Me and my family were on vacation in new york and decided to stop by joes shanghai for the dumplings since that's what they're known for. We had 6 adults and a baby, they made us wait outside for 10 minutes to get a table, then when we got a table, the server was absolutely the worst and unpolite. He kept asking me what I wanted to eat and I told him we already placed the order. He was not happy with us only wanting to sample the dumplings. He wanted us to order dishes but we had already had dim sum at pings seafood. I will never go back there to this establishment due to classless people working there and no food is good enough to be treated like trash. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

I have been coming to Joes for years now. Since the 1997 issue of best of New York, in New York magazine to be exact. I guess it's safe to say I'm a regular.
I frequent the Flushing location but have been to them all. Pell street is not my favorite. I feel that this location is dirtier, and more hectic than Flushing; BUT and there's a big but. The food at either of the two locations is fantastic!
Any of teh steamed buns are great to start pork or crab, both fantastic, I would order both!
Scallion pancakes are greasy delights!
Wonton soup with chives and shrimp dumplings, add some of teh sauce from the steamed buns (adds a nice flavor).
next the minced pork noodle ( noodles wiht a spicy minced pork sauce) and/ or the shanghai fried flat noodle (the can make this with seafood too, although I am a fan of the pork version).
look out for a special off the menu, teh general taos (with white meat, make sure you specify that), dried sauted shreded beef (spicy beeff with shredded carrots, scallions, and celery all ), or the jumbo crispy prawns shell off (shelled prawns in a spicy meat sauce) are all favs.
Also must have is the shrimp fried rice, the put tons of huge shrimp in there, not those wimpy lil guys or chopped shrimp! Man,, i'm getting hungry.. at this time the only place i can go now is Wo Hop... dont get me started there for some real old school fast food style chinese 24 hours!!!

Came here a month ago for Chinese New Year with my sister's friends who were raving about the little pork dumplings aka shao long boa so I tagged along to see if they really were the best. It was relatively empty considering it was still early (5-6 pm) and the dinner rush didn't start yet. The waiter gave us about 5 mins to look over the extensive menu and kept rushing us to order by pacing back and fourth. It took a while for the food to come and when it did, they got one of my orders WRONG and instead of taking it back, they said "this is what you ordered". OK FINE I didn't make a big deal out of it....until they slapped the check on our table BEFORE we finished eating. Then the waiter came back 5 mins later and asked us if we were ready to pay. I didn't appreciate being rushed out of there before I finished my meal...it wasn't even busy and no one was waiting on a table so I don't know why the waiter rushed us out of there. I noticed that they let the caucasian tourists extend their stay and were just rude to asian customers. That being said, they're lucky I even left a tip...$4 t be exact (an unlucky number and gesture according to the Chinese) especially on Chinese New Year. NEVER going back

I went to Joe's Shanghai last week.I love their dumplings.The soup dumplings are the best. and the price not bad. I love the Restaurant.

Joe's Shanghai is by far my favorite restaurant in Chinatown. They specialize in dumplings, but all of their food is top of the line. The food is affordable, the service is quick, and the environment is extremely social and welcoming.

Went in summer 2007. We had the Shao Loong Bao (pork dumpling? not sure what is the name) and other dishes. The "Bao"s are the best in NYC and one of the better in North America. If not for the lineups and location (I don't live in that area), I would have returned already...
- Pros: food, price, authentic and good
- Cons: lineup, being rushed

one of my favorites, ive actually traveled to shanghai and had the authentic ones there and it didnt compare to the crab buns at Joes....just be prepared for a 10-15 minute wait if your are going for dinner.....the fact u sit at a table with complete strangers is kind of funny actually....everyone looks at what everyone else is eating....service not half bad for the number of people they bring in.

My boyfriend has been telling me about this place for YEARS, but I've finally had the chance to visit NYC and gave Joe's Shanghai a shot. I LOVE it! I can still taste it! The place is crowded but my group of friends (about 8) only had to wait about 10 minutes. The prices are really great..Great bargain for best food! I don't know what else to say...Just try it!!

Great Chinese food. Try the braised pork shoulder and the orange beef as well. I've gone here to order nothing else other than the steamed pork dumplings. The broth is what makes the dumplings so special! haven't gone in a while, but was a huge fan of its Flushing restaurant. now that they have one on 56th St. I'll be going more often!

Amazing works of cooking chemistry those little soup dumplings are. Steaming hot they oooze flavorful broth right into the well of your soup spoon. Be sure to let it cool before slurping it down, it is a hazard of dining here to scald your mouth on the first thing you taste--kind of ruins the rest of the dining experience. So, proceed with caution, but do proceed. They are worth the hot mess. Other favorites include spinach perfectly sauteed with lots of garlic and crispy beef; sliced into thin strips, battered, fried and tossed in a sticky sweet sauce. This restaurant is a rare mix of authentic food and tourists. They couldn't keep the secret, but it won't disappoint anyone looking for "real" Chinese food.
