It makes perfect sense that John Waters, connoisseur of homegrown kitsch, would end up showing his photos at American Fine Arts. Gallery owner Colin de Land—a chain-smoking dealer who dresses like a used-car salesman from the 1950s— is, like Waters, dedicated to an ironic sense of the absurd. That doesn't stop him from being completely serious about contemporary art and representing some of the best young post-conceptualists working today. These include Tom Burr, whose recent photo-text project mapped the history of public toilets in New York, and Mark Dion, known for his mock-scientific "eco-installations."
