Food is ultra-cream laden, also bland
by hdo202
I grew up eating Indian food. The dishes offered at the Indian Taj's lunch buffet are very heavy on the cream, and the vegetarian offerings are extremely bland. The food here makes me feel ill and bloated. I can't speak for dinner, but the lunch buffet is not good. Really, for anyone to rate this restaurant as "great" is flat out ridiculous. The chana masala is okay, nothing more (again, rather bland). I get the feeling they are trying to make the food more palatable to Americans, but people don't want watered down Indian, they want Indian.
- Pros: buffet is less than $10
- Cons: food is too heavy, bland
great customer service

Best Chicken Vindaloo06/11/07 Posted by audreylauryn
My friend recommended this restaurant after I had arrived in the city for the summer. I was craving aloo gobi and roti, but found another dish that tickled my fancy; chicken vindaloo. To warn anyone out there that has not had this dish, its hot, very hot. However, it is hot in manner that is not pure pepper or temperature. The spices which season this dish are subtle but combine to make a powerful statement. The chili and pepper did not overwhelm the cinnamon and cumin. It was wonderful. I cooled my palate down with a nice mango lassi. I have been back twice and have found the food to be always consistent.
Pros: Food is worth the money, won't leave feeling empty
Cons: Service was good
- Pros: Thumbs up
Mediocre at best
by goliathslw
The first thing you notice when you enter the restaurant is the over powering smell of incense. It's dark and dingy, I guess some could classify it as romantic and cozy. We sat in one of the small private booths, which was nice, though it took forever to flag down the waiter when we needed something. The breads and samosas were what is expected at an Indian restaurant. We had the Baingan Bhartha and Paneer Pasanda. The eggplant was lacking in flavor and the paneer was stale. There is nothing worse than eating stale paneer at a restaurant, if I wanted that, I would've gotten frozen paneer and eaten at home. Overall- service was average, and food was below average. I will not be visiting again.
- Cons: overwhelming incense smell
Not bad

Stumbled upon this place one cold and rainy night when we had a craving for Indian food. Pleasant and helpful waiters, great table service. The samosas are winners. I went to bed dreaming about them. It wasn't the best Saag I ever had, maybe cuz I missed the heart-clogging cream, but I did manage to finish it without complaining, so maybe it wasn't too terrible. The Chana Masala was very good. Nonetheless, the breads and rice and other dishes we sampled were fantastic. I may just visit again for their extensive lunch specials.
- Cons: parking
A True Find!

I frequent a lot of Indian restaurants and I am so glad I found this restaurant from Citysearch. The lunch buffet was very fresh, perfect blend of spices and choices. The price is unbeatable as well. Service was prompt. A True Find!

20% service charge - for a buffet?!
by gpz200
I used to go hear for the lunch buffet. The food is OK, nothing special. Recently, however, they started adding on a 20% service charge, which is totally riduculous. It's a buffet, for chissakes. 20% for bringing water - no thanks. Put it out with the rest of the stuff and I'll serve myself. Not to mention the fact that the rude host does everything in his power to kick you out the second you finish eating. I've had my last lunch there.

Great First Date
by taydiggs
I went on a Tuesday night, so seating wasn't a problem at all. I enjoyed the atmosphere immensely. When we were seated we were led to this candlelit booth/nook that offered lots of privacy, however the seats were a touch uncomfortable. The waiter we had was courteous and conversational. Our food took about 10 minutes to arrive, but I attribute that to it being a Tuesday. I had the chicken curry and it was wonderful! The mango juice was tasty as well. At first they played traditional music, but turned on the radio to today's music, I would have much rather listened to the traditional music. All in all it was a great experience. The rating is a strong 8, but since I was dining with a 10 the restaurant was that much better ;)
- Pros: Atmosphere
- Cons: Music Selection
