I LOVE the food here. The Cheese Chili Rellenos is amazing! And I love the guacomole, the marguaritas, the salads, the fish, and it's a treat when they have that Baked apple dessert special. The service, the ambience, it's always really friendly and neighborly.
- Pros: Yum!
- Cons: Crowded - go early (or late) and best with just 2 to be seated
Way to average for the amount of subway transfers

This "very" west village Mexican eatery, has the charm but the food doesn't back it up.
We started with the guacamole, which was pretty good--though it lacked the at table preparation that is in style right now. The margaritas were very fresh, but quite tart, and aren't very potent.
For the main course, we had chile relleno and the chicken mole burrito. The chicken didn't have any of the very unique flavor of mole. It did feature fresh grilled veggies in it, but just really didn't have a lot of flavor--a big disappointment for mole lovers. The chile relleno had very fresh ingredients, but it was nothing special.
Overall, Mexicana Mama was very forgettable--just another Mexican restaurant that doesn't seem to find much inspiration in classic dishes.
- Pros: Not crowded on a Wednesday Night
- Cons: Too many other good places nearby
SMALL and EXPENSIVE

The food here is pretty good overall and the service was great- but the space is SO cramped.. and the bathroom is scary.
yummy drinks-- but small portions that cost too much!
- Pros: Drinks
- Cons: Space
Best Mexican in NYC!!

I love mexican food and this place is the best! The sauces are original and the menu is so varied, that there is always a good choice. I'm a regular and have never had a bad meal. Just be prepared from a little bit of a wait, and close eating quarters. Not the best for a date, but great for dining with friends. I highly recommend it! Oh yeah, and the margs are the best...
- Pros: great food, great salsa, great margaritas
- Cons: some wait time, close seating
no me gusto

this food is not good-period. tacos were not flavorful at ALL. my "salad dressing" was paste- literally- thicker than hummus. the chicken was fatty in everything. i do like their salsa, but the rest of the food was so bad it didn't make up for it.
Was Great, Hope it still is...

Ever since Julieta left I just don't know...
All they have to do is follow her recipes to the dot and never change a thing and Mexicana Mama will continue to be the best Mexican this city will likely ever see.
No vale la pena

Definitely not worth the hype. While I liked my chicken mole burrito enough-- it was nothing to write home about. The dried out rice on the side was also quite unappealing.
- Pros: Guacamole
- Cons: Overpriced, cash only, sparse selection
Yummy!

Wow! The salsa was great! You can not get this stuff in a jar! We waited a half hour for a table, against our will, but definitely worth the wait.
Never a Bad Choice
by washingtonpl
This place is consistently delicious! While it is sometimes difficult to get a table because of the size, it is definitely worth the wait. Everything on the menu is awesome. If you like fish, try the halibut special. And if you can't get in, go to La Cocina down the street or Agave on 7th Avenue.
- Pros: consistently good, "real" mexican, atmosphere
