Hope it reopens
by NYCBB
I truly miss this place. I went there when I first moved in the tri-state area and it became my "regular" spot after that. I really enjoyed the atmosphere especially during winter when they had the fireplace going.. A very cozy place. I liked the people that worked there. Hope it reopens one day.
- Pros: atmosphere, history and good for memories
- Cons: kinda smelled(old bar), but you learn to like it

I love(d) this place, just not on a Friday or Saturday night.

I really hope this amazing spot opens again. Though avoid it on an Friday or Saturday night. It's a mess with college kids and good luck trying to find a place to stand, let alone sit. And to get a drink you better grab 3 since you'll have to wait another hour in line.
But...I have spend a few afternoons with friends enjoying the atmosphere, food and beer. A classic place never to be forgotten (by me). And, I will never forget "finding" the "secret" door.
- Pros: Atmosphere, friendly staff and locals
- Cons: Other than it's closed... Friday & Saturday nights

The old Greenwich Village speakeasy with the original booths, fireplace and false entrance is closed until further notice.

Good beer
by bluntbeckz
I heard about this place from a friend. We went and it was very crowded... The raspberry beer was very good. We didn't get to eat... but I heard that the burgers are very good here.
- Pros: Cool Atmosphere
- Cons: Crowded!! Two bathrooms!
Poor customer service and very cold.

We visited here at 2pm on Monday and it wasn't a great experience. There was only us and another couple there!! It was really cold in the bar and I could see my breath in the air in front of me even though I was indoors!!! The barman was not conversational at all and made us feel like it was an inconvenience to him to serve us. The cider tasted like pear juice too. Despite all this, it was worth going just to see it as we were visiting the area. I would have felt it was a wasted journey if I had travelled all the way there just to visit Chumley's. The decor is good and it's an interesting place to see.
- Pros: Steeped in history
- Cons: Cold venue with a grumpy barman.
Best-Kept Secret

Seriously, it seems to be a trend that somehow it slips out to obnoxious tourists that there's a cool bar/restaurant that only people in the know know about. Then these tourist types flock there and stink up the place taking all the good tables and acting like jerks.
Anyway, I've always had a positive experience there, even though once we had to wait in the over-crowded bar over an hour as stupid frat guys spilled their beer all over us.
But my portabello burger on english muffin was always good, and the cider was good too. Although my last trip there I think they watered down the cider because it was clear and tasted more pear-ish than apple to me.
But I really loved the framed pictures of authors and bookcovers on the wall, and how the plac ehad the old-timey feeling to it.
- Pros: Good food, good atmosphere
- Cons: can take a long time to get table, annoying patrons
