Jean-Claude was highly recommended to us, and we went this past Saturday night. We were initially a bit uncertain b/c the menu did not really describe the offerings, but we trusted the person who referred us, and boy were we HAPPY!!! The ambiance is rustic French bistro--sexy in an unpretentious way--and the servers, host were fantastic and accommodating. We started with a generous carafe of Sancerre wine--fantastic bargain at $21, and ordered a squid appetizer. This was unreal--generous portion of squid in a "lick your plate clean" sauce reminiscent of India with a hint of curry. This came with lightly dressed mesclun greens and we sopped up every last bit with the delicious crusty bread. By the way, the bread is served with decadent butter--the real stuff! Then we ordered the hanger steak and moules frites. Words cannot do these entrees justice--this was food that dreams are made of--it is Wednesday, and I am still licking my lips thinking of this meal. Just go, order what you want, and let the chef do the magic! Bring cash--but we spent under $100 including tip for the best meal we have had in a long time. Reminds me of Basso Est on Orchard (now Basso 56 uptown)--also fantastic with Italian food and the ever wonderful owner, Alex.
- Pros: Ambiance, service, food, location
- Cons: cash only
Special Birthday Dinner
by ravennarose at Citysearch
My husband just happened to spot Jean Claude while searching for a place to celebrate my birthday. It was during a major thunderstorm but we could not have been more pleased if we had planned on it. We had just returned from a two week trip to France so we kept our expectations low but we pleasantly surprised at the flavor and quality of the food.
This is a quaint restaurant with a friendly attentive staff (Solange from Marseilles- the manager? was great) and the menu prices are a bargain.
My husband had the sweetbreads and said they were the best he has ever had - he also had the duck breast - a huge, tender portion over bok choy. I had the lamb loin with couscous and it too was flavorful and tender. The tart tartin was a perfect way to end a very lovely meal.
We live in Jersey City and will visit Jean Claude again and again!
- Pros: Great staff - good food - NYC bargain
It's a no-brainer!

Romantic dinner, b-day party, catching up w/ friends, or parents in town... whatever the occasion may be, you can't go wrong with this place. As far as French restaurants in NYC go, this is the real deal. The food is simple, yet exquisite; the wine list may be small, but selective; and the exceptional apple tarte tatin will send you home very happy.
- Pros: food, wine, service, price
- Cons: can't think of any
nice find

7 of us came here saturday night when we were turned away from that stinky italian place around the corner. It was around 8pm and luckily we were seated right away. The food smelled so good i couldnt wait to eat. Everything came out looking so pretty. The seared scallop appetizer was perfect with the little salad on top. I had the special which was short ribs and this was so yummy, it was so tender and falling off the bone. I didnt even need my knife. Friends had the Duck breast which was OK but a little bland to me, the leg of lamb was good with a sauce that was a little sweet, Octopus appetizer was missing something (salt maybe?). Overall a Good experience. I left extremely full and satisfied. I'll proabably be back one day to try other stuff. Would be nice for a date. The place is a little dark and it had a good (moderately loud) noise level.
- Pros: food, smells, service
- Cons: small space, doesnt accpet credit card
great $17 hanger steak, excellent service, romantic and friendly atmosphere for group or couples

last weekend I made a reservation for 10 at Jean Claude for my birthday, I have been to the restaurant numerous times (at least 6 times I can remember in the last 2 years I've been in nyc) and each time I am stuffed and happy with the service and food they provide. You never have to wait long for the food, the hanger steak, hen, or lampchop is delicous!!! Bread and butter are always available, the creme brulee is heavenly, and both the host and hostess are magnifique. On top of the excellent food and service, I was able to get the exact seating as requested (on the left side benches), my friends brought in a huge cheesecake from Eileen's, and not only did the hostess cut the cake for us into 10 pieces, she added chocolate sauce on each plate and sugar powder, AT NO EXTRA PLATE CHARGE WHATSOEVER, everyone enjoyed the scallops and mesculin salad for appetizers, the main entrees, and we were able to happily enjoy our own cheesescake brought from elsewhere (which typically requires permission from the restaurant to store in their fridge, and on avg. a $2 per plate charge). The evening was delightful and lastly the wine - pignot noir for red was excellent!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! My friends and I would go there again and again.
- Pros: great food for the amount you pay, great service and delightful atmosphere, low key
- Cons: no cons. sometime it gets a bit hot during the summer, but it's open patio

Jean Claude is such a quaint spot with friendly wait staff, authentic French menu and a relaxed charming atmosphere. The scallops are my favorite and my friends and I love to stop in for a glass of wine on a Sat. afternoon. I've honestly never had a bad meal there. Highly recommended for a casual meal with friends in a fun neighborhood!
- Pros: portion size, music, accomodating service
- Cons: cash only
I would not really go again

My boyfriend and I were lured into going to Jean Claude because of its quaint and cosy outside look but we found the food and the atmosphere to be completely lacking... a je ne sais quoi. The prix fixe menu seemed like such a bargain but we could not really finish our meals, they were so incredibly bland!
Quaint and Relaxed

Strolled into this restaurant, randomly because it looked quaint and romantic, yet relaxed and also because my sweetie was ravenous ! The food is inexpenisve for a french restaurant in the city. The dishes were good, not exceptional but good and great for the price. The atmosphere is cute, quaint and romantic and great for a relaxed date. I wouldn't reccomend the cod however, it is very bland ( although our waiter recomended it) But the hanger steak is good.
- Pros: Inexpensive, Consistently good foo, Atmosphere
