Marumi is a small restaurant and the place often gets packed. Hence, I do not recommend big groups. They have outdoor seating in the back, which is nice because they have heaters in the winter and it is breezy in the summer. I like to drop by here for some spicy tuna rolls. The rolls are a good size and the prices are reasonable. The bento box is always a good choice as well.
Not Special.

The sushi was good and nothing special. The decor and place settings were nice, but the food was less impressive. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't disgusting or bad, it just didn't make the impression and we're probably not gonna go back.
- Pros: staff
- Cons: Not special,average
good customer service

I took my best friend who visited me from abroad to this place. Food was so so. We ordered sashimi and sushi set. Raw fish were not that f*esh, gave me bl*nd taste. THE W*RST THING EVER WAS THE WAITRE*S. She impolitely asked for more t*ps which I thought I had already given her reasonable amount. Come on I have lived in this country for more than 20 years and I've known the culture. MAN*GER, PLEASE W*RN YOUR STA*F BEFORE YR REST' gets O*T OF BUSIN**S. I WON'T RECO*MEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE.

After about a year in New York, Marumi had remained a mystery to me for too long! We had a party of 5 on a Saturday night and waited almost an hour just to try this little place out (even though when we were seated, the back room was empty). After being seated, we were not presented menus or asked for any drink orders for a long while. Although we had a bad first impression, the food redeemed Marumi from a dismal experience. The fish was super fresh, udon noodles were excellently prepared, and many of their specialty appetizers were delicious. They had a good selection of sake available also. Overall, we had a good time here despite the spotty service and you can't beat the prices either!
- Pros: Fresh fish, tasty dishes, decent sake selection, and very affordable prices
- Cons: Service could use some improvement
Oishii Oasis

In the midst of cheap eats catering to NYU students, MARUMI is like a Zen oasis. A clean, calm, comfortable space serving authentic Japanese food prepared and served by authentic Japanese people. I say this with some surprise and much irony because in New York, Japanese eateries tend to be the creations of Chinese, Korean and Thai restaurateurs. Also a pleasant surprise is the quality of the food: Fresh and flavorful. I say surprise due to the very affordability of the menu. Food of this caliber could easily demand higher prices, but Marumi remains a place of good ol? fashioned standards based in the philosophy of ?good food at good prices.? It?s a simple and sound formula; yet, fast becoming endangered amongst the polarities of ever-increasing fast-food chains and the eating palaces of the new Time Warner Center. On a recent visit, Marumi?s Una-Don and Mini Chirashi were both delectable. And though the service can be subdued at times, think Zen? Not every server needs to yodel their name, rank and serial number like some misbegotten cheerleader to provide good service. Sometimes, one just wants their miso soup to be served quietly and their sushi to be presented unobtrusively.
- Pros: Value, Location, Ambience
- Cons: service can SEEM too subdued
The best place

This place is the best. Spicy Sushimi Salad is a creation from above. The salmon and eel cucumber rolls are to live for...
- Pros: Spicy Sushimi Salad
- Cons: Sometimes u gotta wait.
With its covered back garden and fish that's a cut above the rest, this sushi joint makes waves with the NYU crowd.

The Scene
Marumi would make a great poster child for the city's neighborhood sushi joints. Sake-fueled chatter peppers the narrow room, much of it originating from the L-shaped wood bar packed with NYU students and neighborhood sashimi seekers. The waitstaff is efficient and friendly, whether diners are seated at the bar, at the tightly-packed tables inside or at one of the few four-tops in the tiny, covered back garden.
The Food
Presentation and freshness are a cut above the restaurant's low-cost peers. An appetizer made of raw squid rings sprouts tiny trees of sliced carrots and crab stick, and little cubes of tender eggplant cooked in a sweet miso broth mimic a plate of petit fours. Rolls impress with their contrasting textures like crisp cucumbers and soft, briny roe, but often it's the simple sashimi that stands out most: melt-on-the tongue otoro and escolar mackerel, its edges lightly seared.
great food at the right price

I have been coming to Marumi for many year. It is consistantly very good food .
I have eaten at many japanese restaurants in NYC and for the price- you cant beat it.
Also, I travel to Japan often and I can say that they keep the taste similar to what you find
there. Many japanese restaurants make their sauce too sweet to satisfy Americans. It gets crowed so come early or expect to wait.
- Pros: great food & price
- Cons: gets crowded
