The real deal

by Targeteer

As the previous reviewer notes, this is a restaurant for those who have outgrown sweet and sour pork. The soup dumplings are excellent and the flavors of the appetizers and main dishes are very subtle. If you need a lot of sugar in and sauce on your food, this may not suit. But if you are developing a taste for Shanghai, as we are, thanks to Chinese relatives, this place is a convenient alternative to Chinatown and Queens, and the green walls and ample space make dining relaxed and pleasant.

  • Pros: Authentic food in midtown
  • Cons: No real downside

excellent shanghaiese

by hungryinharlem

My wife and I used to like this place and hadn't been back in a while so we decided to take my parents. I got worried by all the negative reviews on this site, but we had an excellent meal (with alcohol -- if they lost their liquor license, it's back). No offense, but the strong negative reviews of this place miss the point -- if you want General Tso's chicken and egg rolls, go to Empire Szechuan or some other brown-sauce emporium. Evergreen still makes terrific Shanghaiese food -- at least as good as the uptown Joe's Shanghai, if not as good as Flushing or Chinatown's best (and as others have noted, the ambience is nicer). Try an assortment of the small appetizer plates (especially the preserved duck with anisette), one of the casseroles, or the excellent sauteed pea tendrils with mushrooms.

FWIW, my wife knows people in China who know of Evergreen as a place to eat when in NY. It may not cater completely to American tastes, but it is solid Shanghaiese food in an elegant setting.

  • Pros: Rewards more adventurous eaters
  • Cons: Skip it if you want Americanized Chinese

avoid this place

by duducat

They've lost the liquor license so when I wanted a drink to balance out the mediocre food I couldn't even have one. Avoid it, period.

Turn back

by modelbabe

I went to a wedding here not long ago, it was one of the worst services and food. There was a cockaroach in my noodles and we found some metal stuff in which the waiter didn't believe at first. Be aware that they are very nice at first, providing good assurance and customer services, but it will eventually turn into 180. My gf told me that the pricing on contract changed couple of times and in addition, gave gratituity twice. If you want authentic Chinese/Shanghai cuisine, go down to Chinatown or Queens and Bklyn.

bad sushi

by nycwalk

Usually I don't order sushi in Chinese restaurant but there are some Chinese restaurant that offer good Japanese food as well. I tried it here but was very disappointed. You can do much better with any deli that offer pre-packed sushi. The Chinese portion of the selection is not impressive either. I won't come back. I've been in NYC long enough to know what to skip.

So so, nothing special

by hungrybear

The only time I remember the food tasty was when I was really really hungry and had a very pretty girl beside me so that I could forget about the food. One other time, I ordered a delivery and the fish came too salty and terribly packed. The food is okay for visitors from other states that generally don't have good Chinese food (friends visiting from the south sad it's fine), but for us in New York we know better. I mean it's not that bad but really nothing worth recommending. Service was okay since a friend that went with us knows the staff. I am not sure about the average customer. If you want to go for convenience, by all means. Otherwise, you have plenty of better choices.

soooo good!!!

by samash09

I just got back from Evergreen Shanghai and it was amazing. The service is great. We were seated promptly and comfortably at a round table and were immediately brought water menus and crackers. We asked the wiater what they recommended for sushi and he brought us some roll that was to die for! The chinese dishes were superb too. Although it is a bit on the pricey side it is definitely worth it! they also have a private room upstairs for rent which is a great asset! I would check it out!

responsive service

by chaett

They called me immediately after I placed my take-out order -- one of the dishes I ordered was out. They recommended another dish (not on the menu) but similar to the one I ordered in the first place. The person called me was friendly. The food was wonderful!

Tasty noodle soups

by tigrlily51

I would recommend ordering from "homestyle" portion of the menu, if you want some non-greasy traditional-style food. All of the noodle soups I've had from here have been great.

SUPER GROSS!!!!!!!!!!

by strangercat

gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross... seriously gross. I ordered the Jumbo Shrimp & Broccoli for delivery. The entree was a brown, thick, pasty mess of flavorless sludge. I took 2 bites and had to throw it out. The broccoli was covered with thick brown goo - seriously GROSS!!!

Go somewhere (anywhere) else!!!
