The BEST sashimi I have EVER had!
by get_the_honey_junior at Citysearch
This was BY FAR...THE BEST sashimi that I have EVER eaten. For appetizers, my wife and I ordered the baked Sea Bass with a fresh tomato and red chili pepper sauce. (UNREAL!!!) We each ordered the Sashimi Deluxe platter. The pieces of fish were HUGE which usually occurs when quality is replaced by quantity. Nothing could be further from the truth at Tomoe. This sashimi was so jaw droppingly tender and fresh...that it could be described as something of a religious experience!!! This was definitely one of the top 10 food experiences I have EVER had.
Don't let the lines deter you....It is DEFINITELY well worth the wait!
- Pros: Fresh, large and oh so tender pieces of fish
- Cons: No reservations... long lines out the door.

Best Sushi!
by epicurian0003 at Citysearch
There's a reason why there is ALWAYS a line outside this place, sushi is always fresh and tasty! I usually get there early so the wait is not so long. I've never had a problem with service but again, I time my visits so it's right before the dinner rush.
- Pros: It can be pricey
- Cons: There is usually a line outside
Not impressed
by mr_meursault at Citysearch
People spoke of Tomoe as the Volkswagen of restaurants - priced for the masses but with the same German engineering as the luxury brands. Well, we stood forty minutes in line to find out and we were not impressed. The sushi pieces were huge - so big you could not eat them in one bite. The fish is fresh, but as people who love sushi know, fresh is by far not the only thing fish should be. At Tomoe, every piece was just like every other piece. You could not tell you were eating different fish. The prices were very high - no lower than at some of the top places in NY. Overall, I thought this was a waste of time and money. Tomoe is better than your corner sushi place, but it cannot stand up to the competition in this great city.
Freshest Fish in town!!!!
by dgirl25 at Citysearch
This is by far my favorite sushi place ever!!!! I am not a food expert by any means, but I have eaten in many different sushi restaurants, and all I have to say is that this restaurant has the freshest fish I have ever tried. If you eat here, you have to come here for the sushi or sashimi, the rolls have extra ingredient that take away from the amazing taste of the fish. The toro (tuna) melts in your mouth. You will probably have to wait before getting into the restaurant, but trust me, the wait is well worth it!
- Pros: Amazingly fresh Fish
- Cons: It's pricey, but worth the money.
Really Really Good

This sushi place is very authentic. The food is delicious but its not a romantic date spot. Check out all the menus around the walls
Rude wait staff

After we had been there only 55 minutes, the waitress asked us to leave because there was a long line outside. The sushi is good, but the service is so bad that it's not worth it.
Extra nice for regulars, not so much for everyone else

I absolutely love Tomoe. When I get the chance, I come here often because it is right around the corner from my school, NYU Stern. The maki seems to always be negi- style and the fish seems extra oily but not fishy. Particularly fresh. It is a nice change-up from my normal places Blue Ribbon and Yama. If they have the fresh soft-shell crab I recommend it, but be weary, the one in the roll is not the freshest one, its the frozen one, so get the appetizer version. It isn't too heavy on the batter and comes with the typical ponzu sauce. Get there early if you don't want to wait on the line. They do play favorites, mostly they do not seat parties that are not entirely there, but if they recognize you, expect to get special treatment.
Average sushi, high price, HORRIBLE customer service
by alee1345 at Citysearch
I've been a fan of Tomoe for over 10 years and I have to say that I will NOT go back there again. I have noticed a gradual decline in food quality, service and an increase in prices. There are plenty of sushi options in this city and I would rather spend my money elsewhere.
About two weeks ago, I visited Tomoe with a friend, we were seated quickly but then the experience started to go downhill. After we were seated, we were ignored by the wait staff, we had to flag down 2 different guys before we could order drinks, then the ordeal repated itself when we tried to order food. Once the food was served, we were ignored the entire time until we were ready for our check. We paid with cash and then waiting began, 10 min, 15 min, 20 min...we kept flagging down the waiter to bring out change but they just ignored us. Finally we went to the cash register and asked for our change. After another 5 min, they told us they had already given us our change. We of course protested, they owe us about $45 in change; after another 5 min, they finally brought over our change. We were so annoyed, we left a 5% tip (as a sign of our discontent ) and walked out.
Half way down the block, the waiter came out screaming at us because the tip was too low. We told him about the bad service and he just kept repeating: "you were at my table, i brought you your food". We again told him that he didn't do his job, we had to flag him down repeatedly to order drinks, food, and to get our check...and on top of it all, we did not appreciate feeling like we were being ripped off when we had to fight to get our $45 change back. He just kept yelling...ridiculous.
Interestly enough, the same waiter was yelling at another couple when we arrived at the restaurant; only in retrospect did I realize that the waiter was harrasing someone else for leaving too small of a tip. Here's a tip waiter...do a better job and the good tips will follow!
- Pros: nothing
- Cons: zero ambiance, rude waiters, long lines, dingy and old (need a new coat of paint and a good cleaning job)
Average sushi at best at high prices
by HowsYourStamos at Citysearch
I had high expectations for this place, seeing that its a local favorite with 4 1/2 stars. From the minute I walked in, I thought I was in the wrong place. This place is way too cramped. I was forced to sit next to somone who was maybe 6 inches away from me (not in my party) who ate the smelliest food I've ever smelled. I like to be able to eat my meal without hitting someone at the table next to me with my elbows.
The waiters were rude, the food was barely average and the prices were too high. On top of all that, I felt that the place could have been a little cleaner.
Examples... The "Avocado Salad" was some skimpy slices of tasteless avocado on top of raggedy lettuce. The dumplings were good, but they probably buy them from an outside vendor. The rolls were average. They were put together horribly and the fish really didnt have a super fresh taste. The sushi pieces were pretty big, but again lacked that unbelievable flavor.
Do yourself a favor and stay away. This is Manhattan, there are thousands of other places where you can spend $75 for two people for dinner and actually walk out saying that was delicious.
Oh yeah, the dirty plastic covering outside the front door is disgusting.
- Pros: The shumai dumplings
- Cons: Everything else about the restaurant.
