Great Bargains!
by manwithneedleandthread
Since I discovered this gem out of the usual fabric district, I've never been happier! Weighing the pros and cons, I listed 'closed on Saturday' as the only possible, however, you make up for it because all or most of the stores in the fabric/garment district are 'closed on Sundays' allowing you THIS option for Sunday!
The staff has always been great to me from greeting me as soon as I walk into the establishment to the sweet ladies that chat with me while cutting the fabric to the choices of items! Each time I am there, I end up talking to another fellow shopper and sharing a laugh or two!
I highly recommend this to others! Make your way there!!!
Enjoy!!!
- Pros: EVERYTHING from staff to items!
- Cons: Closed on Saturdays, but I can deal with that... ;-)
My hidden jewel
by sleepysin
I've been visiting this store since I was a little girl. Even through my years at Fashion Institute of Technology and having access to all the popular fabric stores (ie Mood Fabric, B&J's, etc), I always go back to P&S. The selection of materials is vast. The staff is friendly and COMPETENT. Prices are good.
Whether you're looking for fabric, sewing notions, yarns, trims and all the little things in between, they can help. If they don't have something, they may look into ordering it for you or at least sending you in the right direction. It may not look as fancy as the midtown shops but they make up for that in quality.
My only qualm with them is that it's closed on Saturdays (Jewish-owned) and that can be quite a pain..
- Pros: Selection, staff & prices.
- Cons: Closed on Saturdays.
The Best Place for Yarn in Manhattan!
by boobaLooba
Forget all of those snooty, expensive yarn shops in the Village and on the Upper East and West sides. P&S Fabric is a gem. I buy all of my yarn there. Great selection and excellent prices. I crochet and they have a great selection of crochet hooks. They have a great selection of knitting needles as well for all of you knitters out there.
You can get inexpensive yarns to higher priced yarns there with great quality and lots of great colors. This is especially handy when you're making a large project such as a blanket, which of course, requires a lot of yarn. I love this store! And so will you.
- Pros: Store easy to find; near #1 train. Great yarn selection and prices
- Cons: Be sure to call before you visit to confirm store hours
JoAnn's Fun NYC Cousin
by alisonrebecca
P&S is still open but has moved across the street to 360 Broadway.
If you miss the convenience of one stop shopping like you get at Jo Ann Fabrics in the suburbs, this place is for you. They have fabric, yarn, ribbon/trim, buttons, thread and all those other little sewing things you can't live without. And I was pleasantly surprised to find it well organized, brightly lit and filled with fresh air unlike a lot of other fabric stores in the area.
Good for Cheaper Yarns & Knitting Supplies
by akkasha
The previous reviewer is incorrect. They are still open. I haven't been in a while, but I called them. They also have a website www.psyarns though it doesn't carry as much as the store.

great for knitters
by julyviolets
i love the selection of novelty and regular yarns. they sell relatively cheap yarn (acrylic). if you buy in bulk, this is the place to go. one of my favorite knitting shops because they have a lot of extra things to buy to complete the project - needles, books, odds and ends (buttons, zippers and fabrics).
- Pros: great selection, big variety of yarn
A hectic universe of sewing fabrics and supplies.

The Scene
On the south end of Broadway's Fabric Row near Canal Street, P & S is crammed full of cloth and thread in its various guises, with large rolls bundled together or heaped on tables according to a mysterious organizing principle. The profusion of colors and textures makes for a strangely sensual experience, despite the frenzied atmosphere and fluorescent lighting.
The Goods
Unlike other stores in the area that focus on decorating, P & S carries mostly clothing fabrics, as well as patterns and sewing machines. Since it's close to Chinatown, there are some beautiful Asian silk brocades in addition to luxurious velvets and laces. Elbow your way past the grannies choosing from the vast array of knitting yarns, or pick out some sequins, ribbons and rhinestones to adorn your creation.
