As a child I had golden locks. Sometime in puberty the situation degenerated and the dreaded color known as "dishwater" vexed me. Desirous of mainaining a glamourous exterior (if only an outward representation of my inner beauty) I have sought the expertise of many NYC colorists, downtown & uptown alike. Sometimes suffering, a wiling victim, hemmoraging $ and scalp on fire in persuit of long blonde hair that is neither homogenously dull nor looking and feeling of a straw broom nor the highlights of a L.I soccer mom. Blessed be the Seagull salon. A salon in the true sense. I exit feeling enriched of coiffure and mind. I have for more than a year (I became a patron just as the present owners took over) been loyal to them exclusively. Shaun of Seagull is a painter and approaches my color as such. My hair is very fine and grows slowly so I am loathe to let anyone else touch it except him. He takes my one or two hundred mousy hairs and creates a fantastic optical illusion, giving me the shiny thick looking appearance that is , as per my wishes, both natural and visuially interesting. (He also does his co-worker Johanna's hair and she looks amazing). He also gives me the care free cut that my lifestyle requires, as I dont have endless hours to spend at the mirror. And never once has my scalp been hurt even when going very blonde on my tender scalp. The whole experience is a pleasure. At some hairdressers they will lead you to believe that the pain is part of the process. They are just amateurs, I say. And there's none of that immature high school style gossip that goes on at other "hip" establishments that makes me cringe in my chair thinking "if they say that about her when she walks out the door after smiling and cooing to her face, what must they say about me?" Its a pleasure to go to a talented, artistic colorist/hairdresser that is in the profession becuse they chose to, not because they couldnt finish college. Long Live Seagull. I trust NO ONE ELSE!

  • Pros: great atmosphere, interesting clients, attentive service
  • Cons: falling in love with your gay colorist

I have been going to Seagull for 3 years now. I love my hair, and I love Luke. When I first came to him, I had over processed long blah hair, and now I have a fierce look. He does the best color and cut on my short platinum blonde hair, I get complimented on it daily, I kid you not. People are always asking me who does my hair... well the answer is LUKE! He is an amazing hair stylist. He always makes me look my best, and he has an awesome personality to boot! The whole Seagull crew is fun friendly, and knowledgeable when it comes to hair. So if you are looking for a new salon, look no further!

  • Pros: Amazing HairCuts and Color!
  • Cons: What are the drawbacks?

I have seen Luke at seagull about 3 times now and I am hooked. I went to Luke on a referral from a friend and he has worked magic on my hair. I had been loyal to my hairdresser for almost 10 years but i was in a rut. Luke took my brassy, overprocessed locks and gave me a gorgeous foil and fresh cut! After being in his hands for a few appointments my hair is healthier, my cut is edgier, and i get compliments on my color all the time. He is also quick, a blast to hang out with, and a master at styling. thank you Luke!

Seagull is very friendly and welcoming with a fresh vibe. I get my hair cut and colored by Kate and what really sold me on this place is that she takes me through every step of what she's about to do BEFORE she does anything! She is constantly checking in to make sure you are on the same page. That's the only way to build trust and I COMPLETELY trust her judgement. She rejuvenated my extremely damaged hair and makes me feel gorgeous every time I walk out of the salon. This is the only place I will go.

Shaun is the best haircutter in New York City. I have silly hair which often looks terrible only days after I get a haircut. Shaun has changed all that, giving me a look that lasts for weeks. I wish I could go to him every week for one of his fabulous blowouts. Plus, Seagull is a relaxing salon that makes you feel super cool without being snobby or stuck up. I love seeing the whole staff, including the most fabulous Johanna, and I often stop in when I am in the neighborhood just to say hi. It's the best.

  • Pros: Makes me beautiful

Overpriced. Overcharged. Understyled. Not worth paying $125 +.

I did a long search to find a place where I can get a nice short haircut. For $125 I got the same haircut that I would get at a regular $26 Jean something David salon. Very disappointing experience.

  • Pros: Friendly staff.
  • Cons: Expensive, nothing special

I came to New York for the purpose of getting a whole new look. I found Seagull Haircutters in Citysearch and was not disappointed. They cut over 11" of my hair and sent it to locks of love. Then, they highlighted my hair and gave me the best cut I have ever had. I look like a brand new person! I was worried when I made my appointment that they would be snobby to me since I am from out of town. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Everyone that works there crowded around me and gave me their opinions. Then they took pictures of my before and after. Basically, I felt like part of the family. They couldn't have been nicer. I was there for 4 hours for my makeover and it flew by. All my friends want to go to Seagull when they visit to get their hair done. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Shaun, Johanna, Luke and Kim are the best!

This salon was recommended to me by a client of mine when my usual stylist moved out of the country. I was pleasantly surprised by the incredible service and wonderful atmosphere at Seagull. Shaun cut my hair and did a fabulous job. For someone who had never cut my hair before I was really happy with the results and I will definitely be going back for my next hair-cut and color.

Shaun at seagull has taken the guess-work out of my hair. I came in for my first visit with a grown out bob and terrible roots (maybe 6 months ago) and he gave me a cut that falls perfectly and helped me grow my hair longer. And I finally have a hair color with total gray coverage that is not too dark and is really natural and rich looking. in the past I was asking for the wrong thing or settling for something that wasn't quite right for my skin tone. My husband (not the type to notice) immediately said "something" looked different and better when he saw my new color. I get tons of compliments and my skin looks healthier and my eyes brighter. Also shaun is absolutely hilarious and I leave in a great mood. The salon is welcoming and great location. highly recommended

  • Pros: open on sundays! great color and cuts

I have never had such a ridiculously awesome haircut IN MY LIFE. Kate is like the tinkerbell of hair stylists, just pouring hot haircut magic all over you. Also astounding to me was how easy it was to communicate with her, even though I've always had trouble explaining to my stylist what I was looking for (totally my fault, I never know what to say and I'm totally intimidated and end up stammering something like, "uh, you know, whatever, just um"). I felt like she reached inside my head and knew exactly what I wanted. I feel so s*xy and hip, even when I roll out of bed in the morning (although I don't leave the house that way, obviously). Plus she was really fun to chat with, and showed me how to bust it out like Brigitte Bardot, it was awesome and fun. I left Seagull feeling great about myself and strolling through the west village like I owned it (even though I live in washington heights). I can't wait to go back for a maintenance trim (which is free, by the way) and visit Seagull again.

So if you're thinking about finally putting down the cash for a brilliant stylist, Kate at Seagull is for sure my pick! I can't imagine she could turn out anything less than awesome.

  • Pros: Kate is a rockstar. The neighborhood is pure new york city magic. I feel like a million bucks.
  • Cons: Price, but let me tell you, IT WAS WORTH IT.

After having a terrible haircut at my previous salon, I was a bit nervous about getting a cut. Even though it had only been a month since my last cut, I was in need of a makeover. I literally walked into Seagull Haircutters and the lovely receptionist Johanna said that I could get cut and highlights that day, in a few moments. I sat and waited while my guardian-angel-to-be Kim finished up. Kim greeted me with such wamth and kindness and really examined my hair before hand and talked to me about what I wanted before reaching for the scissors. She wanted to fix the damage and give me a few highlights, plus keep the length. We even came up with a game plan for the next time I would come in which gave me something to look forwards too while I grew out my locks. In 2.5 hours, I looked and felt like a new person. I had the most relaxing afternoon. Seagull Haircutters is the by far the best salon I've been to, not to mention the most fantastic cut. Kim truly is the saving grace of haircutting.

  • Pros: Ambiance, Friendliness, and talented stylists
  • Cons: That I can't afford to get my hair styled daily here
