Great atmosphere, best beer list in the area, totally cozy

by defdelf

I?m always trying to find reasons to hang out in this neighborhood and have to admit I?m usually disappointed. Now I?ve found a cool place! The location is perfect- off the beaten path, but only slightly. I went on a Saturday night and it was a little crowded- definitely had to compete for the bartender's attention. When I was noticed, however, the service was very friendly. I will go back.

Great place!

by schmitty06

hate to shoot down the previous reviewer, but the B&T crowd does go there-I being proof..

It's a great place to go on a date, dark, quality beer list, great wine, couches in the back to get cozy. I don't think this place will ever get too popular, due to its out of the way location.. on the very quiet and otherwise boring block of perry street.

Great hidden wine and beer bar

by mwitherspo001

This is one of my favorite place to go in the village. The only reason I hesitate to describe its merits is the possiblity that my review might encourage the B&T crowd to visit. The best part about this bar is getting away from the high octane lines and the bouncer pretentiousness of the Meatpacking clubs on the weekend. If you are looking to hang with friends or lovers in dim light and drink excellent wine and beer, this is your place. Try and Allagash, they actually have it. Good humor steals the show here as the place is relaxed enough for people to strike up conversations with their neighbors.

  • Pros: Romantic, but fun, strong beer list, no B&Ts
  • Cons: a bit small

Covert, dimly lit wine bar in the far West Village is a perfect alternative to the spring-break vibe of the Meatpacking District.

by Contributor

The rustic exposed brick surroundings in this tiny West Village wine bar boast a plethora of exotic wines and beers, all listed on blackboards over the bar. The friendly staff will gladly help choose a libation to whet your palate. The crowd is composed primarily of low-key urbanities that still enjoy a night out in the city, but don't want to be stuck mingling with the B&T crowd a few blocks north. Although the space is tight, it doesn't feel overcrowded once you carve out your niche for the evening.

Hits: It's casual, the bartender is easily accessible, and the drinks are reasonably priced. The vibe is calm, cool and collected.

Misses: As the night goes on, the Otheroom tends to see the overflow of club-hoppers, in need of winding down, especially on the weekends.

The dba of the west

by iditarod

Otheroom was a great find - the beer selection rivals that of dba, a new york city must, only you'll find yours in a bottle here (most of the time). The crowd is small and unpretentious and if you just like to hang out, this place could be another new york standard.

  • Pros: Great beer selection, Laid-back vibe

cool but not pretentious

I really like this place when I want a mellow place to go with a friend and have some good beer and wine. The bartenders are really laid back and knowledgeable and very willing to help.

  • Pros: good crowd, can take your dog

Great Hangout Bar

by klhrabosky

I found this place recently. I went on a weeknight for a first date and it was a great choice. There were enough laid back people in the place, but not crowded. My date & I could talk easily over the music (which was very good). Staff was friendly and attentive, drink prices were reasonable. I am definitely going back!
