Location great, staff not so much.

I'd say over the last year or so, they've had what I was looking for about half of the time, which, given the challenge of stocking a small bookstore, is decent odds. But here's the catch: the employees seem to have zero interest in the job. The best was being told I should try the Virgin Mega Store for the fairly pop new release rock and roll photography book on a small press that I was looking for. Fair enough, might not be the kind of thing they'd stock as a small shop, but the dismissive hipster eye-roll was over the top for a shop that has S_x & The City hardcovers piled high on the New Release table. Didn't feel great going to Barnes and Noble on 6th, but at least they were cool to me and, yeah, had a copy of the book in stock.
They Rock!

This store was wonderfully helpful and when they didn't have the book they kindly redirected me to a bookstore that stocked the exact book I needed!
Professional, friendy and a wonderful experience!
Thanks you guys, I'll be in lots!
This charming neighborhood bookstore has expanded beyond memoirs and literary portraits.

A teensy shop on an especially quaint stretch of Bleecker Street, Biography lures literary types with well-chosen selections. As expected, biography is the specialty, but not to the exclusion of other categories. Indeed the offerings have a surprising breadth. In keeping with local interests, there's a good supply of children's books as well as sections devoted to women's issues and gay and lesbian studies. With these hardcover prices, you can feel good about supporting an independent bookseller without worrying about losing out on a better deal at the chains.
Hidden Treasure

Tucked away on a picturesque corner of Bleecker Street (right across from the Magnolia, so it's not exactly poorly-trafficked, though) is this great little bookstore. Though it's tiny, it always manages to have a great selection of new releases and old standards. it's rare that you can find a bookstore that's more likely than not to have what you want, and even rarer to find an independent one -- with 20% off all hardbacks. Beats B&N any day.
