Southern Delight
by Atosha
I've dropped a lot of money here. The reason for that is the food feeds the soul. Soul Food. Its hard to find decent soul food in NYC, very hard. This is a place where the chicken, mac & cheese and the collard greens is straight from the southern pages of cooking. Not everything is great on the menu but a great effort is done to keep the 50 year tradition in tact. I recommend to try the traditional southern dishes offered before making a decision on the overall cuisine.
- Pros: Fresh, delicious food
- Cons: Needs work on overall service and atmosphere
Best Soul food in town
by DMilfort
I was recommended by a friend that the Pink Teacup has mouth watering food. Trust me it wasn't a lie, the potatoe salad is a must have. The peach cobbler is more like desert heaven. I was able to have a dinner for two with desert for under 35 dollars...............Highly recommended....
- Pros: Great food, Great Price
- Cons: Decor

Pretty cool soul food...

First I'd like to state that they always catered to white folks about the same as everyone else... in fact, they
seem to try to service them even more! Anyway it is about service + food NOT race so let me pontificate regarding the service first! The service is the same as when I went in the 80's, very relaxed ambiance unless it's packed (when it's crowded the service becomes fair at best). The food that I had was good (fried whiting, potato salad, okra), but then again that's my usual at that location. I especially suggest going for brunch on Saturday/Sundays or Friday evenings... leave your notion of privilege at home and come relaxed with open mind and empty stomach! Btw, the only soul food restaurant I really, really dislike is Sylvia's (yuck).
If you are White, this is not the Place to go unless you want to get harassed!

I have frequented The Pink Teacup for 40 years. I grew up in the Village. Today, I went there & for the first time, had a horrific experience w/ a waitress, Renee. She had attitude to me the entire time, did not greet me when I walked in. In contrast, she was pleasant to Black folks when they walked in. In contrast as well, she was lovely & quite lobie-dobie when she was on her cell phone & spoke to her to someone I presume was significant other who I knew from her loud voice was "outside." So obviously it was neither a bad day nor that time of the month! No silverware was put on my table. I asked another waiter. My salad & soup were forgotten. When I asked for it, I got a lot of attitude (i.e., sucking of teeth & rolling up of eyes) & she said that she thought I had said I didn't want it. No corn bread arrived, though I noticed on all the other patrons' (who happened to be Black) tables, there was cornbread . I checked the menu again to see if this was supposed to have been included w/ my meal & indeed it was. All the other tables had them. When I explained to the other waiter who had been so sweet & was this was the last time I dined there (I had tipped $10), he was apologetic. Renee started mouthing off that it had nothing to do w/ the color of my skin! If you are white, this is not the place to go unless you want to be treated w/ great animosity! The photos of The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. should be removed because this is certainly not what he stood for! Other friends have said that this place has gone downhill! If you use the restrooms, you can black dust curled all over the pipes as well! It's also disgusting & filthy! There are many places to go in Harlem & Spanish Harlem that serve better food, have fabulous ambiance that are half the price!
- Pros: If you're Black, you get treated better
- Cons: Attitude, too salty, expensive for what it is!
Worst "Soul Food" in town
by sylviai
I took my girlfriend to the Pink Teacup, thinking that it would be a nice, cozy spot to share some soulfood. Boy was I wrong. My girl really likes chitterlings. So we ordered some. But what they served was not properly cleaned -- a big no-no for chitterlings. She was able to camouflage the stench with some hot sauce for a few bites. But finally gave up in disgust. The black eye peas that they served us were stale, mushy and looked like they might have had maggots in them -- no joke!. The coffee tasted as though it had been sitting for hours, perhaps days. I had the bbq chicken which tasted like the sauce had come from a jar. Moreover, it looked like they took some fried chicken and poured some canned bbq sauce on it. The potato salad was an underprepared crime.
The potatoes in the salad were large chunks and the salad was underseasoned. On top of all of that, both of us became quite queasy in the hours after that meal. Oh yeah, one more thing. The biscuits, which should be the highlight of a good soul food meal tasted like they came from a Pillsbury roll!
Avoid this place if you are used to eating edible meals and/or you love real soul food. You have been warned.
- Pros: we didn't need hospitalization after the meal
- Cons: too numerous to list here -- see review
Horrible All Around
by MPRBC
I'll just get to the point. The food was terrible. I went in expecting some delicious soul food but what i was served sure tasted like canned preserved foods. Not to mention everything was over salted. Not sure if the "cook" was infact a professional or just a master at using a can opener. Avoid at all costs. And don't get swayed by all the celebrity photos they have so proudly decorating their walls. This place is a sham and a discrace to be labled "soul food"
Oh yea, and the entire staff, head chef included basically jerked around the dining room the entire night talking loudly and joking as if there were no customers.
Small portions, overly salty foods and horrible staff. I give this place 1 star at best.
- Pros: The canned corn was good.
Not awful... but ambience could use some help....

We did some research online to find this place (we wanted some southern style food/corn bread) and have to say we weren't overjoyed, but it wasn't BAD food.... My fiance got the "big 4" (Burger, fries, coffee and pie) and I got a turkey burger. Fries were good and the food was good - (not spectacular, but not as bad as some of the reviews here indicate). The apple pie dessert was definitely good - and the prices were very reasonable. We may go back someday....
- Pros: Cheap eats. Cute locale.
- Cons: Dingy interior...
Sooo Yuck-o!!!

I looked in my Zagat rated book for ideas to take a few girl friends who were visiting from Chicago. The Pink Tea Cup sounded perfect as 3 twenty-somethings females wanting a nice place to chat and have brunch in SoHo after visting the famous SATC hotspot, Manolia Market. It sounded girly and quaint enough but when we got there I was soo embarassed!!! The place was so laughable and just plain gross. The only good thing about it was the super cheap prices..other than that..the food was horrible, the coffee was horrible, and the people eating in there were kind of sketchy. So not a typical soho place. If you wanna try it, go solo, you'll be completely embarassed and dissapointed if you attempt to show your friends good eats in NYC by bringing them to this disaster zone!
- Pros: Cheap
- Cons: Sketchy, people, horrible food, worst coffee
