabulous roast duck- order half a duck with fried noodle or noodle soup and a green (bok choi or watercress). Half a duck is sufficient for 2 people with noodles.

Dumplings well above average. Try the baked roast pork buns- sweet and delicious

  • Pros: above average noodles and Cantonese food

Don't EVER use their bakery next door! TOTALLY UNRELIABLE AND UNACCEPTABLE!!!

by heelsandshades

I placed an order in advance for delivery for a cake from their new bakery next door and it turned out to be a complete nightmare. The girl behind the counter BARELY speaks English and short version of the story the cake did not arrive at 1pm as promised. When I called to find out where the cake was at 1:45, no one had any kind of reason as to why it wasn't there in the first place, offered a fake apology as she brushed me off and no compensation for ruining the surprise party that was planned (it's hard to have a birthday surprise party without a cake!). The sad part is that the cake was great but they are completely unreliable and were just downright rude at one point. My finance stood by and couldn't believe that they didn't even offer up any kind of compensation for all the trouble they caused. Aside from the bakery, I think their noodles are overdone and seriously overrated.

Reliable

by blisterfoot99

There is more sophisticated Chinese food to be had in NYC, but Sammy's does a pretty good job for good value. The "Chilled Cold Noodles" are delicious, but VERY spicy, so beware. Wonton soups are ok, not great, but lots of the other noodle soups are very good. Roast pork is top notch, so is the chow fun. The place is a factory, but it's great to have in the neighborhood for takeout or quick stop-in gorging.

Oodles of Noodles!

by flipcityboy

I thought that I've been to most of the good Asian eats in the city when a friend of mine invited me for a West Village dinner. To my surprise, Sammy's is Chinatown eats without the crazy traffic and detritus of Canal Street. The best bets to order are the roasted pork, crispy chicken and duck. Water Cress with garlic is a real veggie delight. Plus the noodles and dishes are so huge that you have no choice but eat family style. When I came back with my posse, the wait staff gets upset that we order too much and need another table. But hey, good eats like this needs to go overboard at times!

  • Pros: Reasonably priced, Huge portions, Great meats
  • Cons: , Brusque Waitress

hurry up and enjoy

by abst16

I heard it was quick but the service had no time to talk. They would quicly answer questions and move on and impatiently ask for your order. The food came fast. If you love noodles, this is the place. The soup was loaded with big, homemade noodles, the entries were huge and fresh and flavorful. Took home plently for another meal. Reasonably priced. Not a cozy atmosphere and definitly felt rushed but the food was worth the comprimise.

  • Pros: big portions, reasonably priced, tasty fresh food
  • Cons: , rushed, tight seating
