I have stayed at this hotel for the past 5 years. Both visits in 2007 & 08 have been less than favorable. Broken bathroom sinks, broken showers -- makes you question WHO is cleaning the rooms before your visit. Front desk were slow to respond, and the Manager only offered a Free Breakfast Voucher. Can you imagine using a washcloth to clean yourself and then heading to meetings all day long in Manhattan. Tried on numerous occasions to resolve my stay, but ultimately, the General Manager was beyond CLUELESS. The manager had the nerve to quesion me "was the shower clean"? How could it be if the shower was not functioning. Left a very bad impression, and my business is now going elsewhere. Appreciate the location and size of the rooms, but starting to get warn down & Cusomer Service is non-existent : ((
Pros: Convenient Location
Cons: Poor Mgmt & Upkeep

We stayed at Jr Suite for 6nights, and we were unspeakably weary from those troubles we had everyday. The refrigerator in the room didn't work, so I asked the front desk to take care of this problem and went out. That night I came back and find there's no frige anymore. I told the front desk frige was necessary, but they could do nothing about it and we should stay there without frige for the whole night&day. Next day, as we came back to the room, then we couldn't find the remote control for TV. I asked the front desk to bring it but he said there was nothing to do at that time and he would ask room cleaners next day. So we couldn't watch TV all night & the next morning. I asked the front desk for discount or switching the room, but they said they couldn't do either. I really never suggest this hotel to anyone!
Cons: No wireless LAN

We were here this past March and had a wonderful experience. Room was spacious, location is central, decor outstanding and the value was unbeatable. Staff will accomadate any needs it can. We found them to be quite cordial. We are returning in Dec. Look no further it's a gem.
Pros: value, location

Unfortunately a pleasant one night stay was marred by a reocurring unresolved problem. Although my stay was paid upfront, the Avalon has now charged me for 2 additional nights that I neither reserved nor stayed at the hotel. Too bad, the stay was pleasant, but not worth paying for 3 nights when I stayed for one. Now, I won't be back. Not worth the additional hassle.
Pros: Nice room, Fair location
Cons: Poor follow through

We were able to get the Jr. Suite for $179, and it was well worth every penny. The Jr. Suite had two comfy queen-sized beds, a separate sitting room, and a gigantic bathroom. While the hotel is kind of hidden, it's in a great location -- right around the corner from the Empire State Bldg. The staff was always unfailingly polite, and the hotel itself is lovely. This hotel is on the top of my list for places to stay next time I'm in NYC!

Really liked the rooms, but the staff is not guest- friendly. In fact, they could be downright unpleasant, from the desk clerks to the restaurant staff. Others we met in the elevator said the same thing. They should really get their act together, so that the charm of the staff matches that of the rooms.

I travel to NYC at least once a month. It's one of my many homes away from home. I've had the pleasure (or displeasure) of staying in 50+ hotels in NYC. The Avalon is my favorite "budget" hotel. Rooms are well-sized. (Even the smallest "junior suites" are large for NYC standards.) Doorways are set back, so you don't hear noise from the hallway. Suite layout makes it easy to bring in last-minute guests. Plus, it's on the edge of Koreatown, where you can eat great food until 4am.

Having stayed at the Avalon a number of times now, hosting family or friends in from out of town, I can highly recommend this excellent hotel. As the other reviewers have said, the huge marble bathrooms are the best, the beds are comfy and the staff is very attentive. When staying in the city why stay at the big name guys with far less charm when for the same price you can get the service and the quality of The Avalon? Dollar for dollar, the Avalon in one of the best kept secrets in a city with a lot of secrets. Here's one more!
Pros: Marble Bathrooms, Location
Cons: Parking
