Avoid The Place - Host is rude and obnoxious
by valzoe
It is unfortunate that the management of this quaint, beautifully located restaurant allows themselves to be represented by the most obnoxious, arrogant host named David. Recently on Valentine's day, my partner and I went for dinner and pre-paid $178 for their prix-fixe. Everything was going well (or so we thought) until David suddenly appeared at our table, obviously angry and to verbally assault us for sitting past our time. We were stunned as the waitress apparently had discretely left our bill on our table which we did not notice. She never checked back with us and we were engrossed in conversation until David appeared screaming that we were given the bill and it was already two hours since we had been seated. We told David that we had not yet received the check and he pointed to a docorated piece of paper on the table and continued in an angry tone to reprimand us. At this point, we asked him not to disrespect us and he promptly asked us to get out. I clearly understand the turnaround time for restaurant seating and would have been more than happy to settle our bill and leave but we did not realise that our bill was on the table until David appeared like a raving lunatic. It would have been very different if he politely came over and prompted us to pay our bill and asked how everything was but that level of politeness and customer service is clearly way above his reach. I am shocked that the management puts themselves at a risk of being sued to keep this jerk employed. I have never experienced this with restaurants that are of a higher calibre and busier. The experience in the end is not worth it and you will regret it as we did.
cute place

We fell upon this place by accident and it was good! The brunch was simple and filling. The wait staff was very nice. What I love especially about this place that it's so cute - it's an open space and the bar was pretty cool. The mimosas were a bit on the expensive side but was worth it!
Just bak in NYC - Had fantastic meal
by Niceguy
Not been to The Place for a while as been out of NYC.
Can the food keep improving - yes! Had a fantastic mushroom appetizer and my guests had Goat Cheese ravioli, scallops and salmon tartar. Never had a bad meal here in 12 years coming. Interesting new wines on the list and amazing house cocktails. You just cant go wrong.
Service and atmosphere lovely as always.
Both terraces open to the beautiful W4th Street - I think one of the most beautiful blocks in the city.
Oh - and great value - very reasonable for the neighborhood. We'll be back.
- Pros: All organic menu, fresh and interesting.
- Cons: One restroom - but it is unique.
Exciting and joyful ambiance

I have been dining at the Place for several years and have never been disappointed. The staff is always professional and friendly while attending to my every need for a wonderful dining experience that is not rushed. Menu is organic and fresh which is always a culinary delight to the senses and topped off with a tasty wine list for all price points. Always walk away with a smile and a happy belly! Would eat here every evening if I could. Perfect for a date or a get together with friends.
- Pros: Most amazing scallops
- Cons: Soooo much fun!!!

Good food, but...
by lenadellacucina
Every time we come here, we have an incredibly good meal with lovely service from the wait staff. And EVERY SINGLE TIME we call to make a reservation, we get attitude from whomever is at the front of the house. Today, I tried to make a reservation for 8pm, a week ahead of time "I have 8:30." So I tried 7:30. What I got back was "Look. I have 7, and I have 8:30. Take it or leave it, or sit at the bar for half an hour, your choice." This is typical. I hope they can get it under control
- Pros: the food
- Cons: the front of the house
cozy Mediterranean shuns a scene in favor of satisfying fare
by Melanie Berliet
This (ahem) place’s name is rather generic, but whether the moniker is meant to be clever or just intentionally simple is unknown. Either way, the underground space is pleasantly intimate, with comfy touches like wooden beams, stone walls and three fireplaces that enhance the warmth of the candle-lit room. The menu includes an assortment of quality comfort food dishes like hanger steak with slow roasted potatoes, and short ribs with mashed potatoes and root vegetables. It’s a perfect setting for a relaxed group dinner or a romantic date--from the food to the ambience. And as an added bonus, the prices are moderate compared to most West Village eateries.
Wonderful place for dinner with friends
by missgnyc
I can only say nice things about The Place, what a fabulous place. Amazing staff, great food, good wine list, candlelit and cozy interiors. Rocking whatever the season. Cant wait to go back!
- Pros: Vegetarian moussaka, atmosphere, staff, food in general
- Cons: Vicious AC system!
What Poor Management!!!
by njesson
Tragic end to a lovely dinner. A bunch of us went out for a friend's birthday, and when the bill came the server was unable to tell us how he arrived at his $1200 total. When we consented, handing over cash and credit cards, the server returned to tell us we were still short. 1/3 of the cash went missing in the 10 ft trip to the register! When we approached the owner, he was nothing but rude, arrogant and abbrassive. The staff is treacherous so beware!
- Pros: It used to be a wonderful neighborhood treat
- Cons: But stealing from your guests is a no-no
