There was FELA on Broadway but its FELASPIRATIONS still at 946 Fulton street Brooklyn where a new show on the impressions of this legend is going on this summer. You sure remember him when you see the impression of his characters on the canvas!

Great deals in Soho!

No matter what time of year it is, Chinatown is the place to get a great deal on all kinds of “stuff” from pots and pans to plants and Chinese specialty items. But hands down my fav store is Pearl River Mart Inc, partially because I don’t have to troll all around Chinatown looking for all the things I need – everything I could find there is housed in the three floors making up the Pearl River Mart.

The last time I was there I discovered the yummiest ginger candy, and picked up some jasmine tea and a Chinese lantern to spruce up my bedroom. Then I headed downstairs where I scooped up some sweet dishes on the cheap. I also scored some really cool chopsticks that take the work out of using chopsticks. Everything was pretty much priced to sell, and while the staff isn’t all that friendly, I didn’t expect them to be, after all it is the outer edges of Chinatown.

A little bit of everything

The minute you walk into this place you distinguish it from it's Great Smell. I can never identify what it is, but it smells Goood.. Its a Soft, pleasing, welcoming scent. Wow

I love that this place is never crowded. And it's large enough to get lost and feel like no one else is there. There is an entrance on Broadway and an entrance on Mercer Street. They have a large selection of fabrics. The 2nd floor is filled with tons of home goods... There is a Tea Balcony with small seating area. They carry all the normal things as a normal home goods, variety store.. Plus Hand Bags, Slippers, shoes, party supplies, asian children books, beautiful dishes, sushi sets, sake sets, iron cast and porcelain  tea kettles. They even sell some unique light fixtures that I will be going back for.

What sets this place apart is the things here are diferent, everything here is soo unique.

One thing they are lacking is providing customer service. There is no staff there to help. It seems like they have them working on projects but not a group or person in specific to help customers needs. I'm not saying they are not helpful, but you have to go hunt them down for help. Other than that it is a great location.

So much cool stuff you won't know what to do with yourself

This place reminds me of the enormous wholesale warehouses in China. I’m Chinese so stores like this bring me so much cheer tinged with nostalgia. I love Pearl River by default, but really, it’s the best repository of unique, off-the-wall items and knickknacks to buy as gifts or for yourself. You can find everything from gaudy, classy, tasteful, to downright artistic. If you can’t find anything with which to amuse yourself…well, then, you probably don’t have a sense of humor. (…Kind of kidding). Lots of traditional Asian things – tea sets, bamboo products, curtains, screens, vases. The coolest stuff, though, are the weird little toys sprinkled all over the place: wooden magic boxes, little hand-painted turtles that move, bowls of glass beads made to look like piglets…On top of all this the market is located in SoHo – all the benefits without the drawbacks. Browsing this place is like surfing the Internet; there always seems to be something else that demands your attention.

Everything you need to decorate an apartment

The Pearl River Mart is by far the greatest store in Chinatown. You can find everything from fabric, to beauty products, to tea sets. This place is a great shop if you need to decorate an apartment, get an interesting gift for someone, or just to look around. They have some really great finds in here, from mugs, lanterns, curtains, clothing, snacks, candy, ummm the list goes on. It’s pretty reasonable pricewise too and can basically fit anyones budget. It’s one of the most fun stores in NYC and awesome prices. (An NYC must-do as far as i'm concerned.

I think the secret weapon of this shop is its draperies and floormat department, which has hard-to-find bamboo, grass, and wood blinds for a range of prices, many of them dirt cheap, especially when at 50% off (but measure well, because sales are FINAL). Urban Outfitters would probably resell this stuff for a 500% markup if it could. Floormats are equally various in size, material, and construction, and are all rolled up and ready to carry right out of there. 



Otherwise,If you're in the market for some interesting gifts, or for a tea set, this is the place for you. Super cheap, and entertaining for hours, it's easy to lose yourself. I even found a blow up roasted turkey pool toy? I'm still confused.

You pay to be in Soho

It's fine I guess. I just expected everything to be as cheap as in China town, and it definitely wasn't. Plus, some things they sell you can get at Target or Ace Hardware for significantly less.

• Pros: cleaner than China Town
• Cons: not as cheap

The Asian equivalent of a dollar store.

The Scene
You can get lost for days in this Chinatown megastore's two floors, which contain everything from wifebeaters to megaphones to "Hell Money" (kind of like play money except it somehow involves going to Hell).

The Goods
Where else can you get paper lanterns, emerald green cheongsams, bamboo window shades, beaded flip-flops, baby-sized Bruce Lee outfits, jumbo jars of Ovaltine, lipstick cases, or a sake set with a cute picture of a bloated fish? Pearl River sells all this and more, at rock-bottom prices. Personal recommendations: Pick up some of the delicious hot roasted green peas (mmmm ... wasabi) and the Janlibo "energy drink," the best hangover cure known to man.

Pearl of the Orient

A Chinese Sears? Well, not quite. There's nowhere to get bald tires retread. But Chinatown's greatest department store does put a refreshingly Asian spin on an American staple. This multi-floored emporium (where "Made in Hong Kong" is a stamp of approval) scores on so many levels--as a tourist attraction, as a local shop and as a novelty warehouse. Out-of-towners can find origami paper and cool hats that fold up to the size of a pocketbook, locals can purchase an endless number of green teas or visit the herbalist for non-Western medical cures, desperate gift shoppers can choose between a miniature mobile of paper umbrellas or a cool caligraphy set. The pajama selection alone is reason enough for a visit. My one problem is the continual distraction of the funky sandals, the classic folding screens, the face rice powder, the nasty playing cards, etc. Need I go on. Go there instead.
