Great Italian

by JKWestVillage

It's a hike for most, but well worth the trip for fresh pasta and inexpensive wine and they serve up one of the best chicken cutlets in the city. A true gem.

  • Pros: Great food, Great Lighting, Inexpensive
  • Cons: Cash Only

Yum!

by halli620

I went there on a second date. I love that they made rubber bands and clothespins on the menus elegant. The artichoke and asparagus specials for appetizers were lovely, and I ordered the spinich gnocci since I read good things about it on here. Yum! When it first came, it was such a big plate and the sauce was so rich I couldn't even see myself even finishing half of it, but the gnocci was in a way so light and fluffy that I nearly finished my plate. A real treat.

Outstanding homemade pasta! Highly recommended! *Cash only*

by musicb0xdancer

What a great find! I came on a recommendation of a passerby in the area, and was beyond pleasantly surprised. I lived in Italy for 4 months, and eating here was the first time that taste alone, literally, brought be right back to Firenze. Their homemade pasta is truly Italian, and the style of the restaurant itself with wall-sized windows that open to the street made the experience feel that much more Italian! Great food, great prices, well worth stopping in!

  • Pros: Truly italian food, atmosphere, Value
  • Cons: Payment types accepted: Cash only

Local stand-by for unpretentious, moderately priced Italian fare.

by Kathleen Squires

In Short
Simple charms--exposed brick, breakaway doors, lacey curtains, and ceiling fans--enhance this reliable neighborhood favorite, where specials are written in marker on butcher paper, water comes in recycled wine bottles and wine is served in tumblers. There's no pretension on the menu either, which ranges from homemade pastas like tagliatelle Bolognese to heartier entrees like a plate-sized chicken cutlet adorned with arugula, tomato and a squirt of fresh lemon.

Simple yet totally delicious...

by nerak1

I went to Malatesta this past weekend with a few friends and absolutely loved it! Such a cute/cozy place with doors wide open so you can feel the outdoor breeze even if you're not sitting outside. Spinach gnocci was amazing but so were other dishes my friends ordered. We had panacotta for dessert. It's flan-like but a thousand times better. The best part of it all: it's not overpriced like every other Italian restaruant in NY! A 3-course meal with wine for about $40 per person. Amazing! I'm going to recommed this place to everyone.

Cozy spot with good food

by ktobiassen

I've been here several times and the food is always good. The joint jumps at night, so the restaurant gets noisy and crowded and you will have to wait for a table. One of the best choices in the far west village, although there are lots of other trattorias of this caliber in the village.

My favorite restaurant in New York!

by apersoniknow

This is my favorite restaurant in New York. I have been coming to Malatesta Trattoria for years now, have been for every birthday, Valentines Day, every time family comes in town, and it has always been fabulous. Their menu is simple, but delicious and provides an intimat atmosphere with a helpful staff. I always order the lamb or gniocci, both are delicious, as is the spaghetti...they make all the noodles by hand, it's amazing!!!

  • Pros: Absolutely delicious food...
  • Cons: Can't think of any.

rudest service

by maudbonsignourbonsignour

Good food as usual and horrible service. We were having a great time with some friends, 3 bottles of wine, a lot of food, and they brought us the check in the middle of the meal without asking if we cared for dessert or coffee. I gave the check back to the manager telling him that we were not done. ten minutes later, we had just ordered more wine, dessert , coffee and the manager asked us to leave because he needed the table!!!!

we were still eating and drinking. Who do they thing they are? what's with the attitude? I have a food business

a few blocks away and this is beyond rude and unacceptable. never going back !!!!!!!!!

Best Italian joint in the city

by nyurebel1980

This place serves up simple and perfectly executed Italian food. The atmosphere reminds you of a local Italian trattoria, with the same service and settings. The wait staff is all friendly. The pasta is homemade and always fresh. The meat dishes are wonderfully done as well. They have some great Chianti to go with your meal. I would recommend the Bruschetta as an appetizer and the Tagliata Al Casale (Steak) and the Costoletta Di Agnello (Lamb Chop) for the meat courses. The best thing here is the Spaghetti Alla Chitarra, which is by far the best pasta around. Wow! The only downside to this place is the location, which is sketchy. The place is always full so make a reservation or be prepared to wait. With food like this, it is no surprise it is always full!

  • Pros: Food, Value, Service
  • Cons: Sketchy area of town, Cash only
