Honest Locksmith
by ChloeOutlier
I bought a lateral file at auction 20 years ago. I had no key but the lock had a key number. Now, I have a stranger coming to pet sit at my house. I need to lock things up a bit (deter is probably more apt). This review came about because I called 3 smiths and this was the only honest+reasonably priced one.
I first called two locksmiths (in the East Village & Gramercy Park areas). They advertised they could make a lateral file key. I gave everyone the same information. The smith in the East Village area wanted $75 because there "was no card" and he would have to visit to replace the lock (and the related chaos of emptying drawers of the lateral). However, there is a "card" that gives smiths the info to make your key if you have the lateral key number (though sometimes there are the same numbers for many different keys, depending on the manufacturer). When I called Greenwich Locksmith, the employee said "no problem" and I brought them the number. He gave me two keys for the price of one key from the Gramercy area locksmith. Also, it turns out that there is only one series for my lock. The East Village locksmith was scamming me.
- Pros: Honest, Fast, Fair Prices
- Cons: None

Serving lower Manhattan's security needs from cracking combination locks to installing electronic card access systems. Key duplication while you wait.
