horrible experience
by meghanzenz
the gravy had no taste at all, biscuits were dry and tasted like flour, vegetables were over cooked and soggy, waitress couldn't be bothered to check on us or bring a bill, chicken had about as much flavor as tofu, sausage was cooked so long it was dry, hard and blackened.
- Pros: decorations, looked cute
- Cons: food is horrible and flavorless, service is lacking
um, everything on the menu is awesome!

Waitstaff and management is so hip it hurts
by texasexes
Uber hipster waitstaff who obviously thinks they are undiscovered musical geniuses and oh so irreverent. Note to staff: do us all a favor and realize that your superiority complex and conformity to a certain manner of dress and musical taste makes you exactly like the jocks in high school who made fun of you.
Faboo Food and Fun

Love the food, love the people who own/run it. (Know 'em personally), and the atmosphere is kinda fun. The whole Southwest influence, takes me back to when I was living in TX. Missed it until I discovered this wonderful restaurant. If you're looking for some good old fashioned Southern/Southwestern cuisine, this is the place. The prices are quite reasonable as well.
Just wish those "Stroller Moms" would understand that this is a kid-friendly establishment yes. But, strollers can be cumbersome and some "Grownups" don't want to dodge 'em to get to their tables. Bring your kids, but please don't bring your strollers.
- Pros: Great Southern & Southswestern influence
- Cons: None that I can think of
Help them go out of business!
by ElanaD
When i was pregnant, i had cravings for their nachos, so we often ate there....The gentleman who manages or owns the place has no people manners, nor do the butchy hostesses...however for the sake of my cravings, i put up with that, just to get some decent Mexican food...Now that i have a stroller with a baby, and went back there a few times, I have never been so disguisted with their horrible attitude toward women, storllers or people in general. I was trying to get into the door, and the owner/manager (i already know his unpleasant face) was standing outside smoking...he couldnt even hold the door for me, and he clearly saw i was struggling to get in with my stroller. The hostess did not want to seat us, insisting we leave the stroller, but my baby is an infant and was sleeping, so a high chair would not do...It was 5 pm, they were pretty empty and I could not get in with a small stroller? The service is always awful, you will sit and wait for ever to get some service, and with an attitude like they are doing you a favor...Shame on them
Huh???

I call to make a reservation for brunch and tell the lovely gentleman that it will be six of us and a stroller.
According to this site, they are kid friendly. But apparently only if you carry your baby.
I was told no strollers.
How kid friendly is that?????
W.Village cheap restaurant that won't accommodate a stroller...gimme a break.
Update: we showed up and had no issues with bringing the stroller to our table. The host was very accomodating and friendly. If only he had been our waiter.
Unfortunately what we got was a pissed-off, can't be bothered waiter who needed to be reminded three times to bring us water.
Burger was less than satisfactory.
None of us will be back, unfortunately.
- Pros: Atmosphere and Value
- Cons: kid friendly but no strollers!!!!
Very good margaritas
by tdgatto
Recently tried Cowgirl on a "margarita crawl" with my girlfriend. Of the five places we tried (including Tortilla Flats, 5 Ninth, Gaslight and Spotted Pig), Cowgirl's was the best. Simple Cuervo margarita was done right; perfect balance of tequila, triple sec and lime. Great selection of tequilas by the way. Recommend trying the Don Julio 1942; it's delicious! Bartender was attentive and pleasant. Will definitely return to try the food, which is supposed to be solid.
- Pros: Very good margarita, pleasant bartender, great tequila selection
- Cons: none
Give me a break

The bad reviews of Cowgirl that appear here are obviously written by boorish out-of-town people who do not know who to behave at a groovy downtown restaurant in Manhattan. Sometimes -- usually -- if the staff is being rude to you at a restaurant it's because you and your friends are ANNOYING and/or drunk and are treating the place like it's your living room. Badly behaved people such as these have usually watched too many episodes of S*x and the City and they are mimicking the show's unrealistic behaviour codes and have an inflated view of what Manhattan is all about. Cowgirl isn't Bungalow 8 or Lotus -- it's a laid-back cowpoke joint for people who want some good, cheap food. I've been here countless time over the past 15 years and have never had a problem with the service, the food, or the ingredients in their super margaritas. Last year I had my birthday party there with 15 friends and the staff was so nice and overall the place has a festive, friendly vibe. Obnoxious out-of-towners and ersatz Carrie, Samanthas, and Mirandas best stay away.
So much fun, and such good food

We stumbled upon this restaurant by accident and had to wait a bit for a table since it was crowded, but it was worth it. The fun decorations and friendly servers are just the beginning. Almost anyone can find something they want on the menu, and they have all the favorite comfort foods, on a menu that's an interesting mixture of southwestern, mid-western and traditional American. I loved the cornbread that came automatically with my entree. Unfortunately, I was too full to try any of the delicious-looking desserts!
- Pros: Fun and jazzy decor, filling and delicious food, friendly people, good "Village" feeling
- Cons: pretty crowded, loud (but fun!)
Great catfish, Cheap Bourbon, Silly Fun
by mommakitty
This place ain't for your fine dining friends looking to impress business partners, but they do know how to fry up some good Southern food and even offer several healthy options, as well. The bourbon shot prices can hardly be beat in this ever more pricey n'hood. Staff was warm and friendly and my waiter even remembered my name on a second visit. I can't stop looking at all the fun things on the walls, behind the bar, hanging from the ceiling, etc. Made me want to buy a bouncing ball with a snake in it at the little gift shop and be a kid again.
- Pros: Good bourbon selection; fried food; friendly staff
- Cons: Can get loud
