Dean & Deluca: substandard smoked salmon
by Schling
I consider myself to be a very good judge of quality gourmet products. Got a shipment of smoked salmon for christmas which was substandard by any any accounts. Guests barely touched it. Texture was mushy, color was neon orange, flavor was flat. My usual haunts are Zabars, Barney Greengrass, Russ & daughters, etc, so I think I am a reliable judge.
Stay with Starbucks!

I went to the store, ordered and espresso, waited while at least 5 other customers who were behind me in the que received their drinks. When I inquired about my beverage, was treated to a scowl finally what appeared to be leftover espresso! Never going back and telling all my friends.
- Pros: Good location, clean
- Cons: Poor service, poor quality
The Tiffany's of gourmet groceries: elegant selection, exquisite displays and a "nothing bad could ever happen here" feel.

The Scene
Dean & DeLuca is the sort of place where people don't think twice about paying $3 for an avocado or $5 for a pint of Ben & Jerry's. The chain's Broadway location is spacious and immaculately clean, populated by an always interesting cast of fashionable Soho types. Purchases are rewarded with a black-and-white shopping bag, one that packs nearly the same punch as that little blue box.
The Goods
Drown your worldly sorrows in glamorous produce, imported teas and condiments, restaurant-tough cookware, breads and pastries from the best bakers in town and prepared foods by the pound. The lovingly displayed selection of cheeses is one of the best in Manhattan, and the coffee is good enough that your out-of-town relatives might start pestering you for regular deliveries.
Pure delight

If I lived in NY I'd want to shop here all the time! However, I think the prices would probably cause me to go bankrupt but I'd sure be in culinary heaven. Everything from the baked goods to the deli foods is mouth watering. The place gets a little too crowded so at times it was tough to navigate through the aisles. There's no place to sit down so if you want to eat some of your food you'll have to stand at the counter along with the numerous other friendly patrons.

If I could give a 11/10, I would.
Yes, it's expensive, but good stuff comes with a price. But I would say, with this kind of service, atmosphere, and quality, I don't mind paying an arm and a leg.
Simply spectacular. The cakes and cookies are so pretty that I almost feel bad eating it. Choices for meat and deli are wonderful. The best is, no matter how crazy you want to go, they will fulfill your indulgence: caviar, truffles, foie gras, exotic spices, fresh juices...you name it, they have it.
the only cons: the shoppers. This place is often crowded with snobbish, unfriendly shoppers -- especially when you are in front of them in the deli line.
OVERPRICED

Not too many places still serve small coffee in 8oz. cups. This place does, and they charge almost as much as Starbucks for 12oz cup. The taste...... definitely not worth the money.
- Pros: the deserts look good
- Cons: very expensive

I AM SO USE TO GETTING STRONG COFFEE WHEN I AM AWAY FROM HOME, BUT THIS COFFEE WAS PERFECT, DID NOT HAVE TO "MILK IT DOWN" TASTED VERY FRESH EACH DAY I GOT IT.
what a joke!

the prices at this place are ludicrous. I can get the same quality produce at numerous locales for much less!
Good coffee, no decor, just coffee.

No decor, tables cluttered, but good coffee. Good location, just off the square.
Simply perfect!

Beautifully displayed and prepared foods, wonderful housewares, and incredible produce! I could imagine shopping here for everything if I had the salary it would take to live in Manhattan...
Service is excellent. I had some things shipped home and a housewares item that hadn't been inspected before shipping was defective. It took a few calls to get someone who could authorize having UPS pick it up, but it all worked out and everyone was very nice.
