Wonderful Customer Service, Great Food
by crscott
I was in Chinatown for the Chinese New Year celebration and decided to check out this packed to the door restaurant. I was with 4 of my non-Asian friends. We had to wait for 45 minutes which was totally fine because we did not have reservations?...what did we expect on Chinese New Year? We had the Peking Duck. It was the most deliciously succulent duck we had ever had. The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. We also had the mixed steamed dumplings which were fresh and fabulous. We also had a bunch of their other entrees and they we all equally superb! Even though the restaurant was packed to the door the service was absolutely phenomenal! Everyone was helpful and as attentive as possible.
- Pros: food, service, drinks, value
- Cons: parking
For authentic Chinese food right in the heart of China Town
by catrina20
this restaurant tantalized my taste buds, which are strictly American, until I tasted the special house fried rice. This Caucasian, felt like she had grown up with a Chinese grandmother serving this dish with love on special occassions . It felt like home and I couldnt get enough of the perfectly seasoned and simply extradoinary masterpiece of chicken and shrimp with both red and white sauce blended into home style perfection.
This restaurant is singularly delicious minimalist Chinese cuisine soaring to exalted heights a restaurant which hides dazzling small plates which shatter every preconceived expectation.
Course after course of carefully prepared dishes. All very fresh and cooked with obvious care. There were at least 10 courses. The atmosphere was festive and the food enjoyed by all. At the end of the meal our table was satisfied and already planning for our next dinner out.. This is not your typical china town tourist trap. It is a magical little spot.
Best Chinese Food in Chinatown
by luvbug1900
Best chinese food I ever had in a long time, great service. It is a very nice cozy place. Cleansiness is my first priority when it comes to eating in a restaurant and that is what you will see here. If you are ever in Chinatown, I highly recommeded this restaurant.
- Pros: great food, good service, reasonable price
The dim sum place to be!
by yumyumdimsum
Looking for "good authentic dim sum"? This is the place to go for great traditional chinese dim sum in the Chinatown area, where you'll find yourself amidst the bustling morning "dim sum rush" of both locals and tourists, for an memorable experience of cuisine and surrounding. The food is always good - it is precise in taste, size, and portion, yet also innovatively new when possible. (The stewed beef tripe is unforgettable, and the dessert/sweets are always fun). We were greeted and seated immediately, and the wait staff was attentive and friendly - always ready to place another dim sum dish on our table at our request, making dim sum suggestions, and ready to take orders for food, drinks, or condiments. You must try this restaurant at least once if you are in New York.
- Pros: Food, Service
- Cons: Not romantic
Great Customer Service!!
by minga12
I don't know what the person below is talking about, but the waiters at Tai Hong Lau were very accommodating. For example, i'm on a low fat, low cholestrol diet and i asked if they could not use oil in my food. Not only did they accommodate for that, they also made a suggestions outside of the menu (try the chicken w/Celery and mushrooms stir fry....EXCELENT!). For the more daring people out there I also tried their one person shark fin soup and it was a rewarding experience. I'm definately a fan and will recomend this for anyone willing to try REAL CHINESE FOOD.
- Pros: The portions are moderate to large, which is good for sharing. Parking is very convienent, there are lots on elizabeth and mulberry st's
- Cons: the weekends are really crowded, less busy weeknights allow for a more intimate setting.
Rude miserable service and terrible food
by seomar
After an exciting trip to China Town, my friend and I made a terrible mistake when we unsuspectingly walked into Tai Hong Lau restaurant for a well deserved meal. Dim Sum was stale and the spring rolls were soggy. Fish, chicken and beef dishes were equally bad.
Chinese beer Shindau was served warm and complaining to management did not produce any results. My complaint was ignored. The bill was $75 and I could not pay with my Visa credit card. Contrary to restaurant policy listed in City Search on the internet, I was told that the restaurant only accepts American Express credit cards or cash. After having to pay in cash and with a bad taste in my mouth, I walked out of the restaurant, never to return again.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Terrible Service, Miserable Food
AMAZING!
by mmouzalas
While in Chinatown walking around on a Saturday afternoon, we chose this place at random and they had a sign in the window "Best Dim Sum". We went in, were seated promptly and immediately they started coming by with food. It was absolutely amazing. I would recommend this place to any and everyone who is looking for good dim sum. Try the steamed pork bun!
- Pros: Inexpensive, Good Service, Great Food
Tasty Dim Sum
by qnb
On one of our recent outings to Chinatown we stumbled across tai hong lau, since it was a Saturday we anticipated a long wait. It was a well deserved. The dim sum was fresh, delicious, and hot. Every dish we had was juicy and the best dim sum I had in a long long time. I recommend the shrimp dumpling pronounce har gow and pork dumpling su mai. The push carts were awesome and really helped to see all the different dishes they have. The service was friendly and efficient. The only thing is that dim sum ends at 3pm so I suggest getting there early.
- Pros: Inexpensive, delicious
- Cons: weekend lines
Rude restaurant, terrible dim sum
by llsanty
I am Chinese and was so excited when I found your restaurant with 3 of my friends. We stopped in for dim sum, which is one of my favorite meals! But unfortunately, they did not have much selection and the waitresses and waiters were rude and inattentive to us. After a long wait, they finally took our order, only to speak rudely about us in Chinese to the table behind us.
We nearly left, but waited in anticipation of some good dim sum only to find out that the food was as poor a quality as the service. My dim sum was dry and crumbled at the touch of my chopstick. Not worth the long wait, aggravating service and high cost.
Stay away, there are many other better options for dim sum in NY.
- Pros: Nione
- Cons: Terrible service, Poor Food, Long wait
Disappointing Dim Sum
by b00pi3flak3s
Tai Hong Lao is the epitome of jacked up customer service along with subpar food. Dim Sum was not impressive and neither was the dinner here. Whats worse, is the prices don't justify the experience here as its quite spendy!
- Pros: No Line
- Cons: Dim Sum, Service, Quality
