Oh, where to begin?
Meat! This is the place. Noplace else in the Tri-State area has what these butchers are selling. And as for the idiot who does not like the aroma of dry-aged beef, I recommend you stick to Food Emporium, where the meat generally smells like a supermarket. Ummm, appetizing, no?
And it has the exotic stuff, too. Want to serve veal sweetbreads to a dinner party? O's has it. Want to try searing a grade B foie gras? (Bloodier and meatier than the hyperfat Grade A) They've got that, too, for about half the price of a Grade A. And even a grade A here is half the price you'll pay at the Other Place on Prince Street.
And the no-nonsense attitude here reminds me of the waiters at Peter Luger. These guys know what they are doing and don't you forget it!!
- Pros: Easy to get to.
- Cons: You have to eat your veggies sometime.
Washing beef?
by emmita at Citysearch
I just got off the phone with a friend who highly recommended Ottomanelli's and I looked them up. I was surprised to read the nasty review by cafecritic. But then, why should I listen to someone who washes their meat!!!! I am from Europe, and that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever read!!! I'll go and give Ottomanelli a try very soon... Just because I trust my friend, I'll give the "recommended" 4-stars for now.
Best Butcher in New York

I have been going to Ottomanelli's for over 40 years. I find cafecritic's review biased and spiteful. He definitely has some sort of ax to grind and Ottomanelli's is the target. Believe me, they are knowledgeable and friendly butchers. They know their stuff and are more than willing to help any way they can. They haven't been in business all these years being nasty or selling inferior products!
Arthur Ave The Bronx Has The Best Meat Markets.
by cafecritic at Citysearch
I asked a few questions before purchasing some aged beef steaks at one time when I tryed this butcher and one person in particular behind the counter became quite nasty and did not want to answer any questions. As far as the beef goes I have had many dry aged prime steaks from locations across the nation, but the foul smell from this meat indicated something wrong with the aging process, I never returned again. I never found aged beef with a foul odor from any other qualified butcher anywhere. I rinsed the meat before preparing and that is advisable with any meat or fish before preparing. I HAVE MANY REVIEWS ON CITYSEARCH FROM LOCATIONS ALL OVER THE USA AND 99% ARE POSITIVE. I TELL MY EXPERIENCE JUST LIKE IT IS, I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST ANY ESTABLISHMENT I AM JUST DESCRIBING MY EXPERIENCE. I SPENT YEARS AROUND THE GOURMET FOOD INDUSTRY AND ONLY SEEK OUT THE BEST QUALITY...... THE BEST MEAT MARKETS ARE ON ARTHUR AVE IN THE BRONX. AND CHEF'S AND ANYONE THAT KNOWS FOOD WILL TELL YOU THE SAME PEOPLE COME FROM ALL OVER THE TRI-STAE AREA TO SHOP THERE THAT IS A KNOWN FACT.
- Cons: Nasty Attitude
This West Village stalwart is mecca for meat fiends.

The Scene
Got a hankering for hare? A craving for capon? An overwhelming obsession with ostrich? No sweat. Not only can the mightily able butchers at this decades-old West Village classic butterfly an ordinary lamb shank so beautifully it could bring a quiver to the lip of the most jaded carnivore, they also can satisfy your craving for pretty much any exotic game short of bald eagle. Just ask.
The Goods
The long refrigerated counter is straight out of a fervent meat eater's fever dream. There are gleaming acres of succulent raw slabs, chops, links, crowns, roasts and grinds just awaiting your preparation requests. No novices here--the gents behind the counter have been filleting, deboning and trussing for decades and are more than happy to share friendly tips on how best to treat each succulent cut once it gets to your kitchen.
The real deal
by aldouss at Citysearch
Want a butcher who really knows what he's talking about and is more than happy to offer advice? Want the best cuts of meat in the city, plus game in season and other exotic specialties? Want a real New York experience at a fair price? Yes? Then Ottomanelli's is your meat market. Forget those overpriced yuppie marts, where the kid behind the meat counter got moved over from produce that morning and the meat is selected for its photogenic qualities. Ottomanelli's is the real deal.
